I have been thinking of finally upgrading my sound system. I have had Kenwood receivers and speakers in the past. I now run a Logitech Z5500 setup, honestly doesn't sound bad, but it is getting a little dated. I have been looking at klipsch speakers and not sure on receiver just yet, i dont need it to be the greatest receiver but i am going to go to 4K eventually, so just a receiver to handle the HDR and Dolby Vision passthru and the DTS-MA stuff, not looking at going atmos whatsoever, 5.1 works fine, maybe 7.1, but to start i would just stick with a 5.1 setup and just not sure what to bundle together.

What’s your budget? I’ll also repeat my advice from a while back and say maybe start with 2.0 or 2.1. If you like Klipsch the new reference RP series are supposed to be good.

I have had 5.1 sound for 20 years, I will skip the 2.0/2.1 recommendation but thank you. My budget isn't exactly unlimited but i can take my time and piece it together. 300 or so on speakers, then a sub, and then a receiver. So essentially my budget would be about $1,000.

Do not try to cobble together a 5.1 system for $1000.

I'm looking at Denon, Marantz, Yamaha for receivers

Klipsch for speakers?

Yamaha for subwoofer? 10-12" not down-firing.

Please link the equipment you're looking at.

i'm not even sure what i'm looking at. i am not trying to build an audiophile system here, your budget seems high for speakers. i mean look at what i am using now. The Logitech Z5500 https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-THX-Certified-Digital-Surround-Speaker/dp/B0002WPSBC

that you're probably used to don't hold a candle to a proper system. Going from that to a properly designed $1000 2.1 system would be a massive upgrade in every way that will change the way you think about home theater. More speakers isn't always better.

ok, i'm not looking at packaged things like this whatsoever. I get that more speakers isn't necessarily better, BUT, when i watch movies i like the immersion of 5.1 and my logitech does alright but i know i can get crisper, clearer sound with better quality speakers and a receiver. I used to have a nice 12" 100 watt powered woofer, receiver, lost all that in a breakup, had the z 5500's for my pc from said breakup and put those in my living room for now and got a Klipsch 2.1 system for my PC.

I was literally going to recommend this exact receiver. Should do you just fine.

If you're really into Klipsch, these are what I'd do on your budget.

https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-RP-250F-Floorstanding-Speaker-Ebony/dp/B00S2N4BDO

Please don't get Klipsch speakers without actually going to a store and listening to them first - they have a very specific house sound that many people don't like. Other options in the price range:

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Floorstanding-Speaker-Black/dp/B07B4V37VV/ref=sr_1_5
https://www.aperionaudio.com/collections/towers/products/intimus-4t-tower-speaker-stealth-black (I have these sitting in front of me. They're great and they do free in-home trials)
https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Floorstanding-Speaker-Single/dp/B000V2OQL6/ref=sr_1_6
https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Signature-S55-American/dp/B01LWB2LIX/ref=sr_1_5

Floorstanding speakers are sold individually; you must buy 2!

Lastly, you need a subwoofer.

Budget recommendation:
https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-12-Inch-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B000092TT0 - I have this and for the price, it's crazy good. A little boomy, but so cheap for what you get.

Typical thread recommendation:
https://www.amazon.com/SVS-SB12-NSD-400-watt-Controlled-Subwoofer/dp/B009F8Y7SO - SVS makes some kickass subs, but they are a little pricey and if it comes down to it, I'd rather spend that money on my fronts.

There's your $1000. Get something like that and you can fill out the rest later.

Ok, besides Klipsch then, what are some other recommendations? I like the SVS subs but hot drat they are pricey.

Ok, I recently upgraded my system with a used Denon Receiver, not sure of the model. Gist of this post is I have a pair of Polk S55 Tower speakers and a Klipsch R-10SW 300 watt sub, a 55" TCL 4K Series 6 TV. Basically I am looking to upgrade the Denon receiver to handle 4K and all the new audio codecs, eventually I am going to add rear surrounds to make it 5.1 again.

I don't have the room to do more than 5.1. So I have been looking at other Denon or Yamaha receivers, but just get a little lost on which specs I should be looking for a decent receiver to do this that is not going to break the bank.

$500 would be my high end of budget for this, but will take into consideration going a little higher with what some of you fine gents can suggest for me. Thank you!

so my question is, is 80 watts a channel enough for the S55 Polk's? what kind of amps should I be looking at if any?

To be fair, I also find B&W speakers either ugly or nondescript, and I get what Toebone is saying about the tatty looking trim that B&W have decided to go with since they ditched the signature yellow Kevlar for some reason (probably because companies like KRK and Fluance were doing it too).

Toebone- rather than talking about things you don’t like in speakers what elements do you like?

If I gave you a list of brands to look at, would you check them out and see if any elements strike your fancy? Snark aside, there’s like a jillion speaker companies making speakers of all different looks.

Triangle Audio (specifically the Borea line)
Monitor Audio (pretty much all of their lines)
Wharfedale (specifically the Linton and Denton 85)
Klipsch- both the RP series in piano black or the Klipsch Heritage line (these are pricey and dumb- in the best way- toys for hobbyists, but they’re all about fancy finishes and aesthetic and poo poo)
JBL- I like white woofer cones
Polk Audio- their brand new mid tier line looks v. nice, a return to form for a brand that IMO’s been languishing for a long time
Q Acoustics
Zu Audio

....I’ll add more attractively designed speakers as I remember them

What are your thoughts and anyone elses on B&W AM-1 outdoor speakers? I listened to Monitor and Focal? Felt the B&W sounded the best, paid $700 for the pair. Installation was really pretty easy, and I thought very well made.

i am looking at grabbing a pair of Sennheiser 650's for some music consumption. What are some good headphone amps to use for these? I will be using a RPi4 with a Hifi Digi HAT to feed into the amp. 650 is still the most decent ones to go with for headphones? i am open for suggestions, been looking at getting a pair of 650's for awhile.

Finally got my Wiim Amp Ultra, I was worried about headroom with my 85dB speakers but normal listening volume is like 35/100, and was 40 to 50 on my Integra which is 100WPC class G. Default sub output seems a little hot compared to the AVR.

I haven’t delved much into configuration or done the room correction but if I worked at an AVR company I’d be mad/scared. The out of the box is so nice, as long as there being a mandatory app doesn’t upset you. Roon works perfectly. If this had Airplay/Apple Music I could recommend it to so many other people.

The potential for long term enshittification exists but for now they’re a scrappy underdog so the value proposition is solid.

seems like a cool device, pricey little bugger tho. what made you go with this out of curiosity?

I was comparing it with other AVRs and integrated amps with ARC, Roon Ready and room correction, especially once you got into buying a Dirac license, even refurb Onkyos were in the $800-1000 range. So it was actually cheaper than those. Coupled with how hard PAC, Voxx, etc. are struggling I didn’t want to buy another giant 40lb brick with janky firmware. I was also looking at the Eversolo Play but there’s usability quirks that turned me off to it. If I had infinite dollars I probably would have ended up with something like the NAD M10 or Cambridge Evo 150.

For normal people without audio brainworms the Amp or Amp Pro are probably fine, I paid extra mostly for the little screen for cover art now that I know I probably won’t even turn the thing past 60% but I’m cool with it. That said there’s definitely a risk going with a newer, smaller company, once Sonos melted down all the people I recommended it to yelled at me first.

these seem cool for when you don't have a receiver or need to replace a receiver for sure. I have been using raspberry pi's with hifiberry hats for years with roon. HifiberryOS, if you use their OS, your pi with hat shows up as a roon ready device! they work really well, i have the HiFiDigi, and HiFiDac2HD and the HiFiAmp2 floating around my house. they are remaking their OS into 64-bit with a bunch of improvements and features, it is still in alpha stage.

What was it you didnt like about the Eversolo Play? I was looking at that as an option but decided against primarily due to price and it having a bunch of stuff I dont really need but I didnt see anyone saying anything particularly negative about it when I was looking at reviews.

Also, maybe someone can enlighten me about the Roon thing. People are really paying a subscription fee to listen to their own music/streaming services they already pay for? Help me out here, cause that sounds dumb as heck.

I will take a stab at the Roon thing. I wish i paid for the lifetime years ago when it was only 4 or 500 bucks. it is now 800 something bucks! I pay 149/year right now. Yes, I too thought it was dumb, but it is a really slick piece of software with multiple ways to have your stereo systems utilize it. The thing that got me initially to keep using it was I had a decent sized library and I tested out its radio feature. Picked a song i like from an artist and let it fly on its own. It picked tracks in my library I never heard before by artists i like, it dove really well and mixed it up really well, better than anything i have ever tried.

Now i have a Tidal sub as well, it ties that into it and expands my library exponentially. Like i stated before, i use raspberry pi's with hifiberry hats to get the good sound quality and pass it on to my receiver with the digi hat for my hifi stereo and another one for my garage/patio, and dac2hd for my amp for my headphones, and the amp for some bookshelf speakers. You can sync up multiple devices in different areas, nice for parties.

It also has headphone EQ's done by pros for a ton of specific headphone sets. https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/muse

i could refer you and you get 30 days to try it out. anyone for that matter!

oh also, they have Roon ARC now, so you can stream to your phone/device remotely with the app and still access your Tidal or whatever other streaming service you tie into Roon

As someone who got a Plex lifetime sub for $50, I will almost certainly never pay for Roon because I have my set up designed around Plex's limitations, but Roon can definitely do some things that other options can't. Really should be an open source solution that doesn't suck but, alas.

plexamp has improved over the years. I got my plex lifetime at $65. Roon still blows plex away in my opinion. Open source roon alternative would be amazing, i hate paying for it, but i have had it so long and it does really good stuff. Turning raspberry pi's into roon endpoints is fantastic. Roon hardware is really expensive for the licensed stuff.

IMO, buy an AVR and start with a 2.0/2.1 system. You can always add more speakers to an AVR.

this. 2.0 and 2.1 can sound really good and movies yea the surround is cool and all, but a good 2.1 setup emulates it pretty well these days too. I have a good 2.1 setup and will be eventually going up to 5 or 7.1 when i move into a bigger house. A good sub really makes the theatre experience at home much closer to being in a theatre with cheaper popcorn and snacks.
