We have Drive to Survive at home
I signed up to play Monday. First time since COVID and first time since getting my hip replaced in November. Should be interesting. They are requiring masks everywhere but on ice, no showers, 50% locker room capacity and no contact hockey. I guess I'll see how "no contact" these guys are playing but I figure a keep your distance kind of hockey is probably the best way to get back into it after a hip replacement. It's not like we played full check or something before but it's hard to play D without being able to put your hands on somebody somewhat so there was always some pushing/shoulder rubbing here and there.

If the other teams goalie goes to the corner to handle the puck, rush to his crease and tell him he can’t come back in as he has to social distance, then your team can hopefully shoot the puck past you without hitting you and score. Easy win.

I'm not going to be able to play hockey for the foreseeable future because I live in South Carolina and we are doing so poorly with our COVID response that it's going to be until next year before it's remotely safe to go to a rink.

That sucks about the refunds, although at least the players are getting something back. Our rink has a strictly FYGM policy.

"So even though I'm a nurse, and all I do is work with covid patients, and I'm keeping myself out of play out of concern for everyone's safety, you still won't refund me and give some other fool my spot?"

At this point I'm not sure I'm even going to bother with a USA hockey membership or do my level 3 coaching poo poo. Goddammit.

I skated yesterday for the first time. we did two v two with four pretty good skaters which is not exactly a recipe for not being unbelievably gassed and tired for the next 18 hours after you play.

The most bizarre thing about all of this was seeing an absolutely sparkling immaculately clean ice hockey rink including the locker rooms. that is something I have never seen before and will likely never see again

The world is a fine place and worth the fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.
We got refunded for the cancelled summer season but it was paid in Canadian dollars and the dollar weakened against the Canadian dollar in the past four months so I lost five dollars

I never paid for the summer season (was going to take the season off) but I have a credit for the two playoff games we were going to get. Hopefully that doesn't have an expiration date.

And hopefully I get to play hockey again someday. I'm looking at you, Moderna.

ASK ME ABOUT STICKING WITH A YEARS-LONG LETS PLAY OF THE MOST COMPLICATED SPACE SIMULATION GAME INVENTED, PLAYING BOTH SIDES, AND SPENDING HOURS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND TO ENSURE INTERNET STRANGERS ENJOY THEMSELVES
Tron is having a clearance sale on their in-house composite sticks that lasts until tomorrow. 50% off or more. I've been using their sticks pretty much the entire time I've been playing, only buying them when they're on sale (usually at a 30% discount or so). The durability leaves something to be desired (average lifespan across all of them was about a year, which is about 80 games for me) but I also tend to break my sticks more frequently than anyone else I play with. Other than that, they seem on par with the mid-tier sticks of the name brands.

I'm not even playing right now but I just bought two just to have them once I start back up.

Unfortunately I live in a hockey-scarce place so even in a huge city there are only 5 rinks. Counting mine, there's one or two others I'd be willing to go to, but they're perpetually full and the others are in the murdery part of town, so eating the ban could potentially really suck.

Third time is a charm right?
Surprised I didn't see this in here yet. Guess I'm a Krakhead now.

As a hockey player, fan, and also a professional graphic designer I hated the Kraken name this whole time and really wanted it to be something else but it was going to come down to execution for me. I like the look so far. I kind of wish the lightest blues had a bit more green considering seattle is the emerald city. Something a little more seafoamy. The red stripe is nice but its almost too thin and will likely not even be noticeable on tv. I have to say I really like the space needle in the anchor. Its a nice subtle touch, same with the tentacle in the S. Its slick and I'll definitely wear it.

The crest is decent (better than Vegas') but it feels very "safe" and went through so many committees it lost whatever character the original sketches might have had.

I really like the jersey pattern and colors, green would have been cool but blue is fine.

I dig the colours a lot, and the anchor with the needle is awesome.

Really not wild on the "S" though. It's too subtle for my taste. Throw out some wild poo poo.

If they don't use an Islanders style Gordon's fisherman as their mascot I'll be pissed. I actually loved that Islanders logo.

They did say the Jersey could still change and the brand will evolve over time to expose more of the creature which I thought was neat and opens up more merchandise opportunities with a systematic logo evolution. I will also be very interested to see the alternate jersey if/when that comes. I love the anchor, would like to see an anchor with the tentacle surrounding it.

If anybody is into tentacle porn, climate pledge arena the krak house will be a difficult place to watch a game.

I'm 38 and have been playing hockey now for over 30 years so you'd think there isn't much left "new" for me to experience, but

Today no one but me showed up for stick time, so I got the ice to myself for 2 hours for $11, which, beat that deal, anybody. I usually leave my phone in my car, but I brought it in today, and so decided to video myself skating some, as I've only seen myself play like half a dozen times ever. Turns out my phone has SLO MO mode, which means, for the first time, I got to watch myself do stuff in SLO MO.

Then the rink guy comes out and asks if I want to play with the radar gun thingie, which I haven't gotten to do since I was like 16. It was actually really, really neat...I was able to watch myself shooting and see what made stuff go faster. Turns out, in my old age, I skate in less of a crouch these days, and so I wasn't getting my bottom hand down far enough on the stick to optimize the flex on my snappers. By just getting my hand down where it was supposed to be, I added about 5 mph! God bless technology. The slo mo crash of my shots going way over the net as they crash into the glass has been cracking me up.

My wife put together a Rocky montage of me skating, to include me almost blowing a tire. I think my hardest clapper is the last clip, and the hardest snapper is at 3:10 or so. Big money to anyone who guesses how fast I can shoot! (I did not know the answer to this prior to around noon today)

The video is obviously not a skating skills demonstration but I could point out a dozen dudes in my league that have your exact posture and shot quality.

IT WAS THE CROSSBAR

i actually hit 91 with my slapshot (most were upper 80s) which was a bit faster than the last time it was clocked. I guess an extra 50 lbs of "muscle" has at least one benefit. i hit 65 with my snapper, although I was definitely cheesing for speed and not really aiming it.

Any other hockey dads here to commiserate with? Signups for my son start Monday, and I'm digging for a reason to make it okay that he go back, but drat. If my kid gets COVID from playing I'll never forgive myself. Plus I'll probably get it from him and die.

I do not envy people with kids in sports right now, because you know there’s a lot of people who think their kids the best Crosby who would be very upset if their kid wasn’t always getting ice time no matter how risky it is for them to play.

My rink was supposed to open end of the month. They close June through August as the rink is used for the state fair. We get really nice fresh ice for about a week before it goes to poo poo. They haven't sent any emails but from what I've heard they have pushed opening back till at least the end of September. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not till next year. Which is good because some of my teammates think this is just the flu.
