Heres Busta, Layzie Bone, Twista and Jaz-O spitting that staccato flow on a track called "60 second assassins". They really needed to add Bizzy and Krayzie Bone, and Tech N9ne for the ultimate fast spitting track.

I'm sure this has very little to do with the general discussion in here, but I love Childish Gambino but dislike most rap simply due to lazy, creatively uninteresting lyrics. So far I've been recommended Lil B, Wale, and J. Cole as artists with clever and/or well-written lyrics. Is this accurate? And if not, what rap does have particularly well-written lyrics?

I'd prefer if it's not straight nerdcore, but Glover certainly has his fair share of nerd references, but I'd also prefer if it's not straight gangster.

Can you clarify well-written? Also, why would discussing lyrical MC's be outside the general discussion here?

Oh I didn't mean outside of the scope of the thread, just outside of the current discussion. It was a way of saying "Sorry I didn't read more than a page of the thread but I have a question that I didn't see being discussed at the moment."

As for "well-written" I meant thoughtful, clever, or poetic, to a degree beyond the norm with a vocabulary beyond remedial - I understand that backpack seems to be a dirty word in most circles, but it has an appeal to me musically. I don't mind self-aggrandizing lyrics as long as there's something more to them - though it took me a while to get used to.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Initial listens are proving fruitful.

As long as you get that most rappers rap about how great they are, and you aren't insisting on any deeper content, I mean, 99% of Dong Lovers raps are about bitches, getting money, and how he can gently caress bitches now that he has money. I do like it though.

For clever wordplay and vocabulary, here are some artists I enjoy:

Obie Trice - Cry Now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6y1heLsPyo&ob=av2e
I'm always happy to Stan for Obie. He's got a wider than usual vocab that he works into his rhymes very well. Discussed earlier in this thread, this is one of the dopest songs about getting shot one can find, and his wordplay here is fantastic:"...you won't X me out Malcom// My exodus will never be from a violent outcome// I'll turn exorcist on niggas with extra clips// Exit on my ethics, is no longer present// X-rays showed I was this close to heaven// So for future reference I stay this close to a weapon...". Everything Obie's done is pretty dope.

Saigon - The Invitation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loloqFZNKV4
Here Saigon likens prison to a party, and we're all invited! This is a dope album, Saigon is fairly lyrical, and with like 14 just blaze beats, you can't lose. "Ain't nothing stopping the murder in this metropolis/ I represent the poor and profitless, corner monopolies// The pessimists outnumber the optimists on the block and it's// Coppers that got binoculars cause I can feel them watching us.// If only they knew what we had a pocket of// They probably swarm in without warning, pointing glocks at us."

I was going to do a few more, but I'm running a little behind. The recommendations for KRIT are spot on, KRIT is dope. One should also check out Slaughterhouse and it's members solo stuff. The BARSBARSBARS way of rapping definitely isn't for anyone, but you should give it a listen to see if it's for you. The Bar Exam Series by Royce and Hip Hop Weekly by Crooked I are good examples of this. Similarly, the Mixtape Messiah Series by Chamillionaire.

Speaking of some things not being for everyone, I never enjoyed any of Lil B's music, although some people here swear by him, and to each their own. Still, one owes it to oneself to give him a listen, theres alot of hiphop out there, and theres no way to know what one might be into, especially if you're starting out. After checking out these rec's, go through the thread, click on links, and just see if anything appeals to you, most of the rappers that get posted here have above average lyrical skills, and have done SOMETHING to distinguish themselves.

VVVVV Elzhi is super nice, go find Elmatic out there somewhere.

1. Str8 Killa No Filla is his album with SS right? If so, it's pretty awesome. Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs is my favorite tape of his though.

My favorite track on Str8 Killa has to be Goon poo poo with Sick Jacken and Planet Asia. Freddie's verse is like 45 seconds long at the end of the track, but it goes so loving hard. "Bitch I'm the devil in a pair of Jordans" :stare:

Other awesome songs: 4681 Broadway, The Ghetto. His 2 minute cover of Born 2 Roll is awesome too.

2. Everyone loves Freddie Gibbs because Freddie Gibbs owns.

The first SH album at least delivered if you were just looking for rappity rap rap (which I was, and enjoyed greatly), the second doesn't deliver on any level really.

You can identify the group "chemistry" of SH by just seeing how they came together. Joe Budden wanted a song on his digital album with a bunch of dudes just rapping real good, so he found a bunch of said dudes. They got together and proceeded to rap real good. There's nothing more tying these four together whatsoever, so for them to try to force it to be anything more was bound to go sideways.
