IIRC you can get it a lot easier in Japan but the penalties are insanely harsh (same with Sweden I guess)

Not sure how Inter Arma is viewed in this thread. Disclaimer, I really dig their brand of sludge and Sulpher English was in my 2019 top ten list for sure. For better or for worse, looks like we get to hear them cover Purple loving Rain in July, along with some other choice tracks.

Their cover of "Southern Man" linked below.

Sugartime Jones

I've seen them twice and I'd say they're pretty great live. I'd see them again in a heartbeat. Their drummer is amazing and an absolute animal live.

First time I saw them they shared a bill with Windhand and Indian and out of those, Windhand was by far the worst live.

Great live show, and they have koozies with their name inside the classic Outkast crown logo and who doesnt love that

Speaking of merch, I was thinking about buying an SDS hoodie but didn't really have anything in mind. Went to check out All That Is Heavy and there is some weird drama going on with that company now. Any other recs for similar sites or is it better to just browse on a band by band basis? Not a huge hoodie guy so I don't know the game

Insane live show. I saw them play for 45 minutes or so and they basically played one long song. It was mesmerizing.

Inter Arma rules. They're one of those bands that I have to see whenever they come around. Really good live, and yeah, TJ Childers is an amazing drummer. The Southern Man cover rips and I'm excited about that release.

Jumping back to Bongripper for a second, the name started out as a joke. Their first album was made with intention of making it longer than Dopesmoker, and they joked about calling it Bongripper as a reference to that. I also read in an article that they said one day at practice their drummer's double bass pedal broke, so they decided to play doom after that.

Bonus TJ Childers story: One time when I saw them, the venue must not have had changing rooms or whatever for the bands, so he changed into his drumming shorts on stage, and I saw his butt. Thank you for listening to my story.

Would anyone know any stoner or doom bands that are keyboard or organ based?

I know there's a whole bunch of psychedelic bands, but I'm thinking more of a Sabbath or Sleep sound.

Or is it impossible to play doom on an organ without sounding like Iron Butterfly?

For a genre which is often synonymous with being stoned, Lost Hours show that you donít have to be influenced by drugs to create a killer doom record and this reviewer for one hopes for a lot more straight edge doom in the future.

i'm the genius who only recently figured to change lyrical themes to "instrumental" in Encyclopaedia Metallum's search function and have been digging a lot of the post-metal/doom/sludge results, namely Cegvera, Cult of the Lost Cause, Mairu, and Olde Rasputin.

also been getting down with Navajo Witch, but they have rad lyrics about skinwalkers and witches and poo poo.

I pre-ordered the orange neon vinyl like a goddamn idiot, knowing full well that my wife and 12 year old daughter are NOT cool with sludgey doom with those gloriously harsh vocals. Oh well. One day this will be over and they will leave the house and I can get baked and listen to my doom like the metal dad I dream to be.

Yeah, I was thinking of combo organs. I bought myself an Arturia Minilab to dick about on recently and I've been obsessed by the Vox Continental simulation in Analog lab - it has some pretty crunchy noises. I'm thinking that the issue with keyboards and metal is you can't quite get the rhythms a guitar is capable of - you can't really chug.

Artic Brother on that album is kinda getting close to what I'm after.

There seems to be a bunch of these occult-y psychedelic bands with female vocals at the moment. Not complaining, mind.

That's a pretty apt description - not the sound I was thinking of, but enjoyed their KEXP performances. The doubled vocals are awesome.

If you find some more heavy keyboard stuff make sure to post it. Iím sure some cool doomy stuff could be made with keyboards and little to no guitar.

Some of Paul Chain's later work reduced the emphasis on guitars and focused a lot more on keyboards, although I'm not really a huge fan of that stuff when the traditional doom material is so good. Like, compare this to this

I feel like a pipe organ is a pretty doom instrument. If you've ever heard a big one being played by someone who means you'll know it's an impressive amount of noise with an incredible range of timbre. Unfortunately most of them are solidly attached to churches and not so great for touring.

Interestingly, the Tocatta and Fugue that the kid is playing there (that's only the Tocatta bit) is pretty much 4 minutes of shredding, followed by 5 minutes exploring a riff - arguably the 17th century equivalent of stoner metal.
