I honestly can't remember the first three games because I played them so long ago.

I really enjoyed IV's introductory chapters and that helps push it over V on my list.

VII was great if you like grinding like I do, otherwise definitely not the strongest of the series. The vocation system is my favorite.

I haven't played VIII, but I thought IX was exceptional, mostly for the post-game content. They found a beautiful system for doubling or tripling the numbers of hours a player might put into the game without making it feel like you have to do it.

As an aside, did someone say they loved the prologue of IV? Cause it was, like, 3 seconds long for me. Did I do something wrong?

I mentioned that I enjoyed the introduction chapters for each of the secondary characters in the party. It was the only DQ game that actually made interested in the story behind the tertiary party.

The mini game is seriously curling? Curling? Ugh. Is there any point to it? I just cleared all the courses and didn't get anything fancy for doing so.

Also, I've reached Somnia Mk.II and I have no idea where to go from here. Some city in the south complained about their magic water tunnel caving in, and the King & Queen of Somnia are in a persistent sleep, but I can't find any actual quests. I haven't tried sleeping at the inn yet, though. I should probably do that.

More VI talk:

The thing I was missing was the whole "buy noble garments" part, but I managed to figure it out after a while longer. I was loathe to spend money on the rags, but I eventually did, gained entrance to Somnia and all was good. From there, I breezed the next few parts without consequence, and now I'm at the part where I have to go to Murdock's (?) cave.

I just got Ashlynn in my party and Ra's mirror and the rest of my team is around level 15. Nothing had been a challenge up until I reached this cave, and now suddenly I'm not just outclassed, I'm way outclassed by the mobs here.

Did I skip some parts of the story or side quests or something that are supposed to buff me up before I attempt this?

I just got through the area my second time trying, basically by spending some of the 12,000 gold I had been hoarding and making liberal use of consumables. It took nearly all of my MP, a dozen or more herbs, a couple amor essences, a magic water and a little luck, but I managed to defeat Murdaw. At least this time. I actually don't care for the DQ cliche of beating the boss early in the game only to have to repeat the battle near the end, but now I can move on. My characters all his level 17 before the final battle except for Ashlynn who was still <9.

This is the first DQ game where I actually am stopping to be impressed at the level design. The Towers of Mirrors were really neat, and the darkened approach to Murdaw was frustrating but rewarding to puzzle out finally.

Yeah, I had both Ashlynn and the hero run sap on Murdaw as needed. The Grrrgoyles became manageable once I upgraded Carver to a steel sword and Milly learned Bang.

I just spent the last 90 minutes raising a pot of ~70,000 tokens at the casino and now my duders are much better equipped for the fight with Murdaw.

Are there more casinos or should I just buy a grip of Yggdrasil Leaves?

I had pretty good luck with the slots when I went for the riches. I started with a 2000 gold bankroll (100 chips) and just maxed the cheapest slot until I had roughly 1,200 chips. From there, I moved up to the next slot machine at max bet until I hit ~10K, and from there I spun the richest slot until I hit several 30,000 jackpots (which is only middling on the pay scale for the best slot machine.)

I did have to reload once after losing my bankroll on the middle slots, so that's cheating but whatever. It could have been worse/taken longer.

Eegad, VI! :argh:

I've done a lot. I didn't realize the Abbey was open for a while after beating Murdaw, so I've progressed through a a few parts of the game before starting to master any classes. Now the hero and Carver are mid-20s and everybody in the party has one fully mastered class under their belts.

The last task I accomplished was escorting some sailor's mer-girlfriend back home, and now I think I'm supposed to patrol the undersea or something, but I'm not currently interested in doing that if there's more to see above ground.

Between the Flying Bed, Sea Vessel and Floating Island I have managed to explore most of both maps, but now I want to find another casino and none are showing up. I've read that two more available, but not where... Is there one I can go to that I should be able to reach already?

Also, are there good places to buy gear at this stage? I've got cash and I haven't upgraded my equipment in what feels like ages.

Finally, am I missing any recruits? I currently have Carver, Ashlynn, Millie, Nevan, Amos and Goowain. It seems like I should have come across more - and didn't I read something about slimes joining the party?

Yeah, I've investigated every well I came across, collected roughly 40 minimedals at this point and cashed them in. I've got hints and whispers about four pieces of legendary gear strewn about, but my access to them seems cut off still.

I went to close my DS screen a couple days back and the case and a hinge cracked, and now my top screen is all flaccid and floppy. That's pretty lame.

I'm still enjoying VI though. I've tracked down three of the legendary pieces of equipment including the rusty sword which is currently being restored to function by the good smith in thieftown or whatever. I think I know where to find the fourth piece so I'll be heading in that direction next. Besides the sword, I have the helmet and the shield - I imagine that body armor is next up.

Am I nearing the end of the game? I've only managed to complete about two masteries with each character so far, so prestige classes are still a long ways off. I have a feeling I'll be at the end before I open up the best vocations, unless there's a whole new section of the game that opens up after I get this final piece of gear.

Is class changing in DQ6 similar to DQ3 where most any mix of classes/roles will serve you well short of making everyone a Goof-Off?

Seems so. My only suggestion would be to get your melee fighters trained in Martial Arts until they learn Roundhouse Kick because that's a pretty awesome ability that hits an entire group for 0 MP, so it turns their best weapon into an effective whip. Pretty much every fighting class comes with useful skills though.

I haven't used much magic. I've been relying on the Staff of Ghent for healing 90% of the time, and most of my brawlers do far more damage with their weapons then my best mage can do with her second best spell (though Magic Burst is awesome for special occasions.) Even with Sage mastered, her spell damage lags behind the hero and Carver.

That being said, even classes like Gadabout and Merchant aren't useless.

Should I avoid going to the Dread Realm for as long as possible? My first foray there ended with me getting stuck and unable to find a path back to the real world, then eventually succumbing to a frighturn as my 1HP and reduced strength failed to save my life.

Also, that series of battles starting with the citadel and culminating in the fiend Durham was pretty awesome. I felt like a champ after running through them with little struggle, only to be deflated upon reaching Despairville.

So, grind-time it is.

I just fought my way to Mortamor. The bastard killed my primary healer in the first round. The rest of A-squad doesn't survive the next two rounds as a result, so the second string came in and barely managed to kill the son of a bitch, with about 13 HP remaining spread between three characters.

And then Mortamor laughs at me, assumes his crinos form and punishes me for daring to take a breath.

Meh, is there some trick to beating The Third Test other than spamming Kabuff to counter its constant use of Kasap? My healers (Ashlynn and Milly) keep getting gibbed in one or two hits since said boss is both quicker than them and does 40-50 damage to everyone when it's not doing 60-110 damage to one target with its 'normal' attack. Short of changing those two to warrior or martial artist just for this fight so they don't die so quickly and/or grinding levels, I can't think of a good plan.

I got stuck there too. I just went and ground up an extra level and made sure I had the best gear available at that point and the fight went much more easily the next time I tried it. I'm pretty sure I had two people devoted to Kabuff and Healing every round, with the hero healing also whenever they other two fell behind, while Carver did most of the actual attacking.

This Mortamor guy is a huge bag of dicks.

When I first reached him, I was level 39 and only had a few mastered classes under my belt. That fight saw my first string wiped out in just a handful of rounds while my second string team managed to beat Mortamor's first coming, but died shortly after to the next stage of the battle.

10-20 hours later, I've grinded my team up to the low 50s and high 40s. Most everybody has mastered all or most of the lower level professions and at least one fully mastered secondary class, while working on the next. The Hero mastered Paladin, Gladiator and Hero and was currently working on Dragon, having over 600 HP going into the fight with Mortamor.

And this time I found out that the bastard has three faces and the third one ripped my party apart. Again.

He's a huge bag of dicks.

I guess the conclusion is that it really depends on your style. Towards the endgame I use the top-tier 0 mp attack all abilities pretty much exclusively. The flail doesn't offer anything to that style because the abilities are not weapon-dependent. But if you play differently the flail may be useful to you.

What are your normal go-to skills?

My dragon is an easy choice where most things are susceptible to C-c-cold breath or Scorch, but the other characters not so much. I tend to use multifists on things with high resistances, roundhouse kicks on low powered groups, gigaslash on more significant groups and double up on everything else. The flail works really well for spreading damage out across four or more enemies divided into multiple groupings.
