Riven posted:I have a feeling this is not gonna be a super popular take but I stand by it. That works, but mainly because those two do have good chemistry. Then again, I'd watch anything that lets Tom Hiddleston be sarcastic in front of a camera.

Bettany is a good performer and gets the tenor of the character as written, but casting Maturin as an Englishman (and largely playing him as such) was missing the point a bit I think. Maturin is a combination of ethnic/class identities that was almost vanishing in “his” own time and now doesn’t really exist anymore. The movie already flattens his character more than Jack’s by excluding the shoreward aspects of the story, there’s no need to make him excessive anglo as well. Let’s get a grisly little foreign looking bastard, thanks not as miscast as Billy Boyd though. Still wonder about that one

Riven posted:I didn’t really like Crowe as Aubrey, haven’t heard Tull do the voice as I’m getting my audiobooks from my library and they’re all Vance and I very much dislike his voices for both Aubrey and Maturin. And I understand why people don’t like Bettany’s physicality but lord I cannot hear Maturin’s dialogue in anyone else’s voice. I really thought Crowe was perfect for Aubrey and Bettany likewise for Maturin. Crowe is a hefty boy and that's what I'm looking for in an Aubrey. For the amount of character development and the numerous characters, I think the movie would have been better as a miniseries. We had way too much time on board and too little on shore to get the full character development and the overall internecine struggles among all parties and the ongoing conflict between Aubrey and the admiralty. Also, there was no depiction in the films of how dangerous a man Maturin actually is, slitting throats and such, aside from a little saber combat if I remember correctly. Vance's reading has been pretty good. I enjoyed his attempt at a 19th century Baltimorean woman, distinctly southern, but I'll have to see if I can find any info on what the regional accent was at the time. His Aubrey-speaking-poo poo-French accent was perfect in the earlier novels. His French French pronunciation is rather hit or miss, with him consistently mispronouncing Desaix (pronouncing the final silent X), and another character named Leclerc (pronouncing the final silent C). I have no comment on him doing Turkish and Indian accents, I'm not sure what the acceptable practice would be here, but it was rough hearing him do an Indian woman. Vance's Aubrey and Maturin voices are distinct and clear and I have no complaints. His Aubrey voice is used for a number of other characters though and requires close listening. Edit: as a fluent French speaker, the few lines of French spoken by Vance were well enough delivered (aside from the above consistent faults) Mauser fucked around with this message at 01:34 on Dec 4, 2025 |

Spotify informs me that I am in the top 1% of Boccherini listeners this year. Thanks, Aubrey-Maturin.
