Anyone hear this new tune that Phil sings on? It's a bit more "metal" than "doom" (I don't post in the metal thread) but I think his voice hasn't sounded as cool and bluesy since NOLA/Down II with all those harmonies and poo poo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FgFGODoXXbY

I hate that it wasn't until the late 90's that I got into sludge, but that NOLA sound was just amazing. I already mentioned them, but there are two bands that I can always listen to and never get tired of, one is Pink Floyd and the other is Acid Bath. While Dax Riggs is not the greatest front-man live (he comes across as too shy at times), he is one of my all-time favorite vocalists (plus his lyrics are beautifully dark). Dax's voice mixed with Sammy's background screams are the greatest one two punch vocally I have ever heard. I know they are a mix of different metal genres, but I still consider them part sludge. God I'm always looking for an excuse to jizz over Acid Bath (now playing Dr. Seuss is Dead).

Also Dyna-Sonar mentioned Dystopia (who I consider pure sludge), and man their album Human = Garbage is disgustingly great.

I'm with you on Acid Bath, I jizz all over them whenever I can. Got into them before I had internet (I am old) and heard them on a local underground radio show. He can be shy, in some of the old live AB shows he conjured up some shirtless intensity at times though (I have that bootleg DVD thing that Rotten released). While I still love Dax's voice I'm not too jazzed about his solo work. Pretty basic stuff. Funny that you mentioned Pink Floyd because I always thought the DBATEM album "If This is Hell Then I'm Lucky" sounded like Pink Floyd with heavier guitars. Agents Of Oblivion was pretty awesome too, some of the live vids like this one include some screams that evoke Acid Bath a bit, even with crappy audio. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm3by_KIVUU

Yeah, I love Ironlung and the guitars are heavy as gently caress. Too bad that he's not in the new lineup, they got a guy who looks a lot like him (fat, bearded).

That song is like one of those cool anthems that could be borderline silly but it's just too drat heavy to not dig. As far as redneck, who cares? Weedeater could be considered redneck and they're awesome.

Couple of pages late to the discussion, but Jucifer is the loudest band I've ever seen. Really, too loud in many ways -- never seen Sunn 0))) but I've heard how it shakes your innards. That's how Jucifer was, and my ears were ringing even with earplugs in for the whole show.

Gonna see Bongzilla next week :) I know Muleboy (and Magma) a bit and his girlfriend is an old friend of mine from school so hopefully get some hangs in before the show. Of course, I can't keep up with them, smoking-wise. :2bong:

I met Muleboy at a Bongzilla show a while back and he was one of the nicest musicians I've met. Dude just walked around the crowd with a huge smile on his face, headbanged to the opening sets, and was happy to talk with anyone/get a picture taken. I love it when a band I dig has nice members.

The band seemed wicked stoned as one would expect. They had a dude who's entire job was to hand them wax pens I'm pretty sure. Still played a wicked good set though.

Mike (Muleboy/PeeWee/etc) is really down-to -earth for sure. He works at a coffee shop here in Madison when they're not playing shows. If you're interested he has another project called Dos Males where it's just him and a drummer -- the clean vocals are very reminiscent of Torche rather than his trademark screech. Not sure how I feel about the vox but the riffs are, as expected, heavy as gently caress.

I really liked the one track he and Magma did as Aquilonian: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crwl-OZ1eZs

That is cool! Yeah, Mikey has some side projects. One was just him with a distorted synth making noise. Another is called Uusikuu (I think) which was just him with his ex-lady on keys and vox. Dos Males is the only one that recorded though.

You know how it is in a smaller city like Madison, lots of crossover and side projects. Magma is the drummer and vocalist for The Garza, which has the ex-bass player from Droids Attack. It's not stoner-y but more like Jesus Lizard, and Magma has a killer voice. I know about most of these bands like Droids Attack and The Garza because I do all the art for their albums.

http://thegarza.bandcamp.com/

I don't always want to pimp my friends out too much, but Droids Attack did some really cool packaging for their CD. The songs were all "ancient aliens" and "Mayan apocalypse" based, so I did the art based on that idea as well. We were proud of how it turned out :) It was a long process. Plus, Droids plays some really solid stoner punk, kinda standard sometimes but that's how you keep it going for so long!

Thanks, and thanks to alla y'all! I can hear the Tool, as well as lots of other influences (Elder, Neurosis, etc). It was cool to be a part of the album process with those guys, they had a pretty specific idea about the concept of the album and they wanted it infused with the surreal/psychedelic linework I do. Almost all my work starts as traditional pen and ink on bristol (I use a 102 dipping crowquill with Black Magic ink), then I scan it in and color it with a Wacom tablet and Photoshop.

Never seen em live. I had tickets to see them on their 10th anniversary of the release of "Pink" where they'd play the whole album live. Earth was their opener. Boris cancelled due to illness.
