DOES NOT RESPECT THE RUN

BUT THEY WILL
He really is. He's snoozing on the red garage couch now, woofing and running in his sleep. Here are a couple more pics, including the saddest one from when he got pneumonia, giardia, and (I think) parvo all at the same time. That was when we finally went to a specialist and got the IBD diagnosis.

Egon insisting that the couch is more comfortable than going to bed

Egon recovering from some procedure or another. He's good enough about stitches that a shirt will keep him from messing with them too much, we have narrow halls in our house and the e-collar was a poo poo show the couple of times we tried it.

Here's the sad one. This poor loving guy. We traded off spending time with him every couple hours each night since he'd need to go outside or just couldn't get comfortable enough to actually sleep. His look here is mostly a combination of lack sleep and maybe dehydration since he could barely keep anything down at the time.

Once his muzzle started going gray we figured he might as well finish out the look

Here's one right after he got some fluids at the vet. I had no idea they could just inject them subcutaneously like this. The hump gradually shifted down his shoulder but was mostly gone by the end of the day.

I have no idea what we're going to do with this insurance bullshit. Been spending the last couple hours just looking through all our photos and remembering all the stuff he's been through and how hosed we would have been without the insurance plan we had.

That’s a good point, I’ll get insurance added for Pongo the next open enrollment. It’s pretty cheap through work.

Met this newfiepoo at the dog park; chatting with the owner he is only 9 months old and will likely double in size. Hasn’t been fixed yet because he needs the hormones with his fast growth.

Now you can take this knowledge and turn it into part of yourself.
In general if you can get it and afford it I most strongly recommend Trupanion. They have relatively little hoops to jump through to get money back, their coverage is straightforward and they're overall relatively easy to deal with. They are, however, I believe a bit on the pricey side, especially for older pets. Any pet insurance makes my life so much easier and I'm sure there are providers that are just as good out there, but I've had the best overall experience with them both for my own pet (very sick cat racked up thousands in the ICU, they reimbursed 90% without batting an eye) and for getting clients' bills reimbursed.

Disclaimer: I am a vet but nobody is sponsoring or paying me to have this opinion. Also this is based solely on my experiences as a client and a provider, your mileage may vary.

Yeah Trupanion seems like the way to go for us, plus our vet's preventative care plan to spread out the cost of his tests/vaccines and such. Unfortunately neither will cover IBD specific things since it's a preexisting condition so we're on the hook for a bunch of medications. Hopefully we won't need to change up his regimen anytime soon though since that'll involve specialist visits and testing and none of that will be covered either.

I have Trupanion and the rates have doubled over 7 years.
They only cover the basics and the $500 deductible 'per issue' can quickly add up.
Out of 7 years at ~$150/month (~$12000) we've gotten ~$900 back. Sure, if she runs into some major issues, it will add up quickly, but even so, it's hard not to think we've been better off putting the money aside.
On the plus side, I know we'll never have to make *that* decision because of money issue and that is nice to know.

A friend mine had 2 Danes, 1 on Trupanion and 1 on PetPlusUs and said that PetPlusUs was far better to deal with and worked out cheaper.

Watson goes in for his neuter today, que nervous/anxious mom and dad all day long until they get the call he's fine.

edit: We have trupanion on Watson, haven't had to use it yet and it's costing me I think around $80/mnth.

edit edit: Got the word that Watson is out of surgery and recovering well!

Newfs are just a whole special thing on their own and I love this big lad's big blocky head almost as I love my own. My fluffinator is just over three and a half and I don't see myself without one of these in the future at this point. But Danes still get top billing for me.

Speaking of, Amythest is still trucking. She's got 22 days until she's 13 and a half. Mobility has fallen steeply in the past month and while she can walk on her own, she's in a sling when she goes out for safety reasons and often needs help getting up to a stand. She is very, very delicate at this point and considered to be a terminal pet by the vet (there's nothing left to do for her). She eats like a horse and drinks like a fish. She's still very much herself, but almost all day every day is nap time. The other dane and the newfie love on her, but they keep their distance to play and roughhouse. She's not really up for it anymore, but she's content to get neck scratches and sleep.

She outlived her perennial rival, Kaydasemar'e, as of June 11th. KD got acute kidney failure and passed very, very quickly. Vet said it was genetic and she was incredibly lucky to have lived as long as she did, stating that she was a ticking time bomb from the moment she was born. She was diagnosed on the 20th of May and was surrounded by her dog pals, in her favorite bed, and she was gone in a second flat. I cannot believe this crippled old hellbitch of a dane outlived a 30 pound dog she tried to murder almost 8 years ago, but she sure fuckin did.

Amythest has been down since Wednesday. She's eating, she's drinking (with assistance) but she's spent the past 24 hours or so doing that pre-death deep sleep. I've been on the floor with her ever since she went down. I don't think she'll make 13.5, but less than a week away is a hell of an accomplishment for a very big girl with murder in her heart.

KD's been gone a month. Maybe Amythest is going for beating her by a month exactly. I don't know.

We don't have a dog permanently, but my gf raises service puppies before they go get their final training and assignments.

Our current hero boy went hiking today in the desert and he was perfect and beautiful as ever.

not pictured: slurping up a lot of water from a taco bell cup and a not-allowed-please-don't-tell amount of nacho cheese in a moment of unobservance at home

He also responds to his commands in hand gestures, english, spanish, french, AND russian. He's a brilliant student and while he's only here with us for one more month, which makes us very sad, he's going to be amazing and help someone who needs it.

She just passed. It was over in about a minute. It wasn't as painless as I could have hoped, but there's only so much you can do about that. There will never be another Amy. And given all the excitement and management she required over her wonderful lifetime, maybe that's sort of a good thing on some level.

And this concludes every single dog on the front page of this thread.

13 years, 5 months, 26 days old. I owned her for 13 years, 4 months, 1 day. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Mostly. She was chaos and mayhem and just, one of the best dogs I've ever met. It's weird to take the cloth out of the doors around the house tonight (she'd lock herself in rooms if we weren't home and destroy them if there was thunder, so we started putting rags in the doors so she couldn't close them).

ImplicitAssembler

Dear Customer,
Congratulations on acquiring your Great Dane
Please find the instructions for your particular model listed below:
Although your Great Dane comes fully assembled, due to particular issues during production, we do occasionally have issues with components such as screws. They invariably are either loose or missing altogether.
Mode 1: This is the sleep mode, activated for the majority of the day as the Great Dane ages. This is normal and you should not worry about it, just accept the peace and quiet while you can.
Mode 2: Anarchy. Although we have tried to ease the effect of anarchy mode, it’s not always possible. There are inherent issues with the timer settings of anarchy mode in regards to there being none. Should your Great Dane suddenly go from comatose to running around the walls, we cannot stop this feature.
Sunlight: Do not allow your Great Dane to stay in the sun too long. They can burn if left unattended but they also recharge. Too much of a charge and mode 2 can be activated without warning.
Energy consumption: This has been an ongoing issue as their energy consumption is too direct. We have tried to put baffles, non return valves and diversions in place but none seem to work adequately. Safe to say what goes in comes out, in both solids and gas. The gas, although noxious, can only inhibit breathing of the owner for up to ten minutes.
Naming: Your Great Dane comes untitled as we feel owners should use names of their own. If you are unsure, we have listed below a few names our owners like to use:
Shithead
Nutjob
You’re kidding me
Is that yours?
Don’t you dare
Ok, you
rear end in a top hat
Put that down
Why?
Get that out of your mouth
The zipper: We ask you not to try to open a Great Dane's zipper on their back as this will invalidate your one hour warranty. Rumours that they are merely toddlers in a dog suit is highly contested.
Software: Your Great Dane is pre-installed with the highest software and hardware. This includes the loyalty chip, the steal the dinner chip, fun chip, the biting chip and, of course, the highly popular mayhem chip. They are all running on the Whatthehell operating system 12.2. Although this has been in circulation for many years, we have found it simply cannot be improved upon.
Should you have any queries you can reach us on 1800-what-did-I-do
Thank you.
We hope you have many years of enjoyment with your Great Dane.
Please be aware that by the time you have read this, your warranty will have run out.
Unfortunately, we do not renew warranties and we do not offer refunds or returns..ever. It’s your problem now.

Accurate, I’m pretty sure the Dane part of Pongo is dominant.

For example, I just took him for a 5 mile walk at 5 am in nice cool weather before it got hot. He was a very good boy the entire way. Right when we got home he saw a bunny or something as we were going in the fence gate. Once inside I let him off the leash and he tore down the fence line trying to find it.

Once inside, I told him to lie down, which he did for about two minutes, after which he then proceeded to thunder up the stairs and back down with everyone still asleep.
