Can someone enlighten me about what, exactly, is so special about Comstar's mechs/lostech?

My Battletech experience is fairly limited - most of it has been the PC Mechwarrior games, and that was mostly MW3. I'm given to understand so far that the mech lab customization in the PC games is NOT how it works on tabletop - in fact, customization is more or less limited to special cases and omnimechs, who are themselves limited in arcane ways.

Near as I can tell, Comstar's Star League-era mechs are just Inner Sphere mechs like the rest. IS technology is still worse than Clan stuff across the board. Is it just that the Comstar designs are more optimized or something?

I'm looking over at the latest report and something is bugging me. Originally, I was questioning why on earth the rotors are not destroyed, since they took 7 damage and only have a total of 2 armor and 3 structure.

I went and looked it up and apparently rotors only take 1/10 weapon damage from any hit (rounded up). So, there's that for anyone who was wondering like me.

I originally was going to try and figure out the justification (obviously fast-moving rotors are not going to be affected by a laser to the same extent as a stationary object, and autocannons fire multiple shots, not a single shell), but I realized that this is a game about completely impractical walking tanks and that would be excessively nitpicky.

Too bad you didn't hit anything else that would have actually taken damage!

Wait a minute... if you wanted to pilot a quad mech, how would the neurohelmet balance thingy work? Wouldn't you want to hook up a horse to the neurohelmet?

If I have my druthers on this, the neurohelmet is used to sync the mech's gyroscopic balance system to the pilot's own (inner-ear based) balance system. The actual movement controls are still physical controls.

You're probably thinking of G Gundam, where there's a mech riding a horsemech piloted by an actual horse.

Edit: Beaten on the G Gundam reference.

I was in the beta, and it was great fun. It sort of took a dive at the end though, when a lot of groups would lure people into games with a weight advantage. I don't remember exactly how, but I remember some glitchy way to drop out some mechs at the last moment when the opponents were already committed, and since you got some house points by just signing up for a battle even if no-one turned up you could cheese around a lot.

It was very difficult to actually capture planets if there were people fighting back - even if your house was winning a majority of the combats, getting those last few percents was a bitch because the disadvantaged side got more territory out of victories.

I'm sure if Kesmai hadn't gotten the axe more of the bugs from the beta would have been fixed, but it was announced that EA was shutting down the service so there wasn't a lot of reason to give a gently caress.

You DISLIKED the free-aim? :psyduck:

I thought it was great because it was less stupid than having to turn you torso everytime you needed to hit a enemy that is not standing directly in your crosshairs, instead you used your eyes to aim like they do with the gatling gun on some attack helicopters.

You had to move the torso sometimes to line up all weapons for a Alpha Strike but otherwise you didn't really have to do it often, since running around enemies is better than standing around and taking a UAC10 in the face.

To be fair, the free-aim made the game absolutely trivial. No strategy was required other than "Stack heatseaks and Clan ER Medium lasers" (Or Clan Medium Pulse Lasers, to taste) and throw armor and the biggest engine on you can. No mech is threatening when you can run by and alpha strike a leg off in two shots. Repeat for every mech.

As a simulation-style game, though, MW3 beats MW4 out handily. It's the only game I've ever controlled with mouse and joystick.

I've got orders from everyone except Radintorov (who I know is coming) and Olesh (who I have no idea about). I've asked AJ_Impy to send in some back-up orders for the Flashman just in case. If Olesh misses the deadline, the `Mech is getting passed to AJ.

Hey, sorry about that. Midterms just hit for the summer semester and this is the first time I've been able to check the thread in days. Would it be possible to give the flag to AJ_impy and push me back down the list a ways? I'll be tied up for the next week or so.

Hey, PTN? Could I get some confirmation on my mech's loadout real quick? The reason I'm asking is because I'm trying to figure out things like my range brackets and what my ideal distance is to target.

In the Battalion Status section, you've got me (Y1) listed as a Stalker -3H (which is what is listed in our Google Doc). In the player mech status, though, it's listed as a Stalker -3F, which has different armaments and heatsinks. I'm assuming that the mech status listing is the correct one, based on specificity, but I'd appreciate it if you could verify that for me because I'm assuming that they probably have different armaments (our Google Doc lists something different).

Hey, I'm seeing a discrepancy between last turn and this one.

Last turn we had this:

quote:

- Fires MRM-10 at J3 Cyclops IIC (1 base + 2 range + 2 movement + 1 enemy movement - 1 iLK = 5): rolled 8, 12 missiles hit Left Arm (7/22 armor remains), Left Leg (2/22 armor remains), Right Torso (15/30 armor remains)!

And this turn we have this:

quote:

- Fires SRM-6 at J3 Cyclops IIC (1 base + 0 range + 2 movement + 1 enemy movement - 1 iLK = 3): rolled 12, 3 missiles hit Left Leg (17/29 armor remains), Right Arm (2/22 armor remains), Left Leg (15/29 armor remains)!

I understand this won't actually affect what happens to me, but I'm pretty sure the Cyclops has to roll a bunch of critical chances on that leg. Also, I had a kick in my orders - does this not happen because I was taken out during shooting?

If you TIMG them, though, they'll almost certainly take up less space, and anyone interested can expand them one at a time, like so:

Y1 Stalker:

While it's a depressing example to use in this circumstance, it gets my vote because it is far more readable. Plus you'll save on tag space.

Freehold and the related books by Michael Z Williamson are my sci-fi guilty pleasure of late. Almost reminds me of the Gray Death Legion books in the vein of the "we're outnumbered by an arguably technologically superior force, but we're 'smarter' (and have serious plot armor)." Way more smut though.

Mad Mike's a cool guy. Freehold is a little preachy, and the Weapon is really the worst(best) type of amoral special forces porn, but I can heartily recommend his Ripple Creek books. Freehold is also available for free by the publisher (Baen Books), so no :10bux: investment to decide whether or not his writing style interests you.

I liked Mechwarrior 2's solution to that. If you didn't hit very specific bounding spheres but just hit the big 'general sphere' that made up most of the `Mech, it'd randomly determine your damage location.

Of course, that didn't help the Jenner in MW2:M since its head sphere poked a good ways out of the general sphere so it was practically impossible to miss, but eh.

MW3 was by far the worst offender because you could unlock the weapon tracking from the torso - I think caps lock did it - and just aim with the mouse cursor directly. It's easy enough to control legs and torso independently with the keyboard, and it was more or less impossible to miss. Click mech body part, deal damage.
