I was so bummed out when he died. I remember hearing I Don't Wanna be Me when I was 12 and LOVING it so much. I didn't really have much access to music back then and it made a huge impact on my taste. I still absolutely love the sound of their stuff.

I liked their split with cough when I heard it, and I bought soma, but it rarely gets play. I saw them live in early 2015 or so and I was bored. By the time griefs eternal flower came out I was over it, I haven't listened to eternal return.

That's my windhand post, I hope it doesn't trigger anyone.

Eternal return is a bit more upbeat and weirder so might be worth a stream to see if it adds anything. Reasonable departure from their usual sound.

Just chiming in to say that I love Type O Negative and Peter Steele. I used to listen to a local radio station when I was like 13-14 in 1994 or so, this show called "The Mosh Pit" would be on from, say, 2 AM to 5 AM. I would listen to it and tape songs (on CASSETTE) which I liked or requested (on the LANDLINE PHONE), so the first one I heard was "We Hate Everyone" which I fell in love with, mainly because of the slower middle breakdown part. Their poo poo was so tongue-in-cheek and sardonic, and it was obvious that Pete was just being contrary and edgy in interviews and lyrics and such. I mean, yeah, today it's cringey but I loved reading the front page of SA in 2001, and the monkey cheese humor in the forums was a blast. Looking back at any post from then is awkward as gently caress.

I feel like Pete would have changed with the times and kept making killer romantic doom/goth music, maybe doing a more croon-y side project or something. Some of the edgelord imagery notwithstanding, by all accounts the guy was a sweet fellow at heart.

Nostalgic follow-up about that radio show: I used to listen to it and be a zombie the next day at school because I got 0-2 hours of sleep, but it was worth it. Through that show I discovered Korn when their first album came out in 94, when they were refreshing and heavy; I heard "Ball Tongue" and I thought they were like an odd Japanese band. I also discovered Acid Bath, which would make it worth it just by itself, Morbid Angel, Amorphis, also weirder stuff like Anal oval office, Brujeria, Gwar, and X-Cops. And TON of course.

Sounds like good times to me, I remember taping songs off the radio myself, though that was like 98. Classic

I would argue that they have both in spades, its just that the atmosphere was the same for like 3 whole albums and a lot of songs were structured pretty samey.

Eternal return is a bit of a shake up of their formula - I actually dont really like it as much as their older releases, but seems to catch a few peoples interests that otherwise didnt enjoy them previously. its a bit more grungy, i think.

I was living in nyc then and was into the hardcore and metal scenes they came out of in the late 80s. I’ve never seen anything of theirs I would have called funny even then. That era spawned some very bad music in NY and type o negative was definitely part of that imo. I know they’re getting a lot of love these days but I never got the appeal.

Carnivore was also douche music but at least sound cool.

Carnivore rules and the self titled is probably one of the coolest metal albums ever recorded.

This time they got lead singer from Windhand on vocals covering a Type O-Negative track. I like Windhand (although, enjoy them more live than on album) but never into Type-O Negative. They get mentioned here though?

I loved Type O, but I totally get why they're divisive. Leaning into the whole goth thing was a prolonged joke (and presumably an easy way to get more girls at their shows than a hardcore band who sings about killing cheating girlfriends), and even the 'serious' albums are full of dark humor. Their songs are really fun to play on bass too. I met them all once after a show, and they were all very cool and really appreciated their fans. Kenny was sick so he couldn't talk for long, but still made an effort anyway. I talked to Josh about his Moog, had a beer with Johnny, and Peter was a real sweet guy and just as self-deprecating IRL. And he was HUGE. He towered over everyone.

What led to Pete Steele's death was pretty sad too. Late in the band's career they were contracted by WWE to write new entrance music for the wrestler Kane. It would've really given them a ton of mainstream exposure, and they worked hard on it and were really proud of it. But at the last moment WWE pulled out and gave the song to Finger Eleven instead, and didn't even tell them at first. Apparently the deal falling through drove Pete Steele into a deep depression and he started abusing substances again. He got clean in his later years, but the damage to his body was already done. There's a pretty long list of lives Vince McMahon has ruined, but that one really pissed me off.

I believe they're talking about Type O leaning hard into the goth tendencies for Bloody Kisses after the mostly hardcore/doom Slow Deep and Hard, where the whole album was about killing your ex-lover, her lover, and yourself

Yeah, I was talking about early Type O. There are a scant few sections of SD&H where it seems like Peter JUST realized he could actually sing instead of shout, and they ran with it after that.
