I just listened to Sleep's Holy Mountain for the first time (holy poo poo) and I like it a lot but it's more slow and doomy than I'd like at the moment. I like the spacey desert blues sound of songs like Space Cadet and the overall feel of Welcome to Sky Valley. I'd love to hear any bands/albums that are just as awesome. Thanks. Didn't see anyone mention Lowrider. VERY obviously influenced by Kyuss, but if you don't care about something being derivative then you should really like them. As far as I know they only ever did one split with Nebula and one full album. The stuff on the split is excellent while the album is mostly good but pretty boring in places. Still worth getting though. From the split: Lameneshma (ignore the dumb video) Shivaree Upon the Dune (you should like this if you like Space Cadet) From Ode to Io: Flat Earth Caravan Saguaro Thanks to the guy who mention Asteroid as well, I ended up buying the latest album altering Spotifying it.

From what I remember we got quite a bit from Circus which surprised me. Honestly I would have been perfectly happy to pay £30 to watch them do Whitewater over and over for hours.

Too much fuss, too much production and too much work. The first three are classic because they're so bare and stripped down and raw sounding. There's a simplicity that makes so many of the songs so memorable. They lost that a bit from Vol. 4 on, but they struck a good balance between flamboyance and straight rock and roll until Technical Ecstasy, but it all got out of hand after that. Heavan and Hell's The Devil You Know was decent because it stripped everything down again. It was a bit too slow for me and I got boring, but it showed there's still potential there for basic heavy rock.

Just bought tickets for Orange Goblin in Swansea next month. I missed my chance to see them when they played Cardiff uni's student union years ago so I'm not passing it up again, especially since Eulogy for the Damned is the best thing they've done since Big Black. I really miss their Frequencies/Time Travelling Blues sound though.

Saw Orange Goblin on Thursday and they were great. I'm not a particularly huge fan but they had a lot of energy and really seemed to be enjoying themselves. The setlist had a lot of variety too rather than just stuff from Eulogy.

Do Torche count as stoner rock? I'm reasonably sure I got them from this thread and I've barely stopped listening their new album Harmonicraft since it came out. It's probably one of the most uplifting things I've heard recently if that's what you're into.

Listening to Earth Rocker now, I really like it. It's a bit by-the-numbers, but it has way more energy than Strange Cousins, which kind of falls asleep after during Abraham Lincoln and doesn't wake up until Sleestack Lightning. They sound like they're enjoying themselves again and making me want to see them live again. Mastering isn't as nice and smooth as Strange Cousins though.

So I'm not the only one who likes Sabbath's new album? The mastering leaves me wanting, but it's nowhere near as bad as Death Magnetic, and that's some pretty good poo poo for 65-odd year old men who basically birthed a genre. Zeitgeist and Damaged Soul are standouts, but there really isn't a track on there that I feel like skipping, and I keep wanting to listen to it. It's no Sabotage, but if it ends up being their final album then I'm pretty happy.

Just heard Barcelonian by Vista Chino and I really like it. The production sucks but, well, whatever I guess. I get a really strong Orquesta Del Desertio vibe from that song, just a bit heavier and more focused. I really can't wait for the album, I've booked two tickets to see them at the O2 in Bristol on the 1st of November. Same place I saw them as Kyuss Lives and they were awesome then.

I think I'm glad that Vista Chino album isn't under the Kyuss name. It's similar to their style, but it's definitely not the 'same' band. I like it but apart from Barcelonian none of it really grabs me, it's background music for working out or driving or something. The weak link is definitely the new guitarist, which is a real shame. He's a passable Homme-a-like when they do old Kyuss songs, but unfortunately it extends to him being a bit of a pale and unremarkable imitation when he's coming up with his own stuff. I really don't mind the mastering half as bad as some of you guys though, I prefer how it sounds to ...Like Clockwork, although I prefer that album.

So John Garcia finally released his solo album. It’s not terrible, although it doesn’t break any new ground or anything. It’s better than the Vista Chino album, partially because it’s shorter and more streamlined, but it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a John Garcia solo album. It’s pretty decent driving/workout music. The only track I feel like I need to skip is Confusion which is awful faux-trippy dirge. They went to poo poo after Sabotage but it’s a hell of an album. I’d say it’s certainly the best thing Ozzy ever did. I guess it’s more straight-up hard rock than metal/stoner like the earlier stuff though.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage is were they started to sound a bit more over the top and less doomy, which went way off in the wrong direction with Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Day, full of overly-wanky guitar solos and bad 70s synth. All the songs on those two stumble in a million different directions. I used to hate Sabotage but over time it’s become my favourite along with Master of Reality and 4. I can’t believe how good Ozzy’s vocals are on it
