I've been collecting Dave Winfield cards since I was 7/1987. I met him at a book signing before a Yankees game and he was pretty cool. I'm currently up to 545 cards.

I still put a Topps set together every year from one of the sports. It brings me back to my childhood and every once in awhile you get something you can sell to make your money back.

Not the best story but whatever: A couple years ago I got a letter in the mail addressed to myself at a super old address, but the address was in my own handwriting.

Turns out Barry Larkin does sign via mail and it only took 15 years to get back to me.

This gives me a little hope for some of the cards I sent out years ago. The longest return I've gotten so far was John Madden in 4 months.

There are not enough photos of baseball cards in this thread. Show us your prized possessions and/or favorite cards.

I've been collecting Dave Winfield cards since I met him at a book signing in '88. At last count I was up to 619 individual cards. I don't have most of it scanned though.

Winfield's rookie and 2nd year card. At one time when I was a kid these would have cost an arm and a leg. I picked both up graded for less than $50 about 7 years ago. The corners are so sharp on the rookie but the back is pretty off center.

I love these cards because along with Winfield, Puckett was another of my favorite players. They had some relic cards made together when they both went into the Hall. Someday I need to pick up a nice Topps Puckett rookie because that's one of the cards I always wanted as a kid. I had a chance to meet him once when he was signing at a school my dad worked at, but passed to work my lovely fast food job. :(

Just a couple more. In 2002 I bought a box of Topps to put a set together and pulled this:

1967 Topps card #1. They inserted vintage buy-back cards into packs with some insane odds. It was surreal pulling it from a pack.

The same year I bought a pack of Topps Pristine and my refractor was this card:

I was so pissed that I got some loving no-name worthless rookie instead of a Jeter or Bonds card I could put in my collection and tossed it in a box. Nearly 10 years later and it books for $100.

I always thought the card market would crash if Beckett started listing actual sales values instead of 'retail' prices. 95% of packs are not worth what you get in them. Scratch off lottery tickets have better odds!

I understand the appeal of buying card packs to get that big hit though. But I feel much better putting together sets or collecting players.

Got an envelope in my own handwriting today. I was shocked because I haven't sent any TTM autograph requests since February 15th, and that was to spring training centers.

I'll have to check my records but I think this is my longest return yet. 230 Days.

Yeah the local card shop had a bunch of 1989 Fleer rack packs for 75 cents a few years ago (not that I don't have a stack of these in my parents garage somewhere). I bought 4 of them and got 2 Griffey rookies and a Billy Ripken fuckface card (with the black box though). Brought back a lot of memories!

edit--> I like the 89 Fleer design, and 90 Fleer, but the 91 design...:gonk: That yellow is still burned into my eyes 20 years later.

I'd also recommend set building, at least over chasing the 'hits'. There's a few websites you can join and trade doubles with people (I use sportscardforum).

Anyone doing the update set this year by the way? I'm about 50 cards away from completion and have a nice stack of doubles.

Also has anyone gotten anything good from the Diamond Giveaway? I've gotten a few 1955 cards and a couple of the diamond die cut cards. Had one of the die cut cards sent to me and they're really high quality. They're thick with a rainbow finish and they have a film you peel off the front like the old Finest cards.

Did those old Finest cards actually lose value from getting peeled? I figured it was like polybagged comics and it didn't matter.

I got one of those Tristar ball boxes as a bonus in a $10 box of mixed packs at K-Mart once. It was from 2005 and Red Sox themed. I got Jim Rice and it came with a certificate you could use to look it up on the website and verify authenticity.

The only thing I miss about Upper Deck not having the MLB license anymore is the Sweet Spot autographs. Although they where getting ridiculous with the parallels.

That Rice ball is probably worth $40-50 or so (on the market, aka eBay)

One mistake UD made with the sweet spot autographs was when they had people sign different types of leather besides the balls themselves (like glove material). I've noticed that those faded into nothingness very quickly because they used silver sharpies on them.

Well that explains why my Winfield faded. Gold sharpie. I got it fairly cheap on Ebay at least.

I have two more that I pulled from packs that where thankfully signed with a ball point pen.

Just curious if anyone knows if this has happened before and how long it stayed down. I've got some cards I want to redeem. I just know some nice old star cards are waiting for me there (not).

I think it's been down for about 48 hours. :(

I don't see how they rip people off. You're paying for the convenience of cash in your hand right now versus selling it yourself. Yeah people could just set up an ebay auction themselves (hell, a lot of the time that's just what the shop does), and you'd probably make more money, but you wouldn't have it immediately.

True, and the guy probably blew it all at a casino shortly afterward!

Topps put out Stadium Club sets until 2003. They tried to bring it back in 2008 by making it 'premium' with an autograph per pack and a chunk of the set numbered to 999 but it only lasted one year.

I just don't see the point if you cant trade, grade or sell them. Not to mention that a large portion of the hobby is in the autograph market.

There is a company that sells personally 'autographed' photos from players who I guess 'sign' the photo on an iPad. Sadly this seems like something that might catch on, as this company has a lot of younger players in their stable. I don't count this as an autograph, though. It could be reproduced.

I don't see how this is any different from a printed fake autograph, IE the 2007 Topps set design.
