Can anyone here tell me about playing hockey in the Bay area? I'm moving to Mountain View next month and I'd really like to get back into it. Also what's the availability of gear like, I think I'm going to get rid of everything I have before I move...

Question - anybody know if there's a decent store to buy gear in San Francisco (or the Bay Area in general)?

gently caress, I'd forgotten how fun hockey is. Randomly joined a bottom-level team in Oakland and played my first game in 4 years last weekend. Had to buy all my equipment the day before the game which was, uh, an ordeal and still managed to open the scoring Also the league I'm in posts game sheets online and it is practically a childhood dream come true. Also also - I've played hockey in a handful of arenas in Canada and the best surface I've been on has been in California, kinda shameful. Edit - Oh, and the equipment guide came in super handy, thanks bewbies. mr. unhsib fucked around with this message at 06:08 on Sep 11, 2014 |

I played last weekend at Oakland Ice Center. I've previously played at a handful of arenas in Montreal and suburban Vancouver which ranged in quality from lovely (McConnell arena at McGill) to okay. Oh and Yerba Buena in SF, which is godawful. quote:Makes me think of when I asked someone how they got so good at skating. "Do it with pads," they said, "you'll be too busy to think about it and the skating will take care of itself." What does this mean, exactly? Do what with pads?

In our first game of the season, we beat a team 3-1, dominating them fairly comprehensively. We faced them again in the second game of the season, they got 2 of their best players back, and we got outshot 31-5. Incredible what a difference they made. Game ended 0-0 though because our goalie is loving awesome.

What are peoples' thoughts on wax laces? I've been thinking of buying longer laces because I want to start doing a wrap or two around my ankles and I've heard a lot of hype about them. What's so great about them?

But I can't order those on Amazon

There's only one weekly Bronze/Silver drop-in Tuesday nights and an all-skill pickup in the middle of the Friday work day. No stick time during league season (Fall/Spring), so my options are to make the drop-in or wait until February. Ooof this is rough. If you're actually willing to drive for over an hour, there's drop in hockey at Yerba Buena in SF at 11pm most Friday nights. There are alway spots available.

So I've always been way less confident on my left skate than my right. I thought it was because I was a pretty terrible skater (and you know, I am) but it ALSO turns out that my left skate has been bent slightly and that's been loving me up. Got that fixed and it's made a WORLD of difference. So my advice to you if you're way more confident on one foot than the other is, make sure your skates aren't hosed. (Also never buy skates from Hockey X in Oakland)

You may have to re-bake.

Does anyone have this problem where the straps of your elbow pads cling to the jersey as you put it on, and they get loose/undone while in the sleeve? It's annoying as gently caress

Played in an all-night Iron Man tournament in Oakland. Games were 20 minute running clock 3-vs-3s played width-wise from the blue-line in, and all penalties were penalty shots, taken at the end of the game. Came first in the round robin, only losing once in a shootout. Then in the playoffs, we tied the team that beat us in the round robin, but took a penalty, and they scored on their shot. :/ Kinda frustrating, but fun as hell. They happen every few months, if anyone in the Bay Area is interested Plus, you will NEVER get that much ice-time in a 9-hour period in your LIFE

So...what do you do if your skates hurt after ~5 minutes or so after skating? I lace up my skates, everything feels good, my ankle is firmly in place. Then after skating for a few minutes I get this dull, throbbing pain in my feet. At first I thought I just hadn't broken them in enough but it's been 3 months playing hockey 1-2 times a week. It doesn't really make a difference in games, since taking the weight off when I sit at the bench eases things, punched the skates out a bit but that didn't really do anything.

Yeah 56 was another ringer level guy who just toyed with us. He wasn't too whiny against us though, but we had a couple buddies on that team so the overall vibe of that game was very chill and nobody really chirped. Yeah, we were only down 3-1 heading into the 3rd but then they just lit us up The Gang Green guy definitely played down to this level. He scored once against us, and set up a few more. He nearly tied the game on a breakaway with < 5 seconds left but our dman pitchforked him and the game ended with their entire bench screaming for a penalty shot (we'd scored on one earlier). A bunch of us stayed at the Fairmont San Jose for the tourney, which is right next to Four Points. We ran into a bunch of guys from your team at a restaurant nearby before the Saturday night game. That older guy on your team was great, he had all these tricky little moves. drat hard to contain - he play in college or anything?

So I joined up for a memorial day tournament in SF, in a 4-team beginner's tier. Our team was kind of ad-hoc, put together last minute with no one knowing each other. We've lost our 3 games 8-5, 14-1, and 10-0...at this point the tournament organizer got pissed off and kicked the two ringer teams into the playoffs up a division and we get to play the team that beat us 8-5 for the "beginners championship" in a few hours Ah, rec hockey.

Our rec league always has a "pre-season" game that isn't reflected in the standings and this winter they had the option of a pre-season game or the administrator running a practice for 75 minutes, and we chose that option and basically did an hour of breakout drills as a team. Played our first real game last night and holy poo poo what a difference it made! We never once got pinned in our own zone, and everyone had a place to be defending, and we could shout at players who *were* out position telling them where to go. Only won 2-0 but it was so satisfying to play sound positional hockey, probably the most fun I've had in a game. So yeah! Learn to break out. 5 guys moving in transition properly is a great thing to be a part of.

This guy dropped in on a pick-up game I was playing once, and just completely dominated everybody, including a couple of college players that were there. http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=76422 There is nobody in this thread who is anywhere near the skill level of any ECHLer.

I'm about to play in my first outdoor tournament. Any outdoor-specific advice? Or do you just wear the same gear and things are more or less the same? If you're like, over 30 and want to play hockey a bunch a foam roller is a loving godsend. Especially if you work in front of a computer for a living and have garbage hip flexors.

Played in (and won) an outdoor tourney at Mt Shasta (on the California/Oregon border). Teams were decided by literally putting sticks in piles. 8 person teams, 4-on-4, 28 minutes games, penalties were given as penalty shots at the end of regulation. Play hockey outdoors, kids.
