The builders demo wouldn't let me change the default controls. Other than that, seems like a nice mix of actual game and building stuff.

Gonna finally break my 10+ year dry spell of DQ games.

How much actual game is there? I don't need another sandbox game, but if this is going to be an avenue to play through/make essentially DQ7 island sized bites of content it might be a good time killer.

As far as the demo goes, you only get to do stuff on the starting island. The demo leads you through all of the basic building, crafting, and combat stuff, but it leaves a few exploration secrets you can find on your own.

It's definitely a multiple island deal, but I don't know about what needs building on those islands. I got the impression all the city building happens only on the starting island.

Some more gripes: The UI could be better. When making items, you either make one at a time or all of them (including the raw mats in all chests). There's no durability bar for your armor outside the menu, just your weapon, so if you get hit a lot, expect to lose your armor without any warning. I also haven't found a repair function, but at least you can carry up to five weapons equipped at a time.

In dq builders, has anyone managed to kill the dragon? I tried to tunnel to him and attack but it failed hilariously.

Unequip your weapon and use just your fist to dig a one-wide, two-deep path to him. Once you're directly under him, you can equip your weapon again, hold L1 and spam that triangle until dead. Try not to take out too much dirt once you start swinging, you can take out a couple blocks but too many and the dragon will flop down to your level and you can't get him out.

I ended up having him body drill through five layers of dirt before I got it right.

I didn't get time to play DQB until yesterday evening. It's fun but it's taking a while for things to open up. I'm upset I can't change controls at all.

I got stuck with one of Larouche's requests and couldn't figure it out for some time. He eventually asks you to upgrade the stonemason's workshop into a studio. However, if you're a clever builder like me, you'll have already figure out putting both the mason's bench and the smelter in the same room turns it into a different room type. Larouche was not updating his request because the smelter is present.

Also, don't leave your town in dirt mode. I learned the hard way. Level 3 night mobs have those hammer guys. They break dirt blocks.

There's quite a few little things that are missing from what I'd expect from a minecraft-like, but just about what you'd expect from a jrpg/DQ is all there.

I have a question about chapter one. When you retrieve the evil idols, are you supposed to fight the mobs? Because that's what I did. I used the evil idols against them and had enough food/healing to survive, but I didn't get any prize for it. I eventually walked out and that's when the actual event ended, like that's what was supposed to happen. I did find the hidden magic boots and fireplace though.

When I did the roulette jackpot side quest, I didn't look for advice. I thought playing both black and red would cause it to happen, because a normal roulette table would have given it up at some point. 3 hours later, loving nothing. It was like the game was actively preventing me from gaming it that way.

Then I looked it up, tried to do the npc trick but the key phrase never came up after an hour. Then I did the 12/14 split thing with different numbers, almost got jackpot twice in a row, then got the jackpot after half an hour.

That's probably the worst side quest this game has offered. Not even the "hit the boss with the pep skill on the last hit" side quests are in the same ballpark. Not even the final wheel of harma gave me that much trouble.

However I felt much better after winning the jackpot on a 100-coin slot machine. It just so happened with 7 free spins left to go in metal mode that also had 7 left to go, too.

I've been avoiding this thread since DQB2's release, but now I think I'm close enough to the end that spoilers won't bother me.

Question for island three: Do I get anything out of burying bodies? They don't seem to be a specific quest and while I did bury them, I put them just outside the castle to the side.

Man I have so much to say about this game, I'm so conflicted because it does some things better than the first but some things worse and STILL no see-through roofs.

I'm an idiot who keeps thinking it's ok to build rooms and farmland much bigger than the limit. Like, it still boggles my mind that the game doesn't want you to build big.

Right when I decided to get my farm planned out on my island, I sat there for over a minute wondering why my fenced in farmland with scarecrow wasn't ticking as an enormous farm plot and it was because it's too big. So now I just have a fence around ~7 scarecrows.

It's disappointing that there's nothing hiding outside the main island in the isle of awakening. I flew the buggy buggy all the way around and there's a lot of just empty open ocean.

However, I did find a hidden chapel to hargon. There's a cave west-south-west of the mountain peak under the water. I think you need the sledgehammer to break apart the iron bars, but inside is a bunch of citadel themed pieces and a hidden room with more citadel pieces in it. Good spot to get the build a room in a low location goal.

Also, if you decide to explore under the water deep in the ocean, there is a bare ocean floor but it goes completely dark. There's a hidden monster out there too. It's a merman. But he hits pretty hard! I'm kinda curious because with end game gear it seems beatable, the only major drawback is that it's in the water. I might try experimenting with an arena, since I can drag it from the deep ocean to the shore.

It's funny that Brownbeard's reasoning is that his ship can't handle that kind of cargo... until you beat the island. Then you can carry as much back and forth as you like. And also it's fine hauling back all that stuff you found on the side islands pretty much anytime.

It's like they still wanted to do the thing they did in the first game and struggled to find an acceptable reason but couldn't, so they said gently caress it and rolled with it anyway.

It's a huge shame, they're so close to nailing a city management game and with a couple more iterations they could even shoot for a dwarf fortress kind of game. However I don't think the developers are even trying to make that kind of game. It's frustrating once the main story is over.

Minor complaint about builders 2.

After finishing the first island and the run-up to the second island I'm finally given the chance to kinda faff about on my island and maybe start making some stuff. However I really want to do some terraforming and level out a large village as a central farm/town square sort of area, but I can't break some of the blocks until (presumably) l get an upgraded hammer or w/e. So while this is the first time I get the freedom to do what I want I don't really have the tools to actually do anything with it unless I want to leave most of the geography in it's uneven mish-mash shape.

Guess I'll just go to the next island.

That's correct, you need a better hammer which you learn to make in the second chapter.

Also, you won't really get to mess around in peace until you can make wards of erdrick.

It's not a well thought out system.

So I picked up DQ11 on PS4 when it was on sale last year, played through the first hours and only go to where you use the keystone to step through the dimension door, just before Hotto. It was fine, though I found myself not super hooked by it. Life stuff got in the way so I ended up never getting back to it. Finally, I picked it up again and have just been playing just a little bit here or there. I just got to Gondolia.

How much should I be grinding for experience/money? All of my characters are level 13 (except Sylvando who joined at 15) and I feel like I'm always completely broke.

Also, how many skill points do we eventually get? Will I have enough to complete the tree? These skills are loving expensive, costing like 10-15 points when I only get like 3 per level. It doesn't feel great when I only am able to unlock one skill every 3-5 levels.

Luckily, the game is finally starting to land more for me. I'm not addicted to it yet, but I am finding it enjoyable to play a little here and there. I definitely haven't ever felt like "Oh gently caress, I have to keep going."

Like others have said, you don't have to grind... but if you just happen to be out in the world and you run into some metal slimes, I found that if you run around the area for a few minutes you'll have multiple encounters. If you can punk even one per battle that's about one level per fight at your level. I had some good luck in multiple locations where I'd get one every other fight for around a dozen fights.
