Whelp, am I glad I asked. Thank you Mosaic Perception and Threatis. I'm gonna have to check work to see if we have any of those cds, and then onto iTunes I guess. Those were exactly what I was looking for. I kind of wish I could go back in time, smack my younger self in the face, and just yell "Listen to this music you idiot! I see a healthy discussion about NY or up north rappers, which I can respect since even I enjoy that style every now and then. I don't see as much discussion about rappers from the dirty south on these beloved forums though, and that's the type of music I like to listen to. I think part of the reason for the lack of southern discussion could be a shortage of new, decent music coming out of the south. Part of the fun I have with dirty south rap is looking into the history of it, and I really focus on music from the 90s. I dig deeper when I find something I like. I wanted to talk briefly about a couple of dudes from Memphis, though. Does anybody else have a small obsession with the history of the Three Six Mafia? For example, if you like their bangin' beats and also enjoy the comedy of their filthy lyrics at all, maybe you'd like stuff from these guys as well. You might feel like you've heard em actually, because like many dirty south groups, Hypnotize has sampled their success very heavily in their later work. When I think southern rap I think Nappy Roots.. Not necessarily their sound, but their content and overall vibe. I'm also a white kid from the midwest so take it for what it's worth... A friend turned me on to this song awhile ago though, Collective Efforts - Let It Alone.. It's relatively old, but captures the same vibe I get from Nappy Roots. Again, I don't claim to be any sorta Dr. of hip-hop, I just like what hits my ear drum right Edit: Where'd this B.o.B diss even come from? He just trying to feed off Tyler's hype? I do sorta the same thing a city at a time. I started on Houston/Dallas/San Ant, working my way through NOLA/Baton Rouge right now. I think the stories are more interesting than some of the music, especially the history of labels like Cash Money and then groups like SUC. A good example of this is a short history of Cash Money Records' independent years from the Amoeba blog. The main thing I'm obsessed with right now is Bounce music and trying to look at how it evolved over the years. Plus, its really loving fun to sit back and listen to Ricky B, and stuff like Magnolia Shorty "Monkey on the Dick". As for the current southern poo poo, the main stuff I always hear talked about is the future poo poo G-Side and other Huntsville/B-ham people (whose movement reminds me of 8ball and MJG's space age pimpin). Jackie Chain gets a lot of mention because of his association with PRGz/G-Side, and he also dropped a great mixtape Fear the Future. Then there's the mixtape that PRGz did with Diplo, and their most recent one, which are both pretty good. Other southern guys that are blowing up are Big KRIT, whose album Return of 4eva drops today. He's definitely one of those guys raised on southern stuff like UGK/8Ball & MJG/Outkast/Scarface. If we want to include Texas as southern, there's this guy Fat Tony, who I've been all about lately. He's really really unlike the rest of Texas and reminds me more of Lupe type stuff. Killa Kyleon is another Texas dude, but he's been around for a long time. He dropped a new mixtape a couple months back that's pretty banging too. It feels like the Southern stuff is always going to be this back and forth with critics and fans decrying the ignorant stuff but it will still sell. As easy as it is to hate on Waka Flocka and Gucci, they consistently work with artists who are deserving of attention like Pill and other young ATL guys coming up.
