I bought DQ7 on the midnight of its release and I'm really enjoying it so far! My favorite thing so far (since I still don't have jobs) is that it provides that feeling of power that only Dragon Quest is able to do-- you feel the power that comes with new equipment or a level up. It's hard to put into words but anyone who has played a single Dragon Quest game knows what I'm talking about. That said, my favorite Dragon Quest, or really my favorite game of all time, is still Dragon Quest 8. I don't even want to know how many hours I put into that game, but I have three whole playthroughs that went enough into the bonus boss to get all the equipment, while alchemizing religiously. It has, hands down, the best party in any RPG. The skill system works better than the job system because it makes every character feel truly unique. And while everyone has their role in the party, they all feel multifaceted, and just changing skill emphasis can completely change the game. It's to the point where I didn't really care that the 3DS version had new characters because I don't think I've ever played a game besides this where every character feels versatile and complete. Also the world map, the graphics, the gameplay, even the story, while admittedly simple, are all perfect. I'll write some big long autistic effort post about all kinds of cool stuff in the game once we get closer to the 3DS release, but suffice it to say I'm loving hyped.

For example, V has a whole new bride for you to choose, who is also the best wife. e: All three games have lightning fast gameplay. So much that I can guarantee any RPG you play after will feel at best sluggish. ROFL Octopus fucked around with this message at 09:41 on Sep 24, 2016 |

Hokuto posted:Is the 3DS remake of DQ8 going to allow for skill point reallotment? That was my biggest gripe with the original DQ8, the scattering of relatively dead-end talent trees and the inability to commit to something else in the late game unless you wanted to grind skill point boosting item drops from enemies. Afaik, unfortunately no, BUT you can elect to stockpile points.

Dr. Fetus posted:I unlocked some tablet dungeons, and I happened to get something called a Slime Heart. What is that used for? I'm sure you know there are classes in this game. Basically Hearts are things that'll drop in tablet dungeons, among other places. When you unlock classes, have that in your desired character's inventory and they can take that monster as a class. There's more to it, but that's the gist.

Oh and I should mention that skills and magic from intermediate and higher classes don't transfer when you change class, but skills and spells from monster classes do!

Pretty much the only thing you need to know about dragon quest is to use all the tools given to you. Use buffs and debuffs, use those spells that are useless in other games. Instant death is shockingly effective. Quite a few bosses can be inflicted with status effects. These guys know what they're doing, so don't worry about optimizing (but feel free to!) and have fun.

Truspeaker posted:So I wasn't getting any hearts at all from anything but slimes in the tablets. Literally hundreds of battles, no hearts. I saved, then fully closed the game and reopened it and now Ive gotten 4 birdy hearts in 15 battles. Like, maybe its confirmation bias, but I haven't played anything else on my 3ds since I got to alltrades at least, and saving and quitting is literally the only thing I did to change things, and now monsters drop hearts again. I would love to know if someone else having that problem can fix it that way too. Well did you unlock classes? You at least grinded those. If not, goondolences.

Another great thing about hearts dropping much more frequently in tablets is it gives you a great source of income. Slime hearts sell for only 200 g but when you're bringing back like 30 a trip it adds up fast. Not that it's gonna change how I play cause job grinding is so addictive but how necessary/helpful is mastering as many jobs as possible for the postgame dungeon?

I've been using Lightning (level 8 sailor skill) and I'm wondering-- does it ever taper off? It's a free, hit all attack that's stronger than my iron ax, and it doesn't diminish in damage like a boomerang does. It just seems really really good right now.

Gotcha. I've put way, way, way more time into Dragon Quest 8 than into the rest of the series combined (or hell, any other RPG) and the skill systems are pretty fundamentally different. Powerful, but only temporarily so, skills isn't something I'm used to!

Your Computer posted:I'm looking at the DS remakes now and I love the art style! It reminds me a bit of Golden Sun (which I know gets a bad rep around SA) with it's watercolor-y and vibrant colors. I've played a little bit of several games now and liked all of them so I think I might actually just go through the games chronologically (unless there's a better order to play them in!) I can't believe how this series has gone so completely under the radar for me before now. The best part about the DS remakes is that they have possibly the fastest battles in any RPG, ever. e: And yeah just play them in release order. If anything, you gotta play the DS versions of IV, V, and VI, as well as the 3DS version of VII, but in general DQ remakes are really substantial and good. Do people have any idea if it is likely that these will cycle around? What was the situation in the Japanese release? You don't really need to worry about that. I'm almost certain they'll rotate around since that's what people are saying here, but even so it's nothing substantial like DQ9. They don't give exclusive items or monsters, rather they give you premade dungeons that otherwise you could make yourself or receive from other people.

From the look of it, that bundle has all of the day one content and some more stuff, but I'm not sure. I know that the Slime weapons are early-game weapons that don't last long, but I'm keen to collect stuff. The day one edition has only a few iirc. Nothing you can't get through DLC. One, whether you have the day one edition or not, you have to have PS+ for (Maya's fans). So yes, just buy the pack cause it's the only way to get the complete set anyway.
