I've been replaying DQ8 and I'm struck by how archaic so many of its gameplay elements are, even for a PS2 game. Hell, even the Final Fantasy games were way better at these things going all the way back to the SNES games. They seem to be steadfastly rejecting QoL improvements of the time. I don't know if it's purely out of tradition or what, but they really should have fixed this dumb poo poo.

You can only save in churches and the save process takes twenty million years.

Reviving characters before getting the revival spells is a gigantic pain in the rear end. If a character dies, you have to leave whatever dungeon you're in, go to a church, and pay a huge percentage of the gold you've managed to scrape together just to revive one single character.

There is a revival item but you don't get it until late in the game, it's incredibly time consuming to get, and the game tries to make sure you only have one in your inventory at any given time although you can fool it and get two in your inventory. Imagine playing a Final Fantasy game and it only permits you to have one phoenix down and you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it.

And the first revival spell is so awful that it's almost completely useless, especially in battle. It has a 50/50 chance of reviving the person. Gotta love trying to revive someone in battle and having to spend twenty turns and all your MP casting the spell. Even when you get the good spell, if your healer gets killed then it's back to a church with you.

This is all completely unacceptable. Please tell me that the later games fix all this or I'm not even gonna bother.

If you're playing the 3ds version, the added a quick save option that's basically a normal save.

The only issue is that on the remake after like, maybe a boss or two post-Dhoulmagus everyone starts spamming their 'NO TENSION EVAAAAAAAAAAR' skill so it's really hard to make use of it by then.

Is there any good way to tell what enemies are weak to what spell in DQ8? Without the game telling me I'm doing extra damage, I'm real bad at noticing this stuff, as it turns out!

Especially since it seems that spells aren't that impressive.

(DQ8) This might be totally wrong but I remember reading somewhere that intimidating enemies is a more reliable way of making them drop items compared to Steal Sickle. Is that accurate? And if so, how does it work, because I'm trying to scare off witches and I've got two level 19 guys, one 18 and one 17 and it's not really working.

IIRC, the game checks when you'd get a drop by enemy group, so beating a Slime x6 mob means the same as clearing one. Intimidate makes it so the game checks by individual enemies, so yeah there's a big difference.

So it's actually more helpful when the game is weird about grouping enemies then. Weird.

If you're on the 3DS version you're probably better off just checking in on the respawning chests though. They give rare drops at decent rates, just time gated to 1 a day or whatever. If you're doing it for enemy book completion I vaguely recall the PS2 version letting you intimidate but on 3DS it definitely won't register it at all--needs to be an actual drop.

I'm just trying to get drops in general. Beyond Tales of Symphonia and Vesperia, I've never been assed enough to actually try and fill a bestiary.

DLC already gave me a gold nugget early on (Like, Maella Abbey-ish) which I used to make a King Axe so why not try and get a devil tail earlier than usual too?

Dhoulmagus is extremely mighty. When I beat him, Yangus and Angelo were dead, Eight didn't have Zing, and Jessica was barely keeping the two of them up with Caduceus. Eight was Oomphed and just keep Falcon Slashing and just barely managed to eke out a win with about 22 health between them.

Heads up everyone, if you're on 3DS, you get two save files if you save at churches but only one if you use the quick save function. Don't use the latter without making a formal prayer save first! Learn from my mistake!

Okay, I'm starting to get annoyed. Trying to get up the tower where your wife gets taken to and I'm making no progress after a point. Is there anywhere to get better medicines or do alchemy or better weapons that I'm missing? I'm using a Slime Knight, Sabercat, and bad apple(?) the red one. The sabercat does like 70-80 damage a hit at this point.

I'm about to just brute force it past those dragons and just get a bunch of herbs and magic waters and run through.

(Dragon Quest 5) I looked at the wiki for a bit of info and after learning that you can't actually just buy magic water, I bought a whole mess of herbs and used those to keep me going throughout the tower. Now I'm in the third gen. Any money grinding or monster tips? I didn't know slime knights weren't that good but even if they don't have the best stats, having something else around to use fullheal isn't that bad a trade for a party space.

Also, does anyone know if this glitch is still in the DS version?

I'm like 30 pages behind still but I've been having a pretty chill playthough on DQXI so far. Closest I came to wiping on a boss was because I went in without healing and it was the two Gryphons trying to nick the Red Orb. Everything else was pretty straightforward and easy.

Also, I thought they'd changed their AI because before the Gallopolis boss I ran into two of the most aggressive Metal Slimes I've ever seen in a game. They just kept attacking and attacking and throwing Frizzes at me for 6 damage. Killing the two of them got me up to 15 or 16 for the boss and it was pretty chill thanks to that. Serena picked up Midheal and that was all I needed to keep me running. Haven't had any issues so far but I did opt to not make the game harder so I'm happy to not be getting bodied left and right every boss.

Anyway, I've only played this and two other ones in the series 5- which I burned out on because I was trying to keep a save for each wife- and 8 which I actually did beat the main story of. How's 9? I've never really heard any talk on the series beyond on SA so I've got no idea how that one is. Granted, I don't really look around for people talking about Dragon Quest either though so I'm not saying that it's not popular or anything nuts like that.

So this is the fabled transition from Act 1 to Act 2 people were referring too. Well, I've only played 5 and beaten 8 before this so this is a much more intense raising of the stakes than I've ever seen in the other ones, holy poo poo. I thought DQ8 spoilers Failing to save the Godbird's egg was bad but this is a whole magnitude of worse.

That said, I was very sick of being the last one to wake up after every event though.

I mean, we didn’t really need one to have the other though in that instance, and alll things considered Jade being an evil bunny girl is kind of the low point of Act 2, which says more about the high points like everything involving Sylvando, Hendrick being a total bro, Veronica and Serena, and even the grandpa/grandson not-Kamehameha, but still.

Yeah, if you're not gonna do much with Act 2 Jade, I would've preferred if we had just kept finding Jockuleses and Dullahans embedded into cliff walls as it turns out that she'd been trying to regroup with everyone after the tree fell as well. Sure it wouldn't be spectacular but it's better than bunny girl against her will for monsters so I'd take it. Also whoever said it might've been right about her being a late addition or I'm doing stuff out of order, because I just went to Gallopolis and she just didn't exist at all in any of the cutscenes.
