Based on two years of backpacking through north and south America and Europe my number one piece of advice is wetwipes, toiletpaper gets wet or destroyed easily, and you can't give yourself a sponge bath in case of emergqncy. A packet of wetwipes can be thrown arond like nothing and still remain intact. If you've ever had a case of food poisoning just as your getting onto a Bolovian 20hr no bathroom bus trip you'll know what I'm talking about.

Also, if your a keen hiker you can fit a tent, stove, gas canister, sleeping bag and all your regular clothes, toiletries, first aid kit and whatever else in the granite gear Blaze-AC-60. It's basically a big sac with a harness but the side pockets are great, and when I get to paraguy I can ditch my cold weather gear and it'll probably be small enough to carry on buses.

Seconding the iPod touch, everywhere has wifi these days so I have a web browser that isn't a theif magnet like a laptop, I'm using it right now so excuse the typos.

This is a general rant and not directed at you Cyberbully.

Unless you know for a fact you're going to encounter snow and heavy rain on a near daily basis who actually travels with rainproof pants? After almost a year in south america, including patagonia in the autumn/winter, and hiking/camping at least once a month I'd used them never, and given to a girl to use once for wind resistance on a mountain climb. After ditching them I had one occasion I think when they would have been useful in a hailstorm but we survived without them (and it was well below zero that night).

If you're going snow places or hiking in places infamous for holy poo poo yer totally gonna get some cold rear end rain and wind sure bring them. But if your going for more then a few weeks I'd leave em out, theres better things to weigh down your pack (Chocolate/alcohol/weed/another hikers head).

Katmandu don't like competition so they generally exclusively stock their own gear, some of their stuff is ok but generally I stay clear on principal.

Even with the poo poo dollar it's probably going to be cheaper to order overseas. I use an ultralight hiking pack for my travel pack, over a year of continuous travel and it's been OK, but a bit of a pain in the rear end as it's just a big pocket (Mountian gear AC 60 http://www.granitegearstore.com/Blaze-AC-60-P309C7.aspx with the head (total 200 on sale)).

Unless you're actually doing a lot of hiking you don't need a fancy pack, anything that's going to hold all your crap and not bust open is fine, and the cheaper it looks the less likely it is to get ganked. When I head out again I won't have my camping gear so it'll be a cheap lovely looking 40L pack.

You've probably done this but every major city in Aus seems to have a knot of outdoor stores, hit them all up so you know who has what. Then join all their member things, usualy it's free, or get on the mailing list. Then wait for the sales and get in there.

I meant to ask before, do those come with a zip down the side? I can deal with a top loader but after a while it just gets to be a pain in the rear end.

edit: ^^ Are they lightweight/pack small? I've been meaning to class it up when I'm travelling.

The only problem is when you have nice clothes you want to go someplace nice and that's expensive. I usually find the people I want to meet in shittier places.

Theoretically best idea/Practically Worst.

I'd take another pair or two at least, you can't always wash a pair every day. That idea works fine in theory but there's beer to be drunk and people to meet and you're not on holiday to beat your undies against a rock in the river every morning.

If you plan on eating street food you're probably going to get sick, have a pair or two of cheap cotton boxers.

I travel with about 6-7 pairs of boxers specifically because they're what you run out of first, and do washing like once a week/fortnight. This includes 3 pairs of exofficio and a few regular cotton boxers.

I've never had a problem with a black button up shirt, decent jeans or pants that don't look like northface crap and shoes that are mostly black.

hardcore option: buy a cheap outfit on the streets, including shoes, and dumpit back on the street when you're done. It's practically charity.

If you can find a pack with a detachable head/brain/the top bit they make excelent day packs. I do that with the 8L head of my pack. Worked for one year of travel, maybe 10L would have been better, but it's great when you can clip it back to the top of the pack and you don't look like some moron with 2-3 bags flopping around.

I did 2 years in South america, only having a laptop with me when I was living somewhere, I'd never travel with one unless I was working or were doing some sort of project.

I do think a little notebook computer would be really useful to have for Skype, Facebook, photo uploading etc. most hostels and hotels have WiFi you can abuse over night for that.

Otherwise I can't recommend enough having an iPod touch or iPhone or smartphone. Music, web browsing and skyping with those can help fill in time or research stuff so much easier, and given the weight and size it's a no brainer.

Hola poo poo yes. Seconding backing up your photos.

I've lost several 2-3 month chunks of my trip photos due to water damage ('Waterproof' cameras are often not waterproof).

I paid the :20bux: a year for flickr. Once they've been uploaded they keep the metadata and original resolution on the server forever (in theory). Totally worth it.

Def shop around for a good card. I was a dumbass and spent a fortune on withdrawls. Like probably hundreds of $$$over several years.

If you do get fees i reccomend taking out as much as you can, like $500 at a time to avoid fees. Even if you factor in getting mugged once a year (which I wasn't, but I just assumed i would) if you do the maths it still comes out cheaper than making lots and lots of withdrawals.

vv: That's true, I had issues finding the HSBC's in Latin america.

After travelling for about one a half years straight I think I used my raincoat about 20 times, probably less. It was needed about 6 times, during torrential rainfall and hail when it doesn't matter what it looks like.

If you plan on hiking get a good one and stuff it into the bottom of your pack and forget about it. If you don't plan on hiking buy a $3 plastic poncho from the guy outside a stadium, and get a nice breathable water resistant shell thing that doubles as a jacket.

I just buy a few stuff sacs from rei/mainpeak/wherever. Very lightweight, and if you haven't got them stuffed to the brim they conform to whatever shape you want. And slide out of the corner of your pack past the rest of your poo poo easily if you have a top loader backpack.

Then one or two more for random poo poo. Then just look for the colour you need. Usually I'm using a top loader pack so need to be super organized.
