I'm still bitter that the bottom fell out of the baseball card market so my cards aren't really worth anything, but I have some interesting stuff that's sitting in my mom's basement right now. (Note that I don't live in her basement, just my baseball cards do). I stopped collecting when I was 15 so I haven't kept up with the last 12 or so years of cards but it was a fun thing for my dad and I to do at the time.

My favorite card is a 1996 Donruss Press Proof Gold Ken Griffey Jr. that I pulled out of a pack, they only made 2000 of each card. I have a Cal Ripken Jr. rookie card and an Alan Trammell rookie (might have Lou Whittaker too). I also have a couple of late Willie Mays cards, one of them signed and the other is a 1965 Topps Embossed (I'll upload a picture when I find it, these are awesome cards. It would be fun to go back and try to get the whole set.

I mostly bought packs when I was a kid but my dad bought me a few of those single cards for fun.

e: Found the embossed picture. How awesome is that?

I'm thinking about getting back into collecting by just buying a few packs here and there to mess around with this year (or maybe a few boxes if I'm having fun), but I have a few questions.

So Topps is basically the only game in town anymore, with Upper Deck doing as best it can and then a couple other also-rans? And Topps releases like 20 different kinds of insert cards/autograph series along with the base set?

Does everyone just buy hobby boxes hoping to get really rare autographed and cut-up jersey insert cards?

Basically, can someone fill me in on the baseball card landscape as it stands right now and the best way to get back into the game in order to have fun and maybe get something cool? Are there low-budget and high-budget groups or does everyone just buy random packs/boxes?

Topps is the only game in town since last year, as they have an MLB-exclusive license. Except for Topps, there's one small company that does a prospects series, but other than that, it's just Topps.

Upper Deck got into a major lawsuit/scandal for counterfeiting Yugioh cards, and lost their MLB, NFL, and NBA licenses.

Typically, a set will have a large base set, and 4-5 small insert sets. There's also a jersey card set, and an autograph set per product. Super high-end products will have a lot more jersey/autograph cards, if not entirely those.

Depends. Hobby boxes are much better to build a set with fewer doubles, hobby boxes have better odds at getting jersey/auto cards (and better ones), and there's usually certain extras that come with hobby boxes (like special inserts or promotions).

Right now, Topps is making about a dozen releases over the course of a season. Here's what is out, so far:

- Topps -

The basic set that has come out for 60 years. 330 base cards, along with gold, diamond, and HOF parallels. This set also has a bunch of inserts, a Topps 60 jersey set, a Topps 60 autograph set, and in jumbo hobby boxes, cards with leather nameplates embedded in them.

This set has been out since February. Series 2 comes out in April/May.

- Topps Heritage -

This set has come out for over ten years, and it is a vintage style set with each release paralleling a historical Topps set. This year's version is in the style of 1962 Topps, with similar looking cards, insert/jersey/autograph cards relating to 1962, and gimmick cards (like stamps) that were produced back then. There are only 1-2 big hits per box, but those could include HOF jersey cards and autographs. One big thing in this year's set is Sandy Koufax signing for the first time in years.

This set came out this week.

OK thanks for the info. It sounds like there are still a ton of sets, they're just all Topps now - that's kind of annoying. I guess maybe I'll start with the basic set and pick one of the other sets to mess around with. The problem is that I don't like feeling that my collection is incomplete but it would be impossible to collect all the sets. It almost makes me not want to start collecting again at all. If you give people too many choices it makes it harder to make a decision.

I ended up buying a box of series one and had a blast opening the packs. All I ended up with for my effort, though, was a Lou Marson catcher steals autograph and a Brian Matusz Silk Collection, there really isn't much less exciting than that. What are people using to store cards these days? Does everyone still use the books and 9 card sleeves?

I asked my local card shop guy about jumbo boxes, he says they're really tough to get ahold of. Is there any way to get them or do I just have to get lucky when the next series comes out or pay above retail on ebay?

Also, does anyone know when series 2 comes out or do they not really release that info beforehand?

Hell of an eye.

Sorta looks like a 1967 Topps on top of the Erskine.

Heh. Why am I entertained by such a thing? Some odd baseball version of where's Waldo.

Edit : A well spent 30 minutes googling. Best guess:

That's gotta be it.

Part of me regrets not spreading all the cards out all over the floor and shooting that at 16-odd megapixels or something instead.

It's more fun this way.

Can someone give me a rundown of how the various grades work and how easy/expensive it will be to find cards of a given grade? For reference, the set I'm thinking of putting together is 1965 Topps Embossed.

What grade are the cards I'm going to find likely to be at? How much of a premium am I going to pay going up each grade from the last one? I can basically forget about finding mint versions, right?

Also, I'm assuming this is something that my local card shop isn't going to be able to help me with very much. It seems that Ebay is probably going to be my best bet, anyone have any tips on buying cards from Ebay or is it pretty straightforward as long as the seller has a good rating? Should I just take their word on the grading of the card? I've heard people talking about having a card slabbed which I've taken to mean as independently graded. I don't think any of these cards would be like that since the priciest card I've seen in the set was like 80 bucks.

I've never put together a vintage set like this before so forgive any stupid questions, but I was looking through some cards I had when I was a kid and I have the Willie Mays embossed so I started thinking about putting together the set. It's pretty small and might be fun to track down.

e: Just realized I posted about my Mays embossed on the first page. Whatever, I love that set. :downs:

\/\/\/ Thank you so much for the info, I guess Ebay it is. It seems to be tough set to judge through scans, luckily I'm not going to be putting much money on the line for these cards.

Is this autograph legit?

Very hard to say. It broadly looks like a 70s style Willie signature and it's on a 72 Topps in pen, which are all good signs, but I've got some questions about the signature itself and Willie's signature has had so many different forms and looks that I don't really have a firm opinion one way or the other. What's the provenance?

I don't have any idea. My dad bought it for me, sometime in the mid-90's probably, but he doesn't remember buying it so I don't really have any info. I just dug a box of cards out of my mom's house over the holidays and was curious if this card was legit. I know you especially know a poo poo ton about autos so I figured I'd ask.

I found a few cool things in the boxes that I didn't remember I had so I'll probably post a few photos in a bit.

Here's some goofy 70's Kellogs "3-D" cards

Some rookie cards that are probably worth way less than they were when I bought them.

My meager Mays collection

Griffey

Weird Pinnacle "holograms"

Chipper Jones

I know all this poo poo isn't worth much but it was fun to find after being buried in a closet for 15 years.

e: I can make these smaller if they're killing anyone's computer.

For all the Tribute breaks I've been a part of in the last month, I was always unhappy with the results, especially because I almost always only have the Brewers or the NL Central.

I finally hit my first 1/1, and it's an auto printing plate (go to 1:30).

I just hope this isn't a joke, considering the date.

How does a Tribute break work? You aren't really guaranteed to pull any cards from the team you selected, from what I understand (though I know very little about the high-end sets). Do people sometimes pay money and get no cards?
