Ross and Rae rap about the same poo poo so you should like them". I thought it would be obvious from what I quoted that this was a defense regarding his content. Of course he still raps about materialism but not so often to where there's nothing else to look for in his music. I use the "youtube argument" to give people a chance to listen to something they may not have heard before. If you don't have the patience to listen then I can't even begin to get my point across because in the end that's what it's going to come down to. On that note the only subject I derailed on was an argument with the Senate about production, in which I got schooled but rightfully so. I believe I brought up what others call conscious music and asked what the thread thought about it. Don't repent about being a dick, just make sure you're right when you do so.

nevermind, I'm done playing into the hater vibe that this thread sometimes degenerates into. I get what you're saying but I just don't like Ricky boy regardless of subject matter. And the conscious rap derail did make me giggle just because the argument sounds really lame. I'm just gonna stick to discussing hip hop and stop trying to bust balls (and failing.) Anyway, what do you guys think of GDP? This was posted in the old thread but I think the discussion was "other rappers who do heroin" and that was it. The beat's kinda weird but overall, I dig it. I have to add that I haven't been that into them like I have other bands, but they definitely have something different, not odd future different, but a somewhat different style than the rest. However, I don't think they will ever become big, alot of their songs are about heavy drug use and that doesn't seem to flow that well with the general population.

There was some interview where he was talking about working at his friend's studio (can't remember if he said it was before or after his first deal fell through) and after listening to the people who kept coming in to make tracks he thought "I'm better than all these dudes, I might as well be making my own music". And that's not why I hate southern rap at all, I've said numerous times. Most of the time, they can't rap. Beats are average (or sometimes hot) but then when it comes to the part between the chorus, it's garbage. Also I actually give Ross some credit because he actually seemed to get better after he started making hits. Most dudes would coast or whatever, but it actually seems he put effort into becoming a better rapper.

Does Southern rap have its moments where it's not artistically significant enough to be stored in the Library of Congress? Sure. A lot of the music I enjoy consists of a dude rapping about material possessions, or maybe killing somebody, over some sampled 70's R&B. Is this any worse than the kind of cerebral, meditative, Beat Nuts carnival tune you linked for us earlier? Nope. Maybe you'd be better off reading poetry if you're looking for some inspiration. Just pay attention to the way the words flow with the beat when you listen to southern rap, and not worry so much about the definition of each word in the verse. Take Project Pat for a great example, a literal flow virtuoso who might not be sharing physics equations or life lessons with everyone in his verses. I'm glad there's been a bit of talk about Memphis artists, and I appreciate the links to the dudes I haven't heard of. Has anybody heard of the rap duo DJ Glock and the Sawed Off Gangsta? I've only found one album from them ever, and I think they originally did a couple of Triple Six's hits. People say in various youtube comments that DJ Glock is out of jail and S.O.G. is still in, but I still haven't found anything recently. I'm interested in hearing the rest of their story. Here's all that I know by them, and anybody familiar with the body of work of Triple Six (90s era) would recognize these hooks. (alansmithee no click zone) Lil Glock & S.O.G. - Blow A Niggaz rear end Off (1994) Blow a Niggaz rear end Off Puttin' Hoez On Da House (DJ Paul and Lord Infamous on this one, a real smooth beat) Come & Get Ya Wig Split North Memphis Area (I like the sample and it flows pretty well, but its one big chorus for 2:44) Mask & Da Glock (One I initially knew as "Victim of a Driveby") Also, DJ Mannie Fresh is pretty much the best producer to ever walk this planet, so that means that Lil Wayne's early stuff is still good. I agree that he isn't great now.

I thought he was lackluster on the 2.0 Boys track. It's like he was uninspired or something. Meanwhile Ortiz and Crooked realized they were sharing a track with Eminem and completely spazzed out. What Flocka does is a lot more in line with what Lil Jon was doing a few years ago with records like Throw It Up, which is why he's on part 2 Of course that particular brand of Atlanta crunk does owe a lot to Paul and Juicy obviously. This thread is filled with lots of good (and new) stuff, thanks! I rarely listen to new rap unless it's on the radio, and that gets pretty depressing, so thanks for some new (to me) stuff to listen to! I'm probably a lot older than most of you (saw Public Enemy in concert when I was in HS). I listen to a lot of the old Jamaican acts who helped create modern rap, like U-Roy and Big Youth. It's obviously dated stuff, but I can appreciate what they were trying to do at the time. In the 80s rap was so new and fresh and relied on commercial success to get the word out and to enable a lot of people to appreciate it. In the 90s rap started to branch out into different directions with sometimes hilarious results, like Shaq and Fu-Schnickens. Here's a track I loved in the 90s: Paperboy's Ditty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imhEIcv7tI4 Recently I've been loving the stuff coming out of the Netherlands. A lot of it is derivative of rap/hip-hop in the US, and I like it better than the most of the stuff coming out of the UK (like Dizzee Rascal who I cannot stand). I can't understand much of what they are saying, but I like their take on rap/hip-hop. Zwart Licht - Blazin': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtLnufqPGWw The Opposites - Broodje Bakpao: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hn-noqGTwuo Dio - Aye: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmVDr93UJQQ Full disclosure; I love Die Antwoord and their whole gimmick.
