I've been considering starting a project akin to VNV Nation, Wolfsheim, Covenant, Seabound, etc. Does anyone have any advice where to start, and further, is this a bad thread to ask about this sort of thing?

What do you mean? You'd start by making music.

I mean like, what kind of equipment should I start with i.e. DAW or physical workstation, is there any kind of music theory I should know before getting into it and what are good channels to get exposure once I can start producing? Sorry if I'm being really dry or overly vague, it's just that I'm a complete and utter noob when it comes to production, and I've not the slightest idea how to start making music.

Edit:

I get the feeling these are not very good questions and I probably ought to resort to google.

Is it bad that I kind of like Pro-Test? I mean it's nowhere near their best track, but I couldn't help but like it in a sort of so bad it's good kind of way.

My favorite sub-subgenre is Anhalt EBM, which is basically dance music for skinheads. Not, like, Nazi skinheads, but like if you took Oi! fans and made the Oi! with computers instead of guitars. Like, TWAT could easily play with Angelic Upstarts.

I actually haven't heard of Anhalt EBM before, got any recommendations for good bands in this particular area?

All this talk of local industrial scenes growing and dying has made me realize that there really isn't one where I live. I'm in the maritime provinces of Canada, and as far as I've seen only myself and a close friend listen to industrial music in any meaningful capacity. I'm planning on moving somewhere else once I finish university to do a Master's degree, I was thinking Montreal, but I'm wondering how active the scene is there aside from Kinetik.

To be fair, you're in the MARITIMES.

A place where people wear hunting clothes to social events.

Touché, I do plan to leave at the earliest opportunity though, I just can't really decide where to.

So I recently started doing an industrial/goth show on my local campus radio station. I'm wondering if anyone would want to do an interview at some point or provide some music to play our anything.

I'd be happy to do either! If Ad.ver.sary or Antigen Shift fits your show and you dig it.

I've actually played tracks from Brotherhood on the last couple episodes, I only did my third this week and I've yet to get set up on the website with my podcasted version of it, but I should be getting in touch with the webmaster for the station tomorrow. As for the site for the station itself it's chsrfm.ca. It does have a link to listen online, and my show is Thursday nights at 10:30 pm Atlantic time, and I'm going to apologize in advance for the fact that I called it "Something to do With Bats", I couldn't think of anything better to name it.

First podcasted episode of my show is up here. It was my first time doing anything on the radio, so there are a lot of awkward "um" and "the next song iiiiiiiiis" bits where I couldn't get the cd or track to play fast enough to keep it smooth, so apologies for that, I think I'm slowly getting better but I only did my third episode this past Thursday. The next two episodes are scheduled be up at 3pm Atlantic time tomorrow and Wednesday. Also feel free to mock my occasional terrible choices of things to play.

Edit: Formatting.

I never got over that, really. I was not as committed to being professional as I could have been (very little pre-planning). Pro tip: EN's NNNAAAMMM gives you plenty of time to duck down that little staircase and into the washroom... unless they've remodelled SUBstantially since then.

Some days I miss CHSR ;_; (Even more days I miss getting to paw through so much new music to see if there's anything good.)

I'm hoping to do more planning for my halloween show this week, and I'll be keeping that about NNNAAAMMM in mind next time I find myself needing relief in the studio. Type O Negative's Black no.1 works well for that too.

The Halloween episode of my show is up here. I tried for more Witch House, I kind of figured that'd give a spookier vibe. Also, I hosed up and left the mic on during a couple songs, so if you hear my voice under some of the music, I'm deeply sorry about that.

The more I hear about the tour, the more bummed I get about being broke and living in NB.

Edit: On the plus side, I filled out the contact form on the Haujobb the other day about an interview, and from what their booker replied with, it's looking like I have an interview with them on my show after the tour's done.

So the concert in Montreal was pretty good. Youth Code loving destroyed the opening set. I hadn't realized haujobb would get a crowd going like that, which was awesome. FLA managed to get a pit going, though Jeremy shouted over Bill a lot. I unfortunately was too far from the stage when SP came on to make heads or tails of what was happening. Also I met up with twiin.

Some of the stuff in the first link reminds me of something I've been meaning to ask for a while - when I got into industrial, it was through the metal scene, coming in via Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, so a lot of mates were into Godflesh and extreme metal or whatever. A few years later, Rammstein and Marilyn Manson were the way some friends got into it. At peak futurepop and when electroclash was sort of a thing, I know a few folk who kinda came in via the techno end of things and at festivals I've met people who kinda ended up discovering more rhythmic noise stuff through dubstep/breakcore scenes.

How do newcomers to industrial (or whatever you want to call it) get into it these days? I don't mean this in any kind of pejorative "oh my god these young folk what are they like?!" way - it's genuine curiousity since most of my mates in the scene are a pretty similar age so I don't know where the entry points into all this are.

I personally got into industrial through punk and hardcore when I discovered Atari Teenage Riot.

Tacking on to the "how'd you get into industrial music" pre-holidays discussion, I'm actually a newcomer to industrial. I found my way to it kind of belatedly because although I love (prepare your ridicule) Rammstein and NIN, I had never really listened to anything but metal. Now a friend has rightfully introduced me to KMFDM and Ministry, and I feel like I missed a terribly important boat earlier in life. I feel like I have a cold, unfeeling buffet of music set out before me, and I have no idea what to try first.

If you want another good metal tinged gateway to industrial I'd try Frontline Assembly's Millennium, followed by tactical neural implant.

Hey, if anyone here remembers me at all, I brought my show back, but I broadened the format to focus on niche electronic music in general, because I'm a dweeb.
