What's going to happen with Surt/Sirt/Sirte? Isn't that place like completely pro-Gaddafi?

Man, looking at all those people stomping and driving over the pictures of Gaddafi, that must be so satisfying for them. This is it! They win! Now, if only Gaddafi wasn't smart enough to leave Libya. He would've gotten the Ceausescu treatment.

Why is it so important to find the guy that pulled the trigger on Gaddafi? I go on Google News and every single Gaddafi story is about that.
![]() |
I haven't paid much attention to Libya ever since Gaddafi was killed, how has the country been progressing? Has a functional new government been formed? Is the country still undergoing reconstruction?

I'm pretty sure a lot of evangelicals aren't even aware there are Christians in these countries.

What happened to the top part of his head ![]()

Hypothetically speaking, would any of this have happened if Hussein was still in power?

I was in high school while the Iraq War was mostly happening, and I didn't pay much attention to it at the time. Now that I'm reading all your posts and other things, holy poo poo that was a disaster ![]()

On a related note, I'm going to guess that the Afghan War was just as botched as the Iraq one?

How has Tunisia been doing post-revolution? I've heard nothing about them, which I can suppose may be a good thing if it means things calmed down.

ISIS kind of looks stuck to me between Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. Where can they possibly expand next?

How (and I mean the method) were Shiite Iraqis being oppressed in a country where they formed their own majority? Like, who was carrying out the oppression?
![]() |
How about in Iran, do Sunnis get oppressed there?

I don't know much about the Kurds besides various posts on Imgur showing off their fighting women. Can someone summarize their position in the Middle East, what their goals are, and why we are or aren't helping them?
![]() |
Thanks for explaining the Kurds, everyone. I'm surprised at how many diverse groups they have. Are all of them unified against ISIS, or is there some in-fighting going on too?
![]() |
Is the structure of ISIS itself a single monolithic group, or are they a mixture of various terrorist groups that pledged allegiance to each other?

What's been up with the Syrian Civil War in general? All I ever hear about now is the conflict with ISIS, but what's been going on in western Syria? Have the rebels or government forces made any changes in the territory they control over the last year or so? Also, does ISIS attack both the rebels and Assad's forces?
![]() |
Nice! So ISIS is losing a load of territory now? Would be cool if someone made an animated map out of those images.

What happened to the US arming local rebel groups, is that still going on or has it not started yet? Also, how does it work? Is it like, "hey we're okay dudes, can you drop us a few crates of the good stuff?"

Has Israel been affected at all by this whole ISIS thing? Does ISIS regularly make broad statements about their destruction or whatever?
![]() |
Would a group of fanatics killing and oppressing other Muslims and calling them heretics be a catalyst for the desire of secular politics and national unity in the countries afflicted by ISIS?
![]() |
So assuming ISIS topples, what comes next?
![]() |
Who is even joining ISIS at this point, and why?
![]() |
How are there so many people out there willing to blow themselves up like that?
![]() |
That's really depressing regarding the suicide bombers and how they arise. By the way, what is ISIS trying to get out of having children kill captives in hostage execution videos?
![]() |
Is there more light in that northeastern corner in the "after" shot or am I just seeing things?
![]() |
What's stopping ISIS from expanding deep into Libya? Don't they have a highly dysfunctional government at the moment?
![]() |
Yeah, but didn't they already take control over some Libyan city already?

If he speaks English, is he self-aware about the irony of his name and position?

Would it be possible to explain the Shia/Sunni religious differences via analogies to Judeo-Christian traditions, or do they differ in entirely different ways?
![]() |
So is it sort of like an Orthodox/Catholic split early on, and then this radiates into a sort of ethnic-based Protestantism with all sorts of smaller religious groups that aren't devoted to a single central authority?
![]() |
So if that's the case, why do a lot of Western sources refer to Islam as if it's some monolithic block of "Them"?
![]() |
What's stopping ISIS from using every possible outlawed weapon during their attacks, like chemical and biological weapons? I see they're using chlorine now, but what's next?
![]() |
That's a relief, at least for the time being. By the way, who is even providing internet in ISIS-controlled areas? I remember reading an article about daily life in one of their cities, and someone complained about the internet access being intermittent, so it's obviously still available somehow. Satellite?

Can you imagine how much of a lovely job it would be to be IT for ISIS?

Is the merger of Boko Haram into ISIS going to change anything? Like, aren't they too far apart to easily transfer forces and weapons?

What's Russia's involvement in all of this? Isn't Putin basically blocking any attempts at US intervention because Russia has a base there?

What's the likelihood of an independent Kurdistan coming out of all these years of mess?

How did the US and Saudi Arabia end up so close together? Weren't they originally pretty isolationist?

I can't imagine Syria making it through this whole conflict either as an intact state with its present borders or with Assad still alive.
