I don't think Ryan and Caio's styles are very similar. At the very least (based on training with Ryan) the style you often see from Ryan in tournaments from yester-year is not really the style he preaches/believes in these days.

Ryan advocates a very top-heavy pressure based game. The best guy to watch for that would be Rodolfo Vieria. Another good guy that does some interesting stuff is Leandro Lo. If you've never done BJJ or grappling before, you're probably going to miss out on 99% of the stuff though. It's hard to watch and understand what top pressure really is unless you experience it from a high level guy. Ryan weighs around 150 but he feels heavier than most blue belts that weigh 200-250 (no joke).

This has the potential to be the dumbest system ever. I hope the qualifiers are filled with newbs that have less than 6 months worth of grappling experience.... but can refresh a webpage like a champ.

I suppose we'll see! I doubt that the fee will have much impact in markets such as DC or NYC; the rate is only moderately higher than the ibjjf rates to be honest. I guess the best news for those competing is that there will be so few competitors that they won't have to sit around all day waiting for their name/bracket to be called :)

One thing i'm not really sure about is he says that reaping the knee in no-gi is alright but I can't find concurring with that in the IBJJF rulebook, it actually seems to say it's actually illegal no matter how advanced you're competing at. Can anyone confirm? Deny?

Aye, IBJJF went full derp and made it illegal at ALL levels. The 'cool' thing to do now in IBJJF tournaments is to deliberately throw your opponents leg into a reaping position, scream in pain, and win via DQ. *sigh*

Worth listening to. Dan Gable talks about how training smarter, not harder, could have prolonged his coaching career and led to even more success.

Not many people have ever worked harder on the mat than Gable, so you don't get much more authenticity when it comes to advocating an intelligent approach to training.

It's been long enough now that I don't fully remember but he had my back and I had defended all the choke and armbar attempts but had gotten into a positionally terrible flattened out position and he just suddenly grabbed my head and yanked back and explosively levered his cup into my lower back. As soon as he did that there was a cracking/breaking sound from my spine, I think I tapped from the feeling that something was very wrong although there was surprisingly not as much pain as you would expect. My back was sore initially but not unduly so The next day my ankle started hurting and I thought I had hurt my ankle during the roll. Over the course of a couple of week the ankle pain grew into tremendous leg pain and weakness. When I saw a ankle specialist who works with NFL guys, he told me nothing was wrong with my leg that it was all my back. By this time I had massive foot drop and pain so excruciating that I would walk 4-5 step using a cane and have to stop to deal with the pain then resume 4-5 steps. I was still going to work every day and it would take me a loving half hour to walk to the subway. I got an epidural injection of steroids that didn't do poo poo. So I went for spine surgery to remove the ruptured stuff. The surgeons told my wife when they opened me up that absolutely everything was ruptured and that they were surprised that my symptoms weren't bilateral and that I was still continent. I asked them to deal with only the rupture on the symptomatic side. They wanted to do everything but I didn't want the risk. I took a long loving time to rehab my leg to regain strength in that leg. But thankfully things are good again. I still train hard and am perfectly willing to wrestle good collegiate wrestlers. I still shoot doubles. So I've been very fortunate. I still don't have full feeling in my foot although I have full strength and the fact is I may never fully feel my foot again. It'll just be numb for the rest of my life.

Wow dude, surprised you're back to (relative) normal! So did they give you a synthetic disc, or did you go the fusion route? I messed up my L4 awhile back and that completely killed my training for a couple of years. Even now, I can't do a 4 a week training regime without going to yoga for 3-4 days in conjunction with wrestling/bjj.

It also seems that a lot of the lighter guys are into the leg game. I can't tell if its because they're better for thinner longer guys? I asked before and some leg lockers said actually its harder due to leverage mechanics but still, the Ryan Hall types are all going for knee attacks constantly.

In Ryan's advanced classes, he almost exclusively teaches a pressure top game these days. He kind of moved in that direction after his last two IBJJF defeats. Space is a pain to come by at times and you either need to force it (somehow) or hope the top player messes up. He actually has a wrestling game (although since he's not a natural athlete, doesn't really have the explosive power), and his top pressure is literally some of the worst top pressure I've ever encountered.

I'm a lighter guy (~150), but I got into leg locks because of training with Ryan and Seph. People don't train in leglocks as much as other stuff, so if I can get to a position that not many folks are comfortable with, easy wins for me. My legs are kind of short to the point that I can't do stupid triangles, so not sure why I'm comfortable in 50/50 and the likes :iiam:

Anyways, that's a long way of saying that he's selling DVDs and the likes for money, and will probably gladly take your money for leglock privates, but if you're training with him on a day-in, day-out basis, expect to do lots of wrestling and to be pushed into a top-heavy game.

I trained there for about 5 years and now I train over at Dave Jacob's place over in Tyson's (after being a bit of a bjj hobo across DC for about 6 months) . I don't want to start bjj drama or anything, but before you go anywhere, I'd look at the competition team page and ask if any of those members are still there, where they are at now, why they left, etc. If you can put up with everything, its incredibly amazing instruction, and if you're just getting started, he'll teach you concepts that you'll remember for the rest of your life (I.e., teaching concepts and not moves)

Seph used to teach the basics class, but not sure who is there teaching it now. Maybe jen or Kenny. Kenny is a really awesome teacher but I don't think he's there as much anymore. Seph is an incredibly amazing teacher too and if anyone stops by Richmond they should check out his new school.

We didn't have fundamentals 1 and 2 when I was at 50...it was just basics and advanced, with advanced being for blur and above.

I'd try out both Dave's and Ryan's if you're there for a couple of days. Theyre both like a few miles away from one another. Dave's has open mats on the weekends and people from different gyms across DC stop by.

I wasn't going to say anything because I thought I'd be in the minority, but there are certain types of yoga that have been significantly more "brutal" than any wrestling/bjj class that I've ever been to. I do hot vinyasa flow yoga, and while i realize there are differences between yoga place within hot vinyasa flow, let alone, other types of yoga, this place kicks my rear end more than any wrestling or bjj practice has ever have. My BJJ coach and I (we both have hosed up backs), go to the same yoga school, and we routinely bring in bjj black belts to our yoga classes (black belts whom everyone has seen on live-streams), and each of them is like "fuuuuuuck". I remember back whenever I thought I'd never be able to do bjj again and I looked at fencing as something that might be fun (at least from a footwork standpoint), but drat.... there are some types of yoga out there that will break you a lot quicker than any wrestler or bjj class will ever break you. just my two cents.

Depending on your school, you can always just drill bjj crap and not actually do anything 100% as well. When i thought my back would never be 100% again (prior to yoga), i went to a new bjj school and asked if i could just drill crap and never do randori. The teacher was very accommodating to my back issues.... and after yoga miraculously fixed back issues, i'm back to doing bjj full time again. Not sure what i'm saying, but if you asked me if i'd do yoga 10 years ago, I would have laughed at you. Nowadays, after participating in the "this is good for your body" type of yoga rather than the "this is BS yoga to make your mind think you're doing something psychical rather than doing something pragmatical" variety, i'm convinced.

Guy A then said something like, 'if you'd ever competed or had any inclination to compete you'd know what it takes to win', indicating he knows ways to win, aside from footlocks, so he doesn't need to study them.

Everyone in my gym is very friendly towards each other & I've never noticed any hostility against people who don't compete, so this struck me as odd. I get on well with all my team mates & do compete so I dunno if I just haven't witnessed any sort of derision, at least in my direction. What's the atmosphere like where you are? Is there a divide? Share! I care.

The only 'divide' I ever really hear about or see are competitors complaining about folks who do not compete giving up top position too easily, and in general, rolling with the attitude of "well, you were going to catch me anyways, so I kind of stopped trying." That's really the only quasi-bit of hostility that I can think of. I used to be annoyed with folks who rolled with that type of attitude, but now I just simply don't roll with those guys.

It's even a faulty line of thinking with things like facelocks, really -- sure, they are something that can be "forced" in certain circumstances, but they are also possible to do with technique. Having a strength advantage allows you to be less technical with any kind of sub, that's just the nature of the sport.

Literally every competition I've ever been to has allowed bicep slicers at all levels.

I used to play a ton of lasso guard when I first started out BJJ. One of the most prominent sweeps can end up into a bicep slicer, but knowing the rules, I'd also make a great emphasis in letting go super-early, even though I'd mess with my sweep. At either rate, it got to the point in a couple of IBJJF competitions (like quarters, semis when folks would eventually watch matches and gameplan) that they knew my game, and I've had idiots (oddly enough, they were always Brazilians) pre-emptively tap as soon as I started my sweep to get the cheap DQ (bicep slicers were (are?) a no-no a bluet in IBJJF tournaments). I guess these are the same people who went onto deliberately throwing an opponents leg into a reaping position and screaming in pain to get the DQ. One of the things I always loved most about comp BJJ - when you can't win, win by a fake DQ!

Which also reminds me of a similar time in a sub only where my opponent decided to go into the infamous assball position for literally 45 minutes. I was annoyed so I decided to simply drive my knee into kidney, or just place enormous amounts of top pressure on him the entire time. After 45 minutes, I was getting rather annoyed/tired so I mounted, but because he was in the assball position, I needed to use my arm to drive back his head in order to get my choke. Dude tapped and immediately complained to the ref saying that he tapped to a neck crank and that since neck cranks were illegal at blue, he should be the winner. Ultimately, the ref laughed and recent us and I won like 20 seconds later... but it was like... really?!
