So, here's some speculation that came to mind when watching the anime - what if Eren's 'newly discovered' power isn't for controlling Titans, but anything? It seems like it was more him telling her to fight than the situation that made Mikasa suddenly become a killing machine, and even has this repeated 'lightning effect'/'eye dilation' thing whenever he gives someone a command - the anime even goes further with some kind of biological... image effect thing.
It may require further testing. JEAN, GIVE ME YOUR LUNCH MONEY. Alternately, LEVI SMILE.

Perhaps he didn't get his heart slashed, but I'm willing to bet either way that damaging the brain is the only way to eliminate a titan shifter.

What if Titan Shifters can't be killed in human form? After taking too many injuries to regenerate, or take traumatic brain damage, perhaps they reflexively shift into a titan form and become brain-damaged Abnormals.

Also of note:

While it looks she might have pulled her strike on Bert, it looks like her blade just plain snapped off in Ryner's other arm. She woulda killed him if she could.

Those blades have already been stated to be fragile to begin with and with someone like Reiner whose body is probably tougher than a normal person's, I'd imagine his is tougher to break through. That's not even forgetting Mikasa was holding back because she didn't actually want to kill either of them, if she wanted to kill them, they'd be dead. It's already been established Mikasa is a killing machine and if she deems it necessary will straight up murder someone, the only thing holding her back was that they all became friends.

The one in Reiner isn't broken. Take a look at the base of the blade and what the fingers on her right hand are doing, she released it from the handle.

I'm sure this has been asked before but I don't want to accidentally stumble on spoilers. Is this the kind of thing where I can just start reading the Manga from the point the anime stopped and be fine, or are the order of events slightly different and there's actually stuff I'm missing from the earlier chapters?

Murdertime

Read from where the anime stopped. Not only did it not miss anything particularly important, a lot of scenes were made better/clearer in the anime.

Alternatively, read from the beginning. One of the great things about this is re-reading it and seeing that almost ever major reveal so far was foreshadowed very heavily, just nobody really noticed it because they weren't looking for it.

If you want to read the manga, you're pretty safe to start reading at http://www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/32/2 , as the two mediums tell almost the identical story. The final fight between Eren and Annie is quite different, so I'd recommend re-reading that.

There's also a short side-story not covered in the anime from earlier in the series that's important to later events, so I'd recommend giving http://www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/16/3 a shot as well. Now covered in the OVA!

Lastly, THIS THREAD IS DANGEROUS you should get out while you can! Untagged spoilers are everywhere.

I can't speak for UK/Aus law, but under US law if there wasn't an actual minor depicted engaging in sexual activities then it's just governed by the obscenity standard, which is a hard standard to meet in order to ban the material. The one exception is depictions that are actually fictional but represent themselves as real, which are considered pandering and can be banned like regular child porn.

Any tips on enjoying this Anime?

Not a huge Anime fan...at all...but was recommended this from a friend. It was really cool at first, and then it had humans that transform into titans and devolved into the most generic ~anime~ ever with the highschool characterizations.

Does it get better? I stopped around episode 14 I think.

The pacing ramps up a bit around then and there's a lot of good actions stuff in the rest of the series but other than that the show is what it is and if you don't like it nothings likely to change. That said you're over halfway through already.

It's pretty good at delivering twists and cliffhangers to keep the audience interested, and twists tend to be hinted in neat ways that make a second watch/read worthwhile.

Apart from that, well, it's a lot more visceral than it's purely generic counterparts. The main story is something like 65% done in the manga, if I remember correctly, so it also doesn't seem likely to have its narrative taken over by an endless cycle of fights and power-ups. It might have been interesting to see if it would have went in a more nihilistic direction had it not become so popular, though.

The chapter 53 raw is out.

http://www.mangabird.com/shingeki-no-kyojin-53?page=0

There is an interesting implication to what Grisha was talking about. Past lives? Genetic memory?

Edit: Regarding the military police: Nile is probably not a bad guy. He's just following orders and his faction had nothing to do with Nick's death. He would have joined the Scouts with Erwin, but fell in love with a barmaid and joined the military police to marry her. He's expecting his third child. Death flag.

So so far it doesn't look like Eren has Annie and Reiner's hardening power at all (or yet)?

I'm guessing that the Armin impersonating Historia part (I guess it works since the way Isayama draws them you could swear they were twins) and Jean (?) as Eren is a sting operation to strike at the Survey Corps' enemies/conspiracy from the interior, since I saw Djel Sanes and that other MP rear end in a top hat from the previous chapter
