My guess is the titans in the walls have some knowledge that is required to end the titans, or that would otherwise drat the religious leaders. Most likely, the furry titans began whatever causes the crazy titans. Human titans were created somehow, in order to provide protection. The wall was erected as a temporary measure and to provide a base of operation against the titans. However, it became a permanent when the gentry and the Religious leaders found themselves comfortable in the centre. The human titans were forced into exile and have recently been prompted into action to free the wall titans. Probably due to the appearance of the hairy titan near or within the walls, or knowing that he would appear.

Spoilered just in case.

I think they were put there under the pretense that it was a temporary measure. Then the Gentry and the church got comfy in the inner wall and decided it was easier to live like kings than meaningfully fight back.

Human-Titans were shelved and/or outcast. The older generations hate the inner walls for what they've done, but live peacefully to avoid humanity's extinction. Their kids don't have the same perspective. They decide to ruin everyones party for revenge and to regain something important that was held in the wall cities(Eren/the basement poo poo). The older generation of Human Titans lose their poo poo and exile them until they fix their mess.

Hairy Titan: Original titan faction. Possibly doesn't actually have a motive beyond curiosity. Seems to regard humans as effectively ants.

There is a fourth wall, manned by human titans like Bert and Reiner, holding back the countless hordes of Titans. The only titans the Wall Humans ever see are the dregs that get through the first line of defense. Bert and Reiner believed that if the human settlement is allowed to fall then their people no longer have to sacrifice their lives to defend it.

More likely: There is at least two other (possibly walled) settlements detached from the walls we know.

To me it seems like there are two types of human-titan transformations. Type A: would be the kind that Eren, Bert, Reiner and Annie are capable of. These are brought about by other humans via injections and seem to endow the titans with (generally) less grotesque features and more specialised attributes/abilities.

Type B: Seem to be monkey transformations, which I would assume are the "natural" way titans are made. Everything so far points to Ymir being this kind of titan. The marked difference between Ymir's titan form and everyone elses, her history with Bert and Ernie, the talking titan that ate that dude with the diary, ect.

I'm imagining that the Type A titans have a fairly secure-ish place to live, but hold a historical grudge against the main wall humans. The type B titans capable of returning to human form are possibly outcasts or considered dangerous and unstable by the type A's.

I just like the idea of titan factions....

I'm going to place my money right now that the key is not just a key to the basement, but a key to something important in the basement. "They" don't want eren, they want the key. But all Bert and Reiner know is that Eren is important, hence taking him hostage rather than just getting the key and scarpering.

I noticed something, in the flashback Berthold has during training where he opens a window and sees a titan (http://www.mangareader.net/shingeki-no-kyojin/13/16),the titan he is seeing is a monkey.

it's hard to see because the page is so dark, but if you look closely you can see that the titan has hair covering his cheeks like the monkey we see later.

Re-reading that chapter is great in light of what we know.
