Kind of amazed not a single Kurd was willing to give their life for the cause. All it takes is one shot, then the Iraqi army fires back killing more Kurds, who fire back in turn, and the whole thing explodes.

There has been sporadic fire, so it's not quite that simple. Deliberately starting a war your people can't win is pretty dumb though.

It's pretty convenient for Bashar that a popular and capable army commander is suddenly bumped off by a nameless landmine after surviving 3 years of being besieged by IS.

I was honestly thinking the same thing. A similar incident happened during Aleppo when a popular commander who had flipped sides twice died in the last days of the fighting.

Zahreddine probably would not have been able to challenge Assad even if he wanted to. The Sunni majority barely put up with the mystic wizard Shia offshoot being in power - how well do think a Druze president (and a military general no less) would sit with them?

lol what? those guys will do whatever they're ordered to, the national guard specifically is handpicked as die-hard loyalists no matter what.

Like, I could take one of those religious clerics to a flat out sex-drug-orgy at a princes house and they wont do anything about it.

What alot of people tend to forget is that the religious institutions in Saudi are essentially clerks and bureaucrats, their job is to apply orders from above and make normal people eat poo poo as much as possible unless ordered otherwise. It's why the lifting on ban on women driving met with zero resistance after they made entire generations of women suffer for no reason, you'd think that given how strongly they felt about it and how much they went after anybody who defied it they wouldve whimpered something about it but nope when your job is to be a bureaucrat its never to question the man on top.

The Iraqis are not an invading foreign power like ISIS. Not many people want to die over what is in the end an internal Iraqi dispute that has been going on for decades. A lot of people are going to be sick of fighting at this point, and while I'm sure some Kurds might be that passionate about independence, a whole lot of people just want to go home and have this be over.

So like, are there just a lack of named streets along the way? I mean we've seen plenty of places around the world where a few random stations get branding rights sold, usually because they're right near some big important attraction. But they're trying to get bids going on a whole quarter of the stations they plan to open? Seems pretty silly.

Even just selling full-station advertising rights to a quarter of the stations planned to be built seems like a pretty tough sell on a brand new system that's going to have a lot of unimportant stations as far as an advertiser is concerned.

It's not really surprising. Being under siege for multiple years would mean there's a fuckton of unexploded ordinance, IEDs, landmines, etc. littering the place that anyone could step on just roaming around talking to the troops. Could've been killed by his own defensive mines that were improperly mapped. It's also possible he was assassinated by an ISIS sleeper cell. Anyone capable of challenging Assad's rule or of questionable loyalty was put on meathooks in the various Baathist purges occurring throughout the war.

He would have been safe from a lot of the purges because he was isolated in dez though. It's just a conspiracy theory at this point, but the timing of "links up with SAA main forces, dies" is interesting. I think Occam's razor really points more to the people who were openly trying to kill him though.
