I like their records and they're playing fairly near me next week but I have other things I should really be doing so I need to be convinced/dissuaded about going. You should go! drat, Stockholm is so good for stoner metal. So far this year we've had Vista Chino, Red Fang, Mastodon, High on Fire, Truckfighters, Windhand, and Blood Ceremony here. And this fall YOB + Pallbearer, Jex Thoth, Earthless, Saint Vitus + Orange Goblin, and Mastodon again are coming. So excited for that YOB + PB show, I love both of their new albums and will get the vinyls ASAP.

There's a metal-focused recording studio here that have started doing "Live in the studio"-type recordings of bands, and they're turning out pretty good so far. Skraeckoedlan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwvbXlDyEBg, stoner rock similar to Truckfighters. Colossus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILP4hkpazMs, they describe themselves as post-sludge, which I guess is accurate.

A couple of years back I saw Pike: http://pike.bandcamp.com opening for Baroness (One of the last shows with the old Baroness lineup, a couple of weeks before the bus crash, they kicked rear end as usual). I hadn't heard of Pike before, but as I enjoyed their set I checked out their album, and then kinda forgot about them. Fast forward to earlier this year, I saw they were looking for a new guitarist so I thought what the hell, and dropped them an e-mail. They eventually replied, and I auditioned. It will be made official in a couple of days, but as in most situations I can't help but blow my load early. I'm their new guitarist! Feels loving awesome. I'm learning the songs, and we've started writing some new material. So anyway, I'd like to extend a big loving thanks to everyone posting here, as this thread is pretty much what has gotten me into playing this style of music, and I've gotten so many great band recommendations from here. Thanks guys!

Thanks again guys, I'll let you know when we've recorded something!ElectricWizard posted:The solo debut of John Gallow (Orodruin, Blizaro) is some pretty awesome stuff in the vein of Paul Chain, Black Hole, and early Candlemass. Apparently a lot of the album was improvised, and it shines through with a lot of odd yet neat touches. Check it out if you're into 70's proto doom. Daaamn. This is what I'm talking about, so good.

They're one of the most consistently fantastic live bands I've ever seen, goddamn. Monolord also kicked some serious rear end, so make sure to see them if they're ever in your area. Nice. Seeing YOB + PB tomorrow, and Monolord (with Kongh and the Moth Gatherer) on October 1st

Saw Fu Manchu yesterday and had an awesome time. They seem to be still going strong, and had great energy throughout. Beers were drunk, heads were banged etc. I was really impressed by the opening act, Bloodnstuff, who I hadn't heard before. They might not quite fit into this thread (more of a postrock/progressive/poppish sound I guess) but they played really well, super tight and had a loving massive sound, especially coming from a guitar+drums duo.

So good and probably the best thing I've heard all year. Tatsuta Age posted:Man, either they just had a horribly off night or Pallbearer isn't very good live. Vocals especially were just baaaaaaad. Might be an off night. I saw them about 6 weeks ago and they were alright. Pretty boring to look at but they played well and vocals were not noticeably worse than the album. In other news, I posted a while back about joining the band Pike. Last night we played our first show together, at a Halloween party. We wore corpse paint for the occasion and rocked the gently caress out. Been a while since I last played live so it was great to finally get back on stage. We nailed the songs and I got a lot of compliments on my guitar playing. Feels good man. Aaaand last I'm seeing the Saint Vitus + Orange Goblin tour next week. I really dig OG, but for some reason I'm unable to get into Saint Vitus at all. I think the issue for me might be the production on the 80s albums as I pretty much can't stand listening to them. I know i SHOULD like them, and I really dig Wino in Shrinebuilder. Oh well, We'll see how it turns out live.

Yeah, It's an amazing record alright. They've got such good chemistry between them but the guitar work especially is stunning. If I were to nitpick, I'd say that the vocals are a bit uninspired at times. Also I'm wondering how it will hold up live, considering there are multiple guitar parts overdubbed pretty much from start to finish, and they only have one guitarist.

About a year back I posted about joining Pike as their new guitarist. Since then things have been going really well, we've played a few gigs and written a bunch of new songs. The plan is to start recording early next year or so when the songs are done. We played a great show in Stockholm last night, super happy with how it turned out. The sound was amazing and the crowd seemed to really like us. Had a few people come up to me to talk about our old vs. new material and which songs they liked best. One guy even bought me a beer! This is especially awesome for me as I've never been in a band with actual fans before. We also recorded the whole show, here's one of our new songs and probably our second best song overall! So happy I got to hear Dying Earth, probably the one track from last album I liked.

I treated my friend to a surprise concert yesterday! I booked it a month ago and we agreed that he would not investigate. We even managed to not spoil it during the concert by having him look away each time we went past the merch stall. Amazingly the opening act (Monolord, owned!) did not mention who were playing after them so he had no idea who the main act were until they actually came out on stage. "Wait is that?.... Holy poo poo it's High on Fire!" Such a great concert too, their new album might really be their best one. Felt like getting punched in the face for two hours.

Yeah I was hoping Purple would take AOTY, but it doesn't really reach all the way. It's def in my top 5-10 whatever but there were a ton of good releases this year. Here's my top picks for 2015: Elder - Lore Royal Thunder - Crooked Doors High on Fire - Luminiferous Khemmis - Absolution If I had to pick one, probably Luminiferous. It's hard though, they all stand out in different ways. For 2016 I'm super excited for new albums from Anciients and Beastwars! still listening to their last records even though there's tons of new stuff coming out. Anything else coming out in 2016?

Nice, I'll keep my eye out! I saw Monolord opening for High on Fire recently, probably the heaviest show of the year. Monolord are very good live. And yeah, Ancient of days is a great record. Conan vocals good. In case you missed it, Witchcraft have released a new album. IMO It's pretty meh and probably their worst album yet. There are a couple of semi-good tracks but the songs mostly go nowhere and there's no real power to them, lyrics are hit and miss.

New year, new shows. Really looking forward to playing some of it for a crowd.
