I figured out Annie was the female titan because they have the same nose. It's a very distinct nose, not one you see in manga/anime a whole lot.

Side note, but this talk of languages reminded me of it and today I was thinking about it: Connie apparently only speaks in polite language because if he speaks normally, he'll use his region's accent and everyone will think he's a dumb farmer boy or something. It's a shame there's no way (I can think of) for the translator to show that, so they just mention it randomly in that one panel or so. It's just funny to me that all of humanity is stuck in these little walls and they still manage to develop dialects, but everyone (even the titans) apparently speaks one language, even if there is an older writing system (or even language).

I just like that there's literally exactly one (1) asian person in the entire world, but they all still speak with Japanese conventions like this (even if they're really speaking English or German or whatever).

You will never find someone in Cali saying 'y'all', because they would be laughed at.

Well yeah, but most languages don't have a specific vocabulary for varying degrees of politeness.

French has two entirely different ways of conjugating verbs depending on the level of politeness you want to use with a person.

True, but those are interchangeable with the plural form. You'd use "vous" either when referring to someone politely, or to a group of people. Kind of like the royal we. French is weird like that.

Yeah, pronouncing it in French would sound something like "vair-sigh-yuh" although the yuh is pretty subtle. It's more prominent when the word is modified, i.e. something from Marseilles, Marseillaise, sounds like "mar-say-yez".

French has some really weird pronunciation rules.

At least French has pronounciation rules, something English lacks.

A double l is pronounced like in Spanish really, becoming a soft "yu" sound, if that makes sense (I'm French-speaking, not a linguist, don't rag on me drat it.)

Except of course in words like ville, village, etc where the double l sounds the same like a regular old l.

The irony here is that "Livaille" would probably be the closest approximation of how to proncounce Levi (like the jeans) in French, since that's pretty much the only way of making a long I sound. Although in reality, the name Levi would probably be pronounced phonetically, like levy.

I took the title of the first episode to mean that the action is literally taking place 2000 years from now?! If some cataclysmic event took place ~850 years before that caused a civilizational collapse and a new calendar it could be that experimenting on "ancient tech" was what caused the entire titan debacle 100 years ago.

I thought it was "To you, 2000 years in the future" as in "To whoever reads this a really long time from now."

I like Levi because by all outward appearances he's the archetypical shonen badass who only cares about being STRONG and KILLING THINGS and if you die it's because you're WEAK, but the comic actually shows that while he's pretty cold and ruthless, he's actually a human being who cares about other people.

Heh, you could read the whole wall concept in a completely opposite way: A major theme is that the wall is (1) keeping out monstrous foreign elements that want to devour the people inside, and (2) actually trapping human beings inside and preventing them from fulfilling the dream of spreading out across the world. Eren's major motivation is to break free of the walls and kill all of the titans outside so that humanity can live free. Note that the titan's attributes and facial features are drawn in a significantly different, more realistic style, and that they're reminiscent of humans, but strangely deformed and defined by their large size. You could take the titans to be racially exaggerated depictions of non-Japanese people that are mindless and driven by pointless consumption.

Now, while most of the human characters are Caucasian, they're specifically German. The one Japanese character is also depicted as genetically superior to all the rest of the characters (granted, there's hinted plot reasons, but details). The area inside the walls is roughly the size of a small country (like Japan), and a later plot point reveals that the walls that are keeping the humans contained are actually made up of massive titans (foreigners) themselves. The creation of the walls is an event that occurred roughly a century ago (could reference WWII, or an earlier event in Japanese history).

Now, not that I necessarily believe that any of this is what he intended, but it's kind of funny how well all of that lines up in regards to AoT being about the virtues of imperialistic fascism.

EDIT: Haha, it also paints the existence of the monkey titan in a horrible new light.

The Colossal Titan represents Matthew Perry (the commodore not the actor). It all makes sense.
