For the first time in almost fourteen years there is not a Stargate movie or series currently in production. This thread was created to discuss, celebrate and look back at the franchise as a whole.

The Premise
Several million years ago, an ancient race of advanced humanoid beings, now known as the Ancients, created a device capable of near-instantaneous transportation across the universe by means of a subspace wormhole. This device, which has been used by countless races since its creation, has more commonly become known as a "Stargate"

Stargate: The Movie (1994)
<info pending>
Main Characters:
Col. Jonathan "Jack" O'Neil (Kurt Russell)
Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader)
Ra (Jaye Davidson)
Catherine Langford (Viveca Lindfors)
Skaara (Alexis Cruz)
Sha'uri (Mili Avital)
Lieutenant Kawalsky (John Diehl)
Kasuf (Erick Avari)
Lieutenant Feretti (French Stewart)

Television Series
Stargate SG-1
SG-1 is a television spin-off/sequel of the Stargate movie. The two-hour pilot episode "Children of the Gods" originally aired on July 27, 1997. "Unending," the final episode of the series, aired in the UK on March 13, 2007 and in the US on June 22, 2007.

Main Characters:

Jack O'Neill "It's 'O'Neill', with two L's!" (Richard Dean Anderson) Jack, is a Lieutenant General, in the United States Air Force, who served eight years in the Stargate Program until he was transferred to The Pentagon to become the head of Homeworld Command (also called Homeworld Security). He was the original leader of SG-1 and later became the commander of Stargate Command

Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) Samantha Carter is an astrophysicist, engineer and pilot who was the operational leader of the Atlantis expedition for one year, after playing a key role in bringing the Stargate program into existence as a member of SG-1. Considered Earth's leading expert on the Stargate and a host of other alien technology, Jack O'Neill once emphatically proclaimed her brain to be a national resource. In 2009, Carter was made the commander of the Daedalus-class ship, George Hammond. She is a very capable officer despite her reproductive organs being on the inside.

Teal'c of Chulak [pronounced ˈtiːəlk] (Christopher Judge)also known as Teal'c of the Tau'ri is a Jaffa in the service of Stargate Command and devoted to the cause of the Jaffa Rebellion. Teal'c is a Jaffa from the planet Chulak, a planet orbiting a binary star system. He will be 162 years old in the year 2011, after aging 50 years trapped on the Odyssey. Teal'c was formerly in the service of the System Lord Apophis as his First Prime.

Doctor Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) An individual of great integrity, often passionately arguing against morally unsound plans. He tends to be very respectful of alien cultures, except when their culture involves immoral practices, and he often approaches the unknown with an almost childlike sense of awe. However, he seems to have a hard time accepting no-win scenarios.

George S. Hammond (Don S. Davis) Commanding Officer of Stargate Command for seven years, before becoming head of Homeworld Command.

Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) aka "Cam" is the current leader of SG-1 since 2005, after Lt. Colonel Samantha Carter. He was a talented United States Air Force pilot where he was given the callsign "Shaft", and once participated in the Battle of Antarctica, where he was injured. After recovering, he requested to join SG-1, only to discover the other members, Carter, Teal'c and Dr. Daniel Jackson taking different posts, but after a few months, he eventually got the team back together. For most of his time as commander of SG-1, he fought the Ori, as well as the Goa'uld, particularly Ba'al. He was recently promoted to full-bird Colonel.

Hank Landry (Beau Bridges) a Major General in the United States Air Force and the Commanding officer of Stargate Command since Major General Jack O'Neill was made head of the Office of Homeworld Security. He is also the father of Dr. Carolyn Lam. He is fond of quoting famous people from history.

Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black) a thief and con artist, former Goa'uld host, and current member of SG-1. Vala has a tendency to lie and trick people in an attempt to get her way. This sometimes gets to the point where she assumes it is necessary when it really isn't, such as when she is required to take a psychiatric evaluation and she gives fake answers in an attempt to avoid being "tricked". (SG1: "Morpheus") Despite this fact, she has proven herself to be quite courageous and trustworthy in many circumstances, and is now a valued member of Stargate Command.

Jonas Quinn (Parker Lewis...aka Corin Nemec) a Langaran scientist and former member of SG-1.

Stargate: Atlantis
a television series spin-off from Stargate SG-1. Stargate Atlantis began airing in 2004, and concluded after five seasons. "Enemy at the Gate", the final episode of the series, aired on January 9, 2009

Main Characters:
John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan)
Doctor Rodney McKay (David Hewlett)
Teyla Emmagan (Rachel Luttrell)
Doctor Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson)
Doctor Carson Beckett (Paul McGillion)
Ronon Dex (Jason Momoa)
Doctor Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite)
Aiden Ford (Rainbow Sun Francks)
Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping)
Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo)

Stargate: Universe
The third television series spin-off premiered on October 2, 2009. The Cancellation of the show was announced on December 16, 2010, with the final episode airing May 9, 2011.

Main Characters:
Doctor Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle)
Everett Young (Louis Ferreira)

Eli Wallace (David Blue) Is a goon. Can't believe that Doctor Rush has had CONTROL OF THE SHIP THIS WHOLE TIME AND DIDN"T TELL ANYONE!
Ronald Greer (Jamil Walker Smith)
Matthew Scott (Brian J. Smith)
Tamara Johansen (Alaina Huffman)

Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque) Chloe is the daughter of USA Senator Alan Armstrong. She studied Political Science, Crying, and Earth history at Harvard. Chloe's time on Destiny was split between being a cocktease to Eli, Crying, Having sex with Lieutenant Scott. Being kidnapped and experimented on and having sex with the Nakai, and crying.

Execu-speak posted:

Chloe was an annoying little primadonna cow and every episode or b-plot that involved her was pure death for the show. In fact I am prepared to chalk the shows demise entirely up to Chloe.

THE BEST HEADMISTRESS EVER
For any newcomers: Stargate isn't kidding about its serialized nature. It introduces elements in early episodes that won't go away for years (for better or for worse, what's up replicators?). The continuity and attention to long term plot arcs is really wonderful in the Stargate series', and that dedication really rewards the viewers. I don't think I've ever had so much fun watching another TV show.

So, enjoy the original movie first, and then get started on SG-1 season 1! Episodes 1-3 are great. If you can make it through episode 4 ("Emancipation" aka "The Turd"), then you will be subsequently graced with the best sci fi show ever produced.

Watch Showtime's version of the first episode to see some truly beautiful breasts. Also, I think I just made the thread creepy. Sorry!!!

Wow 1 post in and the mongols episode is already being shat on. Emancipation is a good episode and don't you believe anyone who says otherwise.

Also yes, watch the original Showtime version of the pilot, it has been cut and recut so many times (because it had boobs) that it's probably hard to find it though. There's that edit, the cable edit, the syndication edit (SG-1 ran on Fox for a long time on weekend afternoons), the producers released yet another edit a few years ago (which omits Carter's hilariously awful reproductive organs line), and there's probably at least one more. Get the tits version if at all possible because tits aside it's longer and has more to it.

Well, I'm re-watching season 1 right now, and the episode is just so freshly awful! The paternalistic aspects of it and condescending tone make me cringe. It's not the last time that the airforce/US tries to change a culture in SG-1, but making the people not white in comparison to the overwhelmingly white protagonists was just really lovely. They tackle equality questions much better in other episodes (like that one planet where O'Neil unwittingly participates in genocide). They fail miserably in this one.

....but I'm already at "Enigma", which is an incredibly great episode! It's the introduction of not only Maybourne, but the Tollan, who were my favorite alien race (besides the Oshen, who I always rooted for).

I really loved Stargate SG-1 when it was on, but felt Atlantis really made a turn for the worse after season 3 or whenever it was with that stupid episode with the exploding tumor. Universe I could never really get into, so I'm kind of glad that there are no Stargate shows on right now. I think the whole Stargate series could use some time off so that they can get some new ideas.

Also, Emancipation was an awful episode, it's probably one of the worst episodes in all of SG-1.

SG1 was pretty good until MacGuyver and Daniel had an offscreen fight and they almost never appeared in the same scene again. (Also MacGuyver was phoning it in so hard by the mid seasons he could've put Nokia out of business.) SG1 got better when Crichton and Erin travelled through a wormhole and arrived though.

Atlantis felt much like TNG in that it was neither good nor bad it was just there. Never watched SGU.

The best SG1 episodes were easily much better then the best TNG and DS9 episodes (and the worst episodes not as bad) but it never reached the level of writing and drama that B5 and Farscape did.

Goons rage on Atlantis a lot, but I loved it. The chemistry between the actors was palpable and you could see how much fun they had doing the show. It was just so much loving fun, exploding tumors and all! Also, the wraith were excellent villains (now compare them to the Orii, who were ostensibly the worst villains in the history of all television).

Watched the finale of SG-1 season 1 last night. When the Jaffa capture O'Neil and Teal'c and present them to Apophis via the TV thing, and O'Neil says "Hiya, pops" and Apophis makes his eyes saucer-level big and immeditely yells back "SILENCE!!" as though all offended that someone dare speak to him, I laughed so hard. That is classic stargate.

Anyone still know if there was a specific incident between Shanks/RDA? I googled around a bit and couldn't find anything, so far in the middle of season 3 the two actors are together a lot but don't really have good chemistry.

Upon rewatch its really amazing so far what a lovely character Daniel is. I have yet to find an episode where he is redeeming, he constantly acts like a spoiled child - if he doesn't get his way, he gets VERY ANGRY and STOMPS AROUND a lot. I guess he improves (as a character) past season 3, since I remember liking the character.

I remember long after watching B5 reading some internet forums about how Michael O'Hare (Sinclair) and Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi) hated each other, and how Michael hit on Jerry's first wife (who played Talia! haha) and how Garibaldi wouldn't appear on screen with him so the creator had to make scenes that split them up:

The first half of season 1 wasn't doing them any favors when it was the completely formulaic crisis in space episodes. Every one of the beginning episodes was "The crew runs out of X" which, along with the musical montages, got really old fast. I stopped watching at the 2-parter because it was just getting silly.

I came back later when they tried telling a little less predictable story, and the show was a lot better. Those first episodes were extremely boring to me though.

I suppose one of the reasons I could never get into the Orii plot was because of how technologically advanced the SGC was by then. So instead of having to illegally gate to questionable addresses and fight with their bare hands/lovely projectile weapons to stop the impending Earth attack, the SGC instead had pew pew laser space battles while sitting in command chairs, just talking to each other in order to defeat the Orii.
