Bigger steamers have been built, but this is the largest one in the world that is still operational.

Those yellow tanks hold 24,000 gallons of water each. Thirsty beast.

It's hard to convey just how huge this thing really is.

I also have a zoomed-in shot of just the smokestack and distorted Arch.

This is why I like steam - it's just neat to watch all the parts in motion.

Also, why do diesel locomotives only have 8 throttle notches? Why not 10? 16? Why even have notches and not just a back and forth lever between idle and loud?
There have been exceptions, though I don't think there are any still running now. UP's 8500HP turbines had a 20-notch throttle, if I remember right. That much power demands finer control.

Toucan Sam's victim-blaming posts weren't really helpful either. Most train victims are at fault, but there are exceptions.

Actual content:

I think this is the biggest MOW truck I've ever seen. The truck was pulling nine or ten hopper cars (with solar panels on the sides) and the crew were dumping new ballast on the track.

The turbines are long gone. Too bad, would have been neat to see those thunder along.

Every text I've read about these describes them as being extremely loud. The sound in this video is rather subdued by comparison.

About 2:30 in the previous video, plus new sound. Made me laugh when I saw it, and it's quite the contrast compared to the original narration.

The smashed car makes a surprisingly effective ballast spreader.

It turns out this is a GE ES44C4

It actually uses these cylinders to lift the middle traction motors to shift/force more weight onto the other traction motors so that they can "dig" harder into the rail for increased braking or power application between the engine and the rail.
There is no middle traction motor. The center axle on each truck is just an idler. I remember hearing that EMD was going to introduce a similar concept, except that instead of the center axle of each truck it was going to be the rear axle of the front truck and front axle of the rear truck.
