My wife was having problems a few years ago with back pain. She saw a specialist for everything - physical, arthritis, you name it. Each and every one diagnosed her as having their specialty as her problem and immediately pushed for heavily invasive surgeries or life altering medications.

We were really skeptical that a 24 year old otherwise healthy person could have severalbulging discs and degenerative arthritis.

She went to one last Ortho for a second opinion and thank goodness for him. Before escalating, he had her try simple PT for a month and referred her to a therapist because he thought it could be a small injury made worse by stress reaction and muscle imbalance.

About 90 days later she was fine and has been fine for over 5 years. I shudder to think what our lives would have been like if we had trusted the first 3 doctors we saw.

I used to look down on people screeching you shouldn't trust the medical system but holy. poo poo. what a nightmare.

Medical systems can be nightmares. I'm five years sober, but in my hometown the doctors all assumed I was still a drunk. It turned out I had severely hosed up internal organs from a previous surgery. I moved, they did one ultrasound, and popped me on blood thinners and hydromorphone telling me I'd drop dead soon if I hadn't gotten on that medicine.

Even with a positive ALS diagnosis, I have to get a second before it's official.

Jesus, please God you grapple folk, get second and third opinions and don't be afraid to travel if needed. Some doctors blow.

Edit: Words of advice to those who haven't experienced back/neck issues yet... take strength training and yoga seriously.

This is my personal story. Ignore it completely.

About 10 years ago I started having horrific pain in my lower back. I got an MRI and I had 2 severely bulging discs in my lower back. Doctors were telling me to absolutely do surgery, that I had degenerative disc disease.

I told the doctors I wanted to go full on physical therapy and try to fix it and not to do surgery. I immediately learned all I could about compressed discs and started doing split table traction and making decompression stretching part of my workout routines. I also quit doing things that would further damage my bulging discs.

About a year ago I had another MRI. Bulging discs gone. Pain gone.

I came back from an injury a lot of people don't come back from. But it cost me adding about 10 minutes to every workout and not doing things that hurt my back (picking up furniture, running, etc).

When I roll, I tap fast if somebody does something that I feel could mess my back up. It's embarassing, but who cares.

*edit* Although this is a sport with people who understand what it's like to have an injury and are usually very cool and respectful if you just explain you've got a neck thing.

My sciatica got so bad after overtraining when I restarted bjj last year I couldn't walk at all for a week, and it took another 4 weeks of physio 3 times a week to get back to 'normal'. Once I shook the Physio's hand after our last session he admitted when I first came in he was sure I was going to need surgery.

I appreciate all the perspectives on back pain. Definitely taking it easy this week and building in some more stretches. Fortunately, right now its more muscle pain than spinal injury since its all related to the area of injury and isn't "flaring" out. Still, better to be proactive about it before it gets worse I guess.

No one has come off as an rear end in a top hat at my place yet, which is nice. There is a purple belt who is a little stiff and begrudging but hey he's a purple belt paired up with a white belt.

Of course, if no one else is the rear end in a top hat that just makes me worry that I its me. I am the rear end in a top hat. :ohdear:

What’s a good way to finish a RNC in a gi if I can’t get under the chin and don’t want to squeeze anyone’s face?

I’ve been training 9 months and can only remember maybe 2 successful RNCs.

I have mixed feelings on this. guys will do this pretty frequently with my RNC & paper cutter at my gym and I'll usually not want to be a jerk and neck crank or chin crush them, but there are a few dudes who just do it religiously like it's a defense and come back with "you know that was more on the chin.." and I'll feel like a goon but your jaw isn't going to stop me or anyone from twisting your head off my dude

tbh I'll usually switch over to a collar choke in the gi. between wanting to avoid the face squeeze / neck crank and how many neckless muscleboys I roll with, I don't remember the last time I got a pure RNC in the gi

You move on, because if you're unwilling to face lock someone there's no way to finish an RNC grip from there. Go to a lapel choke or an Armbar instead.

edit: Technically if you feel you're strong and they haven't gotten a grip of the strangle arm yet, drive your palm across their chin which will turn their head. Use this to dig your hand and arm under their head. This isn't a great option at all and again you should just switch to a more open submission.

Just aggressively alternate crossfaces right under their nose. They'll lift their head up eventually. If someone isn't defending an RNC with their hands and body then you can be really abusive.

in the interest of maintaining good gym etiquette I wouldn't make this your go-to, but I feel like every now and then the guys that think this is a way to defend should be reminded that it absolutely isn't

And re RNCs - not to go over the chin encourages bad habits and bad escapes. Squeeze slowly and drive that choking arm in and up. Everything above the neck is neck. In the long term it's good for people.

An old gym nemesis used the "he's getting really strong!" while referring to me during kings of the mat a long time ago, he never rolled with me since that "compliment".

A few weeks later he rolled with a small dude that hosed his poo poo up. he ended the round having tapped more than half a dozen times, went, to the sidelines and said "yeah, I'm working on my defence today and taking it easy" to everyone within earshot.

I don't see that guy around the gym anymore.

stop the fucking fight, cornerman, your dude is fucking done and is about to be killed.
i'm 6' 85-90kg so i'm a fully grown man but i like to play bottom half / full guard a lot and if i get on top i've generally worked there so no grumblings of me being big / strong in a bad way. at least none that have reached me. and i'm kind of conscious of it.

the problem is though that we've only got a couple of real heavyweights in our mt class and they rarely have sparring partners so i feel obliged to circle in with them. they absolutely love me for it but my brain doesn't. if i'm going too hard on the smaller guys in bjj they can rock up 10 minutes early and watch me get battered around a ring by an enormous fijian dude if they want.

The koreans I roll with used to say "very heavy" after I sparred but didnt mean it as in a weight dig. They were meaning it as "strong top game" according to one of the guys who speaks English fluently.

Took a little bit to figure it out as older koreans arent abashed to lay out a body image insult to people.

We also did sparring only last night and at 80% humidity with about 80F and the Korean desire to use a window and not AC to cool off, I felt like death after an hour.

I'm joining Rilion Gracies home jui jitsu academy at the end of the month since it will be on my way home from work. This will be the first time I've ever done jui jitsu in a structured way. I have little to no grappling experience apart from wrestling and rolling no gui with a few friends who are blue/purple belts on and off for about a year. It's all gui. I spend alot of time attempting to hold frame, not get my back taken and scooting around on my rear end.

I've boxed for approx 3 years and was an instructor to a bunch of bored housewives and beautiful young women when I was single but that means gently caress all for this.

Do you wear a cup?

Or do you just let your dicks smoosh

E: also what do you wear under a gui? Shirt, no shirt? Athletic shorts or just compression pants?
