My first thought is like goalies are not subject to these kinds of rules because when you need one you need one. It would suck if you got a goalie last minute but had to forfeit because they never played for you before. But, when you read the regular tender was there on the bench watching? That's super lame. I don't know if I'd care enough to bring a sports lawyer into play though.

Our rule for goalies is they have to be approved to play at that skill level, then it doesn't matter how many games.

But having the regular goalie there is not cool. At least play up the ruse they were sick or busy or something and not have them show up.

The skate size thing is cool because I’m now 3 sizes below my shoe size but now they make wides in my child size skates, which previously I just sized up to get to in a regular width.

I love hockey but all of the poo poo I hear from everyone locally and this thread if I only had the option of league play I might just hang em up. I know most games are fine and no one talks about those whereas everyone talks about the absurd poo poo but man. Sports lawyers. Incredible.

Make great art.
Fight like hell.
Just got back from our matchup with the team I was worried about and holy cow it was a battle. We had 10 skaters so two full lines, while they came in with 14, and it was a hard 54-minute, buzzer to buzzer fight for every inch.

Our center won the opening faceoff, charged forward, and immediately scored. It would be the last goal of the game.

On the whole they had better stick handling but we were better skaters and so while they won battles on the boards, once the puck was in open ice we were racing from end to end. All of our skaters were exhausted by the middle of the second but we kept at it, and our goalie kept us in the game.

I was asked to play R Wing again which is probably my least comfortable position, and I only managed to get one shot on goal the entire game. It seemed like my line couldn’t put it on net—where I was often positioned for a rebound—even though we did a good job of keeping it in the offensive zone.

Next week we play on the local Olympic-sized rink and I’ll have some family in the audience so that’ll be an adventure on multiple fronts. With any luck I’ll be able to snag Left D and play where I’m more comfortable.

It’s nice to see the team cohesion develop even through just three games, and it makes me think that most of us are going to stay together as this mini-season winds down and the actual Summer League begins in May.

Onwards and upwards!

Edit: Also, last week’s game was at one of the local big boy rinks and it was awesome to play under the bright lights.

Showare is a fun place to play. I love the ice, the boards etc. gently caress if the puck gets lifted though. You lose it. The only lovely parts are it's far south, no beer in the building, and it's really hot.

Hell yeah dude good game report and sink rink, it'd be awesome to play in a place like that. Also sounds like the game was pretty clean which is nice with what you were concerned about going into it!

Welcome to the KAHL.

The ice at Showare is about the only nice part of it. We get to play on the Angel main ice as well, and that's a fun rink to play in too. OVA had really nice ice yesterday, so I'm hoping it lasts. They did some upgrading to some of the hvac, but it was still warm even with nice and hard ice. It has a good parking lot for setting up with snacks after if you get one of the afternoon times.

My team is 0-17 this season. I've been moved to defense lately and I finally don't hate it! I think its a combination of me having the ability to skate backwards, comfortably turn/stop at speed in both directions, being able to stick handle (which helps me not turn the puck over under pressure), being able to ring the puck around the boards with my backhand, and most(least) important is that I can now consistently hit the net hard and pretty accurately from the blue line with my wrister and clapper. Like we loving suck, but I'm having fun with it. I feel like I am playing really well every week now.
The issue is that I've gotten good enough for this D league that I feel like I should be able to drag us to a win, and if I don't get a goal or two that I'm letting the team down. I had so many chances that I just didn't score on. Shot just left of the net on a one timer while the goalie was posted up on the right side still. Shot just over the top right shelf from the left circle after I got the goalie to drop. Shot 5 different clappers from the blue line off of a face off either wide or into the center of the net with no rebound. Another 2 shots I remember shooting through a screen that just went center net and the goalie swallowed. It was frustrating because I should be able to score that and now I want to go shot 1000 pucks.
On the other hand they only scored once when I was on the ice, and it was a penalty kill, and I had forced the guy who scored super wide and our other defenseman behind me followed me for some reason and left a big hole and he scored near post because the goalie wasn't posted up. Also the net was off so it wasn't really her fault and the refs wouldn't blow it dead despite the net being off for a solid 90 seconds. Oh well.

I hate playing at Showare and AotW main ice only because my combined record at those rinks is like 1 - 21. I genuinely can't recall the last time I played a winning game at either rink.

We got a first round bye for playoffs due to finishing first which is a blessing because we lost two players in our final game to shoulder injuries (one of which is our goalie, yay) but we also only finished first cause we spent the first half of the season in a lower division feeding on teams there before getting bumped up so things are going to be interesting to say the least.

My local rink is digging out and re-doing one of their sheets over the next couple months. Besides completely loving the schedule up for every league since we only have one sheet available, it's actually pretty cool seeing them in there with heavy equipment ripping everything out and digging out a gigantic pit of dirt. It currently looks like they're setting up for Monster Jam or something. Pretty neat to watch.

Also, my True custom skates were shipped from Canada last week and got stuck in customs purgatory. Fedex said there was a customs delay and just sat there for a few days with no updates. Finally I googled it and a few people on Reddit said I needed to email a CBP 5106 customs form to Fedex, and they send it over to customs. I did that yesterday and my skates were released a couple hours ago. Kind of annoying that Fedex didn't try contacting me or giving me more info like "hey fill out this form" on the tracking page. Supposed to arrive tomorrow :hellyeah:

Man, Seattle just struggles to keep rinks cold. We played at ova last week and the south east corner never froze. I showed up early by mistake and it didn't look like there was anybody before us either. The rink was empty so it had time to freeze and dry but it just couldn't.

I like the WHL rinks, the ice and boards are usually great but they're hot as balls and ban adult drinks.

It looks like they've installed some insulation on the hvac this week up above (wrapped at least). I know they sent the figure skaters over to LIC for this week to do some work, so this must be part of it. Time will tell how long it lasts, but it was nicer ice last night than OVA has in the middle of winter when it's freezing outside. I stepped on and was really impressed with how nice my edges could grip without sinking into anything. The air temp was still warm, but the ice itself was not soupy at all and was freezing before he finished the pass.

Now if they would only fix the rink doors so they stayed closed with kids running around. Or just fixed the front door.

Got my True Custom SVH skates yesterday and as everyone else reports, holllllllly poo poo are these stiff as hell. I literally couldn't get my foot into them without baking them. I tried for a solid 30 mins without success lol. I watched all of their baking/fit/putting them on/whatever videos, but man these are tough to get on.
Even after baking, I had to take the laces out and heatgun the upper 4-5 eyelets and kind of roll them outward just to have a chance of putting them on.

I've only had them on for 15 minutes while baking, but they feel so much better than my S29 Supremes. I was going to do a stick time today to give them a shot, but I got asked to sub for an upper league game tonight. I'm going to have to show up like 20 mins earlier than I usually do just to figure out how to get them on and hope I don't eat poo poo in warmups. Definitely going to bring my old skates as a backup just in case.

Hell yeah dude. That stiffness sounds wild though, are they expected to soften up as the break in?

My new skates also arrived, got them all baked up and pretty stoked to skate in them tomorrow. They fit much much more snug through the whole foot than my old ones, especially around the forefoot and met heads. Pretty hyped to see how much of a difference it makes but not looking forward to breaking them in, fingers crossed they don't kill my feet too bad. I'm also planning on keeping my old skates in my bag for a couple of skates just in case I need them.

I'm assuming stock CCM blades are a standard 10' radius? Not planning on messing with it but curious what a generic/stock profile is vs the fancy options.

Are they the Step steel blades? I found them kind of flat but I actually like the profile a lot.

Jhet

Stock profile tends to be 10’. Just remember that the steel is taller and be prepared to blame the skates when you eat it because you’re not used to how tall they are. Only takes a couple minutes to adjust, but it’s funny how different it can be.

I’d skip the entry level CCM pants. I had a pair wear out in 6 months. I have a pair of Warriors pro overstock and it’s going to take years to destroy these.

Yeah after spending basically my whole life skating on 9' radius it did take me a few skates to adjust to the stock 10' radius blades that most skates have now. But after a few times skating on them it was fine.

I absolutely could not get used to the 10' (or the new bauer quad) radius that comes with modern bauer skates.

My 10 year old vapors were on steel that was so low it couldn't be sharpened any longer and the steel was pre-trigger so its hard to find in my size. The boots were pretty trashed so I bought new-used skates from the kraken pro gear sale. They were practically new (coach skates) and came with the taller bauer steel. They felt way too flat. Going from steel that had 10 years of skating on them, likely an 8-9' radius by this point, to something that was now 10' felt like I was on rails, in a bad way. I couldn't turn quickly and stopping took a ton of effort. I was toe picking and heel picking a lot. The height wasn't the problem, but the radius was.

I bought a second set of steel to have a backup, Tydans (tall steel), and the profile looked a lot more like my old skates. I'm guessing they are 9' or possibly a dual radius because the front is more ground than the back but I'm no longer toe or heel picking and they feel very similar to my old skates and the much-sharpened steel. I have the same agility and glide, it doesn't take effort to turn or stop and I'm no longer heel/toe picking.

I noticed the height difference, but it wasn't an issue for me. Its obvious when I turn but it puts more torque on your feet/ankle but its only noticeable at slower speeds/stops when your foot leans over the centerline. I no longer strike my boot on the ice which is great and I feel like I can get into a deep turn without worrying about boot strike.

I had heard about that and measured my new vs old skates, and heights from the ground to the bottom of the boot are super similar in the heel and ball with the skate balanced on the middle of the blade. My old skates are real old, but they're a goalie friend's old player skates so they were very lightly used. I'm not gonna pull the blades and compare profiles, but they look similar on the eyeball test. Biggest difference is the overall length of the blades from going down 2 sizes, close to an inch measuring from tip to tail. I'm real hyped to skate tomorrow after missing my usual lunch skate on Tuesdays. I did get a tour of the warrior ice arena which was pretty cool after some of the discussion on rinks recently, they talked a lot about what goes into keeping the ice nice, how they manage and measure cuts to clean up the surface but maintain the right thickness and how it much it differs between post birthday parties and post Bruins practice skate. I also learned I can skate there for free/cheap and was kicking myself for not throwing my bag in the car, they had a couple public skates/stick times that worked for me that afternoon.

How many skates did you give it on the 10' radius? For me I definitely felt a little uncomfortable at first but after 4-5 skates I was fully used to it and felt like I was doing the same things I was used to doing on the 9' radius.

It definitely took some getting used to and now I wonder how I would feel if I went back to the old LS2 9' radius blades. Maybe they would feel weird now.

I played at least a half season, 11 games, with my primary team and then probably equal that subbing on my other two teams, so likely 20 games. It never worked for me. The moment I put my new steel on, it was back to my regular skating almost immediately.

I could not get used to them at all. I could skate and play but I just felt like I couldn't do what I needed when I needed to do it. It kind of felt like playing roller hockey for the first time figuring out how to turn and stop etc. I ran into the boards once transitioning out of the zone with speed and sprained my wrist because I simply couldn't make the turn sharp enough. The only thing I can compare it to was borrowing my in-laws' skates which were two sizes too big for me and they felt like I was skating in goalie skates they were so flat.

I will have to take a photo of my steel for comparison. It's pretty crazy.

A part of me wonders how much me getting used to them is just the blades getting shorter from use/sharpenings lol. But I get you - I'm pretty anal about my skates. It's the only piece of equipment I'm like that with. I'm actually surprised I got used to the new radius at all.

I'm hoping my current pair lasts a while. My last two pairs of vapors died in various ways - the first pair had the skate holder eventually break, and the second had the boot start coming off near the toe. I hate getting new skates.

Spent 2 hours trying to get the True skates on yesterday afternoon until a combination of heatgunning the eyelet cuffs and rolling them outward and finding the exact proper angle and twist of my foot finally worked. I brought my old skates to my game last night just in case though, but was able to get them on fairly quickly. Between having way more steel, and a different profile radius, they felt wayyyy different than my Supremes, but wow, they were incredibly comfy. I don't think I've played a game where I can't wait to get my skates off afterwards. My dead legs aside, my feet feel like they could have skated another game without any issue. The foam inside these is so much more comfortable than anything other skate I've ever worn.

I'm currently baking them again to try to get the toebox just a bit more narrow by cranking the bottom couple eye lets down a bit tighter. Besides that, they fit and feel amazing.

Hell yeah dude that sounds real nice.

I got two hours in my new skates today and wow I'm blown away, turns out being in skates two sizes too big DOES make a huge difference. Edge control, balance, edge transitions, pivots, stops, weird off angle slides all felt effortless and instantaneous compared to my old skates. Inside edge stops, single foot glides to stops, and big long distance shaving stops all feel better on my bad side than they used to on my good side. It feels like the blades under my heels aren't touching the ice and like it's easy to fall back, but playing around with it they're super stable engaging the heel edge on tight turns and pushing through crossovers/shuffles and stuff.

A bit of foot cramping in the arch from a tighter fit, and some rubbing irritation under the ankle bones on the inside at the end of a long skate but otherwise super comfortable for first time out of the box. I got some waxed laces for them and it seems like one of the laces got all the wax meant for both, one is real stiff and sheds wax as it goes through eyelets and the other feels a little too soft but still holds nicely enough.

I also bought some baby cones off of Amazon for running drill and drat they're nice to have. Having a bunch of cones sorta in a line plus some scattered everywhere was awesome for skating and stick handling through, like skating on one side of the line and handling on the other, handling back and forth through the cones, slaloming with and against the puck through cones, setting up some tight cones and doing little dekes or puck protects through, super helpful for working on the hands and how hands and feet interact.

Very stoked on skating and hockey today, I love playing games and scrimmages but there's something so engaging about being on skates and moving the puck around on the ice I feel like I could do it forever and not get bored.
