Oh my god the only times we, the player, ever see Sephiroth use the Masamune - the Cloud's flashbacks, the final battle - are all in Cloud's mind. But the actual Masamune, data-wise, is a gun. And video game internal data never lies. The sword's design has been mocked for its comical length but that's because it's not a sword at all. It only appears as a sword because Zack created that perception of SOLDIER first-class fighting with swords, and the sword's length is exaggerated just like every aspect of Sephiroth is - a combination of worship, awe, and dread. Really, Sephiroth was one hell of a sharpshooter! And that's why the EU is so detestable, the creators forgot their own universe! Cloud and Sephiroth shouldn't even be able to GET in a sword fight!

His Japanese name is 極限生命体宝条Ｎ. The N is extremely deliberate. The translated name is basically Ultimate Lifeform Hojo N, keeping with what Elentor said about name construction. The concept art does resemble some of the stuff Elentor posted.
