not all tragedies are interesting, but tragedies that don't commit are always boring.

Psychomax posted:I got wisps of that while playing act 3, but they could have done it a lot better. The way it's written, the biggest "sacrifice" you make is that you lose out on all the satisfying character growth from act 2. Michelle can survive act 1, so I guess they assumed that's the choice players made?

What's the pedigree of the studio that's doing the Dai no Daibouken anime? Because they're really, really good at what they're doing. The animation is topnotch, the fight scenes are really well animated and even when they use CG it's done pretty well.

Toei is very hit or miss, that said even they aren't stupid enough to piss SE, Shuesha and the DQ fandom off at the same time.

I don't usually celebrate the death of people, but well World is better without that bigoted atrocity denying asshat.

Judge Tesla posted:Hopefully DQ12 has more variety in its music and not the same tired old tracks again. It turns out Sugiyama had an eternally binding contract with Square that all DQ games must have his music one way or the other. Hope you like some nostalgic tunes.

For the most part I love his scores. I just don't like when the more bombastic tunes are overused.

His obituary says that he finished work on DQ12 before he died, so you'll have to wait until DQ13 to hear some new music.

He had some lovely views but hearing the soundtracks to the NES Dragon Quest games transports me back to my childhood, watching my mom play them and occasionally getting to help grind levels for her as she did stuff around the house. I can’t express the dichotomy better than Nadia Oxford did about his passing: “...Kids, try to live a life that'll let people mourn your passing without compromise.”

Good riddance. Guy was a real piece of poo poo, and no amount of iconic music will make up for that, no matter how it makes me feel.

Rest in peace, Sugiyama. You will be missed, even if your political/social views won't be.

I can't wait for Resetera to try and take down every single Japanese composer/game director who pays condolences to Sugiyama (for the record I think Sugiyama is a vile piece of poo poo and I don't mourn him at all, but I can't deny that his music is legendary and influenced many Japanese composers)

Sugiyama seems like a bad dude but I'm unaware of his bad views were ever particularly influential or consequential on domestic policy, or if he was just an unsurprisingly racist and homophobic 90 year old. Like was he out there recruiting or using his money to hurt people, or did he just personally have lovely beliefs?

He was a good composer decades ago. DQXI's music wasn't particularly memorable compared to the earlier work but his NES/SNES era stuff was overall good. Unlike his views or behavior as a person. He should've retired 20 years ago.

When talking about LGBTQ youth that faced high suicide rates in Japan, he was essentially “lol gently caress ‘em.” I don’t care if he made good music, that is insanely ghoulish

It is kinda crazy that he was doing video game music in the 80s when he was in his late 40s/early 50s.

There was the time he was part of the group that wanted to take out full page ads in the washington post and new york times that was full of "facts" concerning nanking and to let people "come to their own conclusions" It was in 2007 and both papers told them to gently caress off in the nice way so the ads were never run but I'm willing to judge based on the intent here
