I saw The Sword and Rickshaw Billie’s Burger Patrol on Monday. Man I’ve fuckin missed going to The Sword shows. Glad they’re back together! RBBP is a hoot live and I very much recommend catching them if you get the chance.

I would not pay to see them but they are a hoot and a great opener hype band. The drummer is mesmerizing. I really hope to catch the Sword sometime. I only got to see them once before they put out those couple albums that weren't much good and then hiatused.

I went to their show in STL and the Burger Patrol was the highlight of the night for me. Met the drummer at the merch stand. I didn't even stay for the whole The Sword set, mostly because I'm old and fat but also kinda because The Sword.

I heard the one new song they put out earlier in the year (late last year?) as a fund raiser after hurricane Helene but didn't realize they had an actual honest to God album coming out. Ordered the vinyl immediately; thanks for mentioning this!

Almost saw Sunn O))) but chickened out from buying Tix because it was a 2 hour drive to a town I don't know and didn't want to risk my driving back somehow being affected mentally by sound bathing. I dunno, sounds silly in retrospect, but I also wanted to hear some of their actual songs like Etna or It Took the Night to Believe, and not just 2 dudes noodling on their guitars for "ambience", which was what their Shoshin Duo concerts were mostly to be (they released some live recordings of Shoshin Duo stuff, and that's exactly what it was). They even had Jessica Sykes and her band opening, not sure if they played Sinking Bell, tho. So instead I later bought their BBC live show on Vinyl

I think you need to go in with the same expectation that you do the music. Its not gonna be a particularly exciting or stimulating show, but neither is the music. But as a big fan I really enjoy seeing them and getting to hear their sounds irl are awesome. I can totally get why its not someomes cup of tea though.

This album just came out, and it's pretty drat good instrumental stoner/heavy psych. It's got some old-school stoner riffs, some trippier sections, some kraut-inspired stuff here and there. Well worth a listen, imho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTsgW0ut278 Bandcamp link

I saw Pelican live once and it was boring as poo poo, just the CD but louder. Sunn 0))) is a totally different thing, it's not even really like a band or songs, it's a sensory experience.

Russian Circles were completely boring live too. The Sword also had zero stage presence when I saw them

I basically never listen to Sunn O))) on record, but they're the only band I'd give a pass on calling their live shows "rituals". I've not been to anything else like them.

Sunn at least do the fun mysticism/fog machine/robes stuff. Earth live is glacial with much less volume so no sound bath, no real show, and having to listen to Dylan's dry rear end voice talk at a speed that makes the music seem fast. And I say that as someone whose bought every single Earth release and always will, probably my favorite band in this genre, but I was p dissapointed by the live show.
|
|
|

it sucks that that's been your experience. I think I've seen Earth live three times now and enjoyed them. The records suggest that Adrienne Davies is a good drummer, but watching how they move and cue live puts them on a whole other level. Hell, around Bees Made Honey, they toured with a cellist - the stuff they play live won't sound exactly like it does on the albums both because they're playing with the material more but also because it's straight up not arranged the same way. Also worth noting here: Dylan Carlson has epilepsy, so they were never gonna have the intricate lighting poo poo that some bands go for.

My problems werent with the lack of fancy lighting or anything and more (and this is bc im a tube rolling audio nerd) dissapointed in the actual tones of the live setup. I saw them twice in different venues and was pretty let down each time, though I do acknowledge sound can sometimes be beyond the bands control. Sunn to me is the opposite where the tones they put out live are somehow new and even better than the albums and the sheer VOLUME hits much harder. I do agree about Adrienne as a drummer though. She truly is one of the more impressive drummers in the scene imo. Im mostly a strings player but I dabble in drums and trying to play along to her work in Earth is nearly impossible. Playing that slowly is so incredibly loving difficult and the two shows I went to she just nailed every single note. I really like her use of empty space too. A lot of SDS bands let the cymbals ring or leave a hi hat open to ring, which are certainly tools in her repetoire, but shes really unafraid to just leave some "dead air" on drums in an incredibly musical way and I think thats much more difficult to actually pull off than it seems. I adore Earth and Dylan and while I was def dissapointed when I saw them I also appreciate touring is rough and my opinions re: shows are def more sound than show focus.

Sunn albums are boring as poo poo but I'll pay for a ticket the second they announce a show here. Speaking of shows, YOB are coming back to Aus in Feb. can't bloody wait for that. It's been 10 years since their last show here. Hopefully this gets sells out and some other bands that are long overdue for a return take notice. I'd kill to see monolord, sleep, windhand and HoF again.
