Yeah, I finally got 6 today. Kind of ridiculous that Gamestop didn't have it until two days after release, but that doesn't matter now.

While I like the graphics of the DS remakes, it's kind of too bad that they didn't keep the original SNES graphics. It's been a while since I played it, but I remember it being pretty good-looking, about on par with Chrono Trigger.

I'd forgotten how good the music was. The town theme is so drat cheerful. Party Chat should be fun, too, once some folks join the team.

e: I like metal grinding because it feels more rewarding to get big chunks of EXP after patiently hunting them, rather than gradually levelling the normal way.

Metals are kind of bad for DQ6 and 7, though. You want to focus more on grinding up your classes instead of your levels.

It's so nice to have a casino again after DQIX didn't have one.

Or maybe it's a bad thing. I already cleared out the gift shop, so maybe I should stop playing slots now.

It looks like the remake still has that obtuse bit where You have to wear the Noble Garb to get into Somnia Castle. Sure there's an NPC who basically tells you to do that, but it's still a non-intuitive solution since there aren't really any other times in the series that your equipment affects story progression. I wonder how many first-time players will get stuck there.

Ah yes, gambling.

I just spent the last 90 minutes raising a pot of ~70,000 tokens at the casino and now my duders are much better equipped for the fight with Murdaw.

Are there more casinos or should I just buy a grip of Yggdrasil Leaves?

edit: That fight went much better this time around.

Too bad every character can't equipment the Platinum Mail and Dragon Shield. They render the Hero and Carver darn near invincible for a good bit of the story.

If I remember correctly, the casinos in this game are like DQVII where you encounter more of them later on, and they have different reward items.

e: If you need money, get some of the tuxedos. They only take 500 tokens and sell for almost 3000 gold. Maybe another item has a better token-to-gold ratio, but these have served me well enough so far.

Yeah, I've run a few times in DQ6. Most particularly from those mud monsters in Murdaw's castle who spawn in groups of three or four and love to spam Whack.

Really, a frequently-appearing monster that spawns in large numbers and casts a relatively effective instant death spell is just plain mean. They made me suffer my first total party kill in a Dragon Quest game in a long time.

Also, to make it slightly more on topic, anything special I need to know for 8? I've played 1-3 on Game Boy and 4 and 9 on DS.

You're going to want to put some points in Spear for the Hero, and Axe for Yangus. That way you'll eventually get Thunder Thrust and Hatchet Man respectively, both of which are pretty much necessary for killing the metal slimes. If you've played 9 then you should know what I mean. Jessica and Angelo don't get any such skills, however.

Be careful about wasting skill points. Don't put any points in Boomerang or Fisticuffs. Boomerangs seem great early on, but get less and less useful as you go along.

Doing the Monster Arena quest as early as possible (about the time you get your own ship) can be frustrating as hell, but quite rewarding since the last two prizes are the second-best scythe and the best spear (except for one in the post-game dungeon).

I haven't played any online games on the Wii before so I don't know how exactly this would work. Would I just be limited to playing with people I had exchanged friend codes with? If not, I'll definitely be interested.

Still, it's taking ages to get into the meat of this game. I'm beginning to think I picked a bad starting point to the series (and some sources tell me the same), because for now everything has been fetch quests and doing the same thing over and over. Of course, instead of refunding the game I'm gonna ask the thread what the best starting point to the series is instead...

Dragon Warrior 7 on the PSX was my first DW/DQ game back in the day, and I regretted it. It was only years later after I tried some of the earlier games that the series formula "clicked" with me and I was able to go back and enjoy 7.

I think 3 and 8 are good starting points. 8 because its design sensibilities are a little more modern making it easier for a newcomer to get into, and 3 because it's the most archetypal and as long as you understand how old the game is you can appreciate it for its qualities instead of being bothered by its old-school design, though I definitely recommend one of the remakes instead of the original NES version.

So I've been kinda stuck for a day or so. I get demolished by the bandits by Alltrades Abbey in the Present. Any good spots to grind? I've been currently grinding in the same area but in the past. Or should I even be grinding?

Level someone in Pirate or Paladin, both classes get Thin Air which is a very strong attack-all ability. Any encounters in the tablet dungeons at The Haven will get you job levels.

More importantly, Maribel's portrait owns and Gabo has a buddy now so this is a good remake imo

Gabo is great in party chat. He always wants to be friends with people. :3:

Is there a trick to getting monster hearts? I've never gotten a single one except for a slime heart from the card matching game and the healslime heart at Alltrades. Are they just really rare drops?

Tablet dungeons making sure to kill the desired monster last. It took me about 180 kills to get 5 for some of the monsters. That seems like somewhere between 1/10 and 1/20 chance, since you can only get a heart from the last monster killed.

Edit: Kills not battles

I've killed about 800 kingfuschias in the tablet dungeon that's nothing but kingfuschias, and haven't gotten a single heart. Am I somehow sabotaging myself by killing them with boomerangs, so there's not just a single "last" monster? I'll switch to single-target weapons and see if it helps.

"Drops its Heart," my rear end. Guess I just don't get to use monster classes!

That's over a thousand dead kingfuchsias, apparently the book stops counting at 999.

Could some copies of the game be bugged? A discrepancy between the physical cartridge and digital download versions? I have the actual cartridge, are the other people unable to get hearts from NPC tablets also playing the cartridge version?

Earlier I asked if there was a trick to getting monster hearts. As it turns out, there is! You have to go to the monster meadow and pick up the monster munchies. Before that point, monster hearts will not drop. Of course nothing in the game mentions this or even the existence of the meadow, you just have to stumble into it on your own.

I murdered a thousand kingfuchsias for nothing. RIP flower birds.

It's so dumb, I never saw the portal only because every time I walked around the tablet pedestal it was to the left side, if I'd ever walked to the right I would have seen there was a hallway leading further right. I only even learned of the existence of the monster meadow by searching online to see if anyone had the same problem I did.

Has a monster class guide yet been made that uses the new localization names? Everything I see uses the old PSX names.

Augh, apparently missed my chance to grind for Jawtoise hearts in the Sunken Citadel and may not see them again for some time. The monster class system is the one thing dragging this game down for me.

All of my deaths so far have been to Thwack. In SMT I go through the five stages of grief when something like that happens but in DQ I just laugh at my own hubris for not having the right items in my character inventories.

Death costs you nothing but money. I grind too much so I've got a good amount of money saved in the bank, plus a stack of prayer rings I won from the casino I can sell for cash any time. Laughing at death is an appropriate response in DQ. So far my only death was underestimating a tablet boss.

Aside from the previously mentioned Healslime and Drake Slime, Jawtoise is a good base level monster. It'll permanently teach you the Oomph and Kabuff spells.
