This part really pulled me in when I first played it. It's creepy, mysterious and full of unanswered questions. Not to mention playable, which is a major plus in my book. This LP keeps reminding me why I consider FF7 to be the best FF (OK, in the top three, at least).

Fourthing this opinion. Midgar was great, but this is great for an entirely different reason...and becomes even greater later. Besides, I play games mostly for story, and this is the first real exposition of the story as a whole that we've gotten so far, and I was engrossed. Another thing that really impressed me at the time was that it was Cloud giving it, the main character explaining the story. Before this game, I had only played games with the sort of silent protagonist this genre is famous for; in all of the games I previously played, I was lucky if the main character got a line. They were pretty much ciphers dragged along for the story just like me, but here, Cloud is directing the story. I loved that.

Eh, a uniform's a uniform. If he's in uniform he must be the unskilled labor, right?

And who would graft a gun onto his arm? Obviously that's a powered multitool in place of his hand.

I don't quite get the flashback hate either. The only real difference between the flashback and the rest of the game is you aren't gaining experience and "loot." The beginning parts of this game would frequently have you go through "battle areas" where you might get in one fight, followed by 45 minutes of talking to people and cutscenes. After your first playthough you know everything in the story, so it's not like the flashback is a particularly bad offender of making you sit through stuff you already know- the entire storyline portion of the game does the same thing.

Edit: As an example, let's compare. You just fought the boss in the second reactor. Boss explodes, Cloud falls into the slums. You meet Aeris and talk for a while. Goons show up. If you know what you're doing, this portion will have no battles. You agree to escort her home. This involves going through an area you will probably not fight anything in, then through a town to explore, then to her house to meet her mom, then sneak out and meet Aeris again. You go through a super-short area that might get one battle. More cutscene talk. You see Tifa go towards Wall Market. You follow her and engage in a long process of cross-dressing Cloud and getting into the Mansion. You extract information, and finally get dumped into the sewers for a boss fight.

That's about two hours of gameplay with maybe ONE battle. None of it is new on a second playthrough.

If you know what you're doing it's actually about half an hour (all of Midgar can be done in a bit over 2 hours), but otherwise I agree. I find Midgar boring also, it's just long sections of talking/cutscenes broken up by bits of running from place to place. This may be because I've played through it too many times.

There is a difference yes, and I am saying people are that that stupid. Or in this case, the game is trying to make these Shinra suits in their almost literal ivory tower out to be especially detached from the "real" world that you come from.

This was awhile ago, but I have to say, you'd be surprised how far you could get by simply pretending you're supposed to be there. I recall some security expert would have his face printed on a laminated card with the AT&T logo, and claim he is there to check the phones, and so many times people would let him through security. Even though AT&T doesn't even do that anymore.

And I remember reading about another incident where someone just left some flash drives in an employee parking lot. Employees would pick them up, think "hey free thumb drive" and use them on their work computer, and get a virus.

The human element is pretty much always the weakest part of a security system.

Yeah, I suppose as long as you look like you belong, everything is fine. It's when you look worried and turning your face to see if nobody's paying attention that everybody starts to pay attention.

Sephiroth has *always* given off a very serpentine vibe to me. In the polygons, the FMVs, the art, and Advent Children--all of it. In particular the way his hair's shaped with the in-character model reminds me moreso of a cobra and the Masamune is kinda drat near like a viper fang if you stretch this idea.

So seeing him be anything other than calm, composed, or loving-someone-up always felt pretty unsettling.

Did they ever establish what Nibbelhiem was for prior to the Mako reactor and mansion construction? Most of the later places at least allude to some other intent and purpose, a reason why people would live and work there. Even Kalm has the claim of being a peaceful community away from the big giant Megacorp City.

All the times I played the game, couldn't ever see a real reason or cause for it apart from what Shinra put in.

I've been looking at my old ff7 manual for the psone and something I think this thread might enjoy is the little character bio Sephiroth gets. In contrast to the rest of the characters who get a full body picture/personality description; Sephiroth instead gets a top secret file, a closeup photo of his face (I imagine whoever took said photo is likely dead), and rumors about how awesome he is. Just goes to show how much ff7 likes to hype Sephiroth up as the biggest badass of all time...

I don't have a camera at the moment so if anyone else has a camera and a copy of the manual in question, I'd like it if they could take two pictures of the characters bios. One of Cloud/Aeris on the first character page and another of Sephiroth just to see the comparison. Make sure to censor the other characters on Sephiroth's page as well. Then upload it to blah blah whatever and post links in the thread. There isn't any spoilers aside from the characters so Elentor shouldn't have a problem as long as they are censored or cut out of the images.

Thanks in advance.

On a related note: I was such a goddamn Sephiroth fanboy as a teenager. Not as bad as most but still... I am slightly responsible for ff7 being as hated as it is :smith:

I still do like Sephiroth though and I've always found this section of the game to be rather creepy. I never once noticed the vague implications in the scene at the inn that Sephiroth doesn't sleep. That's actually pretty neat.

I've got that manual too. Looking at the bios, the pictures for everyone except Sephiroth and Barret are just their battle models, so there's no reason to take a picture of them. You could just copy what it says. Sephiroth has his close-up, but Barret's picture is some kind of early version of his battle model. He looks even more like Mr T. and wears a bright orange vest. I wish I could get a picture of that. It also has everyone's birthdays and bloodtypes, for some reason.

They still do. It's a Japanese thing. Birthdays let you look at horoscopes for that person, and blood types are supposed to hint at personalities, etc.

If you look at something like Hatsune Miku, a fictional singer/synthesizer, even that has a blood type and birthday.

The manual is pretty awful about spoiling the characters. Yeah, listing common Final Fantasy characters like Cid is fine, and you get most of the characters soon after they show up (if you're not an idiot). However, the manual spoils a character it really shouldn't even be showing, since it gives away a major plot point when the character shows up.

Bullshit. Blade Beam's plenty magical, I don't think fireballs are a standard feature of gatling guns, I don't remember what any of Red's are called because I never used him much but they all looked magic to me, and Tifa's got that water kick thing. And that's just the ones they already have in the LP. Plus all the characters and limits we haven't seen yet. Hell, I think Cid's the only one who might not have some sort of obviously magic thing. And I don't remember all of his, either.
