And here I was, happy that for once I'd be able to sleep tonight after reading the latest chapter. But I just had to check the manga thread for the reactions to the revelations! :argh:

What really bugs me is that the first time in the manga we're introduced to Mikasa and Eren, Eren is having a dream-vision about Mikasa saying Goodbye to him, and the first thing Eren says when he wakes up is, "Mikasa, your hair's gotten long again, hasn't it?"

Hm, yeah, I can see that as a distinct possibility. (Though I don't know why Eren would comment on Mikasa's hair immediately afterwards). I think it's possible she and Eren are related, too. Actually, when Eren was thinking about his dad and saw Christa's Creepy Big Sister Figure in a vision, I immediately thought, "Oh that's why we haven't seen Grisha; he got a sex change to hide himself."

The story will continue to the end without ever revealing what was in the basement. After the final chapter in the final book, there will be a one-page teaser image of what was in there, and how it may have changed the tragic fate that happened to all the characters.

Personally, I hope that Isayama sticks to whatever is best for telling the story. "Stretch it out longer because it's popular now" always, always ruins stories

Breaky posted:

Given that would still be like 2 years away it's possible that they just go with finishing the story as it is. Unless it really does stay just as popular for that entire time too. I'd imagine with the story being so involved it would be easier to just do spinoffs / prequels etc instead of stretching the original story out further than planned.

I know I'd pay more money than I'd like to admit for "Attack on Titan: The spinoff that shows characters interacting in between key events."

Having read the manga while watching this series with friends who are seeing it for the first time can be very hard. There's been so many times I've almost burst out laughing at the foreshadowing, like Ymir's face when Pixis was announcing that Eren was a human-Titan. Or when I've caught myself almost accidentally saying Bertolt instead of Colossal Titan. And then on top of that, at one point my sister walked into the room and accidentally says, "Oh, hey, Annie; I haven't seen her in a w--"

And then of course I have another set of friends who'll want to watch it once the dub is complete and on Netflix.

:negative:

None of it will probably ever top the person in this thread who paused the video on Bertolt's face, to answer a friend's question, which turned out to be, "But where has the Colossal Titan been all this time?" though!

If it's true that the Reiss's family power is something that can only be used by the chosen generational heir, then that leaves the question of what exactly is the Titan scream power that Eren WAS able to use, and why were R&B so freaked out that he specifically had it, to the point of thinking it was the worst thing that could have possibly happened, possibly for the entire world?

Historia's name means "History" and "Story", which is pretty synonymous to the Reiss's family power. Eren's last name means "Hunter", so maybe there's something in that. He certainly seemed to have the power to make titans hunt whatever titan target he specified.

I'm not completely sold on that, but if true, erasing memories and having someone/some people who could be a back up Ultimate Titan-Powerer would be really good insurance against having someone wipe out all of your known family, thus screwing humanity out of the power forever. Plus, whoever ate the known Reiss family shifter would probably be able to read the memories and realize they hosed up real good, but they'd be able to feed themselves to whomever was the backup plan.

There's still a really huge mystery in how right after the supposed memory wipe, Eren seemed to have suppressed memories of *future* events, like the fact that 10-year-old Mikasa's hair was longer than he remembered. (And in the anime, seeing visions, one of which was the flowers he was standing on covered in blood, which would happen later that afternoon.)

EDIT: I actually think the tattoo has been retconned out. The anime didn't mention it at all - I think it was replaced with an vaccination or something.

A cross-stich pattern, I think. Too bad, even as a dropped plot thread I think that a tattoo suits Mikasa better.

One of my favorite parts about reading the manga is seeing how it evolves as the anime becomes a second-draft of some minor details. For instance, in the manga it was Armin's parents that died in the so-called Reclamation of Wall Maria, but in the anime, Armin's parents had already died trying to go to the outside world and his grandfather had died in the Reclamation instead. Then in a recent chapter in the manga, when Eren was naming all the people who had died because of the Titan powers Grisha put in him, he only mentioned Armin's grandfather.

That probably means that in the montage scene of all the people that Military Policeman had tortured and killed, the young couple who were were trying to go over a wall in a hot air balloon were probably Armin's parents. :negative:

I'm catching up on the manga thread right now. It's really funny to read reactions in retrospect to knowing what will happen in the story. Right now I'm to the point where Armin becomes the Colossal Titan and there's a civil argument about whether or not people liked that plot twist. What's really funny is frustrated commentators coming up with speculation why the story will just drag out and not get to the basement for another year or so, when the next chapter is going to be Chapter 85: The Basement.

The form of the 9 titans seem to be very similar among a specific type(Though not identical. Owl, Grisha, and Eren's Attack Titan forms are all a bit different). It seems specific bloodlines are better/worse for specific titans and royal blood does seem to unlock new abilities in the non-founder titans(at least for the Beast titan) but that's about all we know. But you don't necessarily need to be special to inherit one of the 9, like with Eren and Armin for example. Maybe Ymir had a bloodline that was "tainted" with non-Eldian blood(which would be quite ironic considering people were worshiping her).

There is one point in the Marleyan version of history where they say that the Eldians forced people from other races to bear their children, so that they could make more titans. :stare:
Also, Eren Kruger said that he didn't know how the Attack Titan worked, but he chose Grisha because it was the one that always wanted to advance forward and fight.

Was it ever explained why Historia’s mother was killed by Rod Reiss and the military police?

Also, that totally looks like a hat in front on Dina, not a child, from where I’m looking at that crop. Plus it could be a curtain or a suit on the left. Saying it’s a photograph of a man, and child is a little too on the nose. I was willing to give the benefit of the doubt at first, but it looks too me like a person who knows and is pretending not to.
Why would you even ask what people think is in the basement for a second time, when everyone’s already answered, unless you know and you’re invested?

I was watching the Castle Superbeast video that was linked in the other thread, and the guys in there seem convinced that Annie is Zeke's daughter. And at first I thought that was stupid, but then as I thought about it more, I realized that if we didn't have evidence to the contrary (seeing her real dad), it actually makes a lot of sense. It explains why her scream can control Titans, why she has a bit of the royal family look, and it ties her obsession with returning to her father into the larger narrative. I'm wondering if this is something Isayama had planned for originally but ended up scrapping, or if it's just a really weird coincidence. Or maybe it's a plot twist to come.

Ehh, there are three major problems with that. First of all, Annie is the same age as Eren, meaning that Zeke would have been 11 when he conceived her.

Second of all, Annie's dad has actually been shown, he was with Reiner's mom before Willy Tybur made that speech that Eren crashed. Third of all, when Marley was talking about all the abilities of the titans, they said that the female titan was one with a lot of abilities, including hardening and the scream by default.

Also, so much of Zeke's plot seems to be centered around not being born to the world as the way of saving it, I think it would be weird narratively for him to want to have a child.
