Here's a letter to the editor from my local paper

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/...?opinionletters

quote:

Wealthy people make sacrifices

“Time for wealthy to join the sacrifice.”

I cringe when I read a heading like the above recent letter.

Exactly what kind of sacrifice? Perhaps, getting a good education by attending night and weekend classes, perhaps working 14 to 16 hours a day, perhaps hocking one’s house to finance a startup business, perhaps saving by doing without to get a business off the ground?

Does the writer realize that according to the latest IRS stats, the top 1 percent paid 40.4 percent of total reported income taxes according to the IRS?

The top 10 percent paid 71.2 percent of the nation’s income taxes.

The top 50 percent paid 97.1 percent of the nation’s income taxes and the bottom 50 percent of Americans who earned less than $32,879 paid 2.9 percent of the income taxes.

Most wealthy people have made many sacrifices in their life, unlike those who are screaming, “Tax them more!”

Liberals want to raise your taxes because they love big government, which is obviously bad for this country as witnessed over the last three years.

This shithead always pollutes my local paper's Sunday edition.

quote:

Barrett: Herman Cain faced with the Clarence Thomas treatment

by Steve Barrett

Clarence Thomas can’t leap, two-by-four in hand, to the defense of fellow Georgian Herman Cain. As a sitting Supreme Court justice, Thomas tries to maintain detachment from presidential politics. Plus he’s a class act.

But nobody knows better than he what Cain — a man of humble origins not unlike Thomas’ — is being put through.

Thomas was abundantly qualified when President George H.W. Bush nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1991.

He had been chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for the better part of a decade. He was a Yale graduate. And he had been a judge on the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals. He was confirmed to multiple previous positions by the Senate, which now held his nomination in its hands.

One would think his high court confirmation, if not a trip to Burger King, would have been fairly smooth.

But working against Thomas was a combination of traits that makes liberals spontaneously combust even more reliably than a rumor that somewhere a schoolchild is saying a prayer: He was conservative and he was black. Putting such an individual in a position of national prominence makes it all too clear that conservatism isn’t some eerie white phenomenon.

Liberals couldn’t have that, so they had to destroy Thomas — or try to. And they were at times candid about it.

“We’re going to Bork him,” said attorney Florynce Kennedy. “We’re going to kill him politically.”

She was referring to the Democrat-run Senate’s remarkably vicious campaign four years earlier against Robert Bork, a Reagan Supreme Court nominee. Bork, the nation was told, would bring back segregation.

The smear was baloney-stuffed from the get-go, but it worked. Bork was toast.

The Borking of Thomas, however, would backfire in regal fashion.

It centered on Anita Hill’s allegations that he had said things nearly nine years prior that made her uncomfortable.

Hill didn’t claim Thomas’ words rose to the level of actual harassment, but even what she did allege wasn’t credible. Among other things that are improbable for a harassed person to have done, she followed Thomas to a second job after he supposedly caused her discomfort at the first, and she later asked him to speak to her students. She also called him repeatedly and met with him on numerous occasions — alone or with others — after he was no longer her supervisor.

It didn’t add up, and Thomas himself succinctly jaw-popped his detractors at a confirmation hearing, declaring: “This is a circus. It’s a national disgrace. And from my standpoint as a black American, as far as I’m concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. Senate, rather than hung from a tree.”

Despite a political and media barbecuing, Thomas won a close confirmation vote and joined the Supreme Court. He has served well since.

Which should comfort Cain as liberals seek to make an example of him to other black non-Democrats.

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell suggested to all 18 of his viewers that Cain was a racial loafer who hadn’t done much for the cause of civil rights. No word on when silver spoon white Bostonian socialists such as Lawrence O’Donnell became the arbiters of which people did enough for whatever cause in the face of violent opposition.

And now surfaces what Cain’s foes hope is red meat on a silver platter in their effort to puncture his candidacy: thus-far-unsubstantiated allegations from over a decade ago that he sexually harassed two women.

What critics seem to consider proof of the harassment is the fact that the National Restaurant Association, which Cain headed at the time, paid small settlements to the women. That indicates the critics are either ignorant or dishonest. It can be insanely expensive and time-consuming for organizations to defend against even the shakiest allegation. It is scarcely unusual for them to pay a settlement rather than drag things out. The notion that such a cost-benefit analysis proves guilt is mystifying.

I hope Cain is ready for more of the same treatment, though.

Liberals have a special reservoir of hatred for black conservatives. They want not only to defeat Cain but to pulverize him. Based on what we know at this point, it would be a shame if the rest of us abandoned him to that fate.

Protesters deny rights of others

America, enough is enough. To let a bunch of America-hating freeloaders disrupt private businesses is a disgrace.

They want their rights but do not consider the rights of others.

Who feeds and finances this bunch that does not work and disrupts others from working?

We can stand by and let a bunch of liberals take our freedoms away or speak out about how you feel. Too much has been sacrificed for our freedom to let a bunch that doesn't even know why they are protesting to cause the trouble they are causing.

If they really cared, they would be protesting the wealthy media tycoons in our nation. The law needs to stop this situation before people get hurt.

If the people in Washington would quit worrying about their next golf game or big party bash, maybe they could find time to run the country.

Anpther winnder from shithead Barrett

quote:

Barrett: Occupy slackers want others to repay their student loans

Any lingering hope that the Occupy Wall Street set isn't infested with sloths and slackers can now be pitched without ceremony into the nearest Cuisinart.

Amid OWS' hot denials that it is a magnet for the shiftless, the entitled and the infantilized, it has begun urging a mass heist against taxpayers.

Here is the plan, announced in Manhattan's Zuccotti Park by a branch of OWS with the brazenly lackluster title "Occupy Student Debt":

People who borrowed money to attend college will sign a pledge vowing not to repay their debt. When 1 million people have pledged thus, they will put a fiscal gun to the heads of the American people and, as casually as they might tweet about their choice of granola, pull the trigger: They'll stop paying on their loans.

The precise effect of this action is impossible to know, but it could be devastating. The federal government is responsible for 85 percent of student loans, and student debt is in the neighborhood of $1 trillion. That's more than the American people owe on credit cards.

A flood of deadbeats suddenly overwhelming the system to the point that it cannot effectively collect on student loans would shift at least part of that bill onto taxpayers.

"The theory behind the campaign is that if 1 million students refuse to pay, they would face minimal consequences due to safety in numbers," Inside Higher Ed reports.

But that's the least of it. How many other Americans would understandably conclude that if graduates don't have to repay loans squandered on five or six years of advanced marmalade studies, there's no reason why they should pay off their mortgages, their car loans or that colorful pantsuit from Sears?

Hard as it is to fathom, it's doubtful there are enough bureaucrats even at the Department of Education and the IRS to track down a million student loan-chucking loafers plus millions more who may be inspired to dump sundry other financial obligations.

So we arrive again at the axis of the self-absorbed OWS movement: If they want something, and they can muster the sheer mob force to take it, they will. To heck with what it does to anybody else.

Incapable of, and uninterested in, gaining the intellectual traction or emotional maturity to pull out of the perpetual mosh pit they mistake for reality, they demand a life unencumbered by grown-up responsibilities -- and they will have it, even if it means embracing the tactics of the bailed-out Wall Street miscreants they denounce.

The belief by at least some portion of the Occupy movement that repayment of their loans is the duty of plumbers, waitresses and janitors who never signed up for that borrowing is merely the latest manifestation of that. It merits their dismissal to the sparsely populated ideological netherworld of Michael Moore and Newsweek.

If you've lost Chris Matthews ...

Speaking of sparsely populated netherworlds, I saw a link to a vigorous denunciation of the president by -- wait for it -- Chris Matthews of MSNBC!

"What are we trying to do in this administration?" Matthews ponders in palpable despair. "Why does he want a second term? Would he tell us? What's he going to do in his second term? More of this? Is this it? Is this as good as it gets? Where are we going? Are we going to do something in his second term? He has yet to tell us. He has not said one thing about what he would do in a second term. He never tells us what he's going to do with reforming our health care systems, Medicare, Medicaid. How he's going to reform Social Security. Is he going to deal with long-term debt? How? Is he going to reform the tax system? How?"

All fine questions, Friar Matthews. So far, Obama's plan is:

* Raise taxes on the rich.

* Toss a few hundred billion more smackers down the stimulus rat hole.

That's it. That's the plan. That's the grand design for economic turnaround.

Small wonder the president is now hemorrhaging the support of even the Chris Matthewses of the world.

This one pissed me off from the local paper's right-wing hacks.

quote:

Rejoicing as U.S. troops honorably leave Iraq

We cannot be sure what is going to happen next in Iraq. The U.S.-led invasion and the removal of dictator Saddam Hussein have given the Iraqi people a shot at real freedom -- certainly a better shot at liberty than any that they had under the unspeakable brutality of Saddam.

But there are still sporadic terrorist attacks in Iraq, and the full extent of the disturbing influence of nearby Iran remains to be seen.

So it will take some time before we know whether the formal end of the Iraq War on Thursday was another step on a path toward a peaceful, prosperous Iraq -- or a starting point for more bloodshed once the stabilizing presence of U.S. troops is fully withdrawn before the end of the year.

Nevertheless, whatever uncertainty the future holds, let us all pause to rejoice in the fact that our troops are, after almost nine years of war, honorably departing Iraq.

They have served well and courageously, in exceedingly difficult circumstances. They held up admirably during the toughest, bloodiest times of the Iraq War. And they ultimately proved Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., wrong when he declared in 2007 that the war was lost.

The war was not lost. President George W. Bush had ordered a surge in U.S. troops, and violent attacks dropped dramatically as those troops swung into action.

As a result, today the Iraqi people hold their prospects for peace and freedom in their own hands. Roughly 4,500 American troops made the ultimate sacrifice and thousands more were wounded to provide that marvelous opportunity to the Iraqis.

We hope the people of Iraq make the most of that chance. But if they do not, it will not be the fault of U.S. troops.

We praise the bravery of our men and women in uniform, and we celebrate with them as they honorably withdraw from Iraq.

Here's a winner from my local paper today.

quote:

Obama is a foe of religious freedom

Wiping tears generated by Scripture quoters, false accusations of the biased ill-informed, let's get real.

Barrack Hussein Obama is the No. 1 enemy of religious freedom. He's the most pro-Islam president in history. He refuses to host the traditional White House National Day of Prayer, yet hosted an Iftar dinner honoring Islam and recognized Eid-ul-Fiter and Adha. Obama directed the Department of Justice to stop defending Defense of Marriage enacted by Congress. He allows homosexuals openly in the military, reversing George Washington's (1778) policy. He attempts to control hiring policy of charter schools; forces religious institutions and hospitals to finance contraception and sterilization; ordered Catholic chaplains to cease reading an archbishop letter, etc. Where is red, white and blue in the Oval Office?

The commander-in-chief bows and apologizes to Islamists, who are killing our troops because of allegations Americans burned two Qurans, while Bibles are burned with the trash. Elsewhere, Christians face death under Islamic "blasphemy laws."

Thirty-nine months of Obama have increased gasoline prices 84 percent, crude oil 135.9 percent, corn 78.1 percent, sugar cane 164.7 percent, black unemployment 25.4 percent, food stamp recipients 35.7 percent, long- term unemployment 136.2 percent, national debt in trillions 32.2 percent, and new businesses are at a 30-year low. Our country's broke. You can't fix stupid, but can vote it out!

I was made to learn Darwinism in school and the "theory" that humans evolved from apes. Bible study was an elective for students, if chosen. Christ was never forced on anyone.

Jesus says be angry but sin not ... and I'm angry! Christians should stand up and be "one nation under God." That is our heritage. Last time I checked, those folks from the FFRF are spending money that says "In God We Trust."

If they don't trust in God, don't spend our money. If you don't like this nation under God, make a new nation for yourselves. Freedom from oppression in religion is what founded this country. Even in our courts we are sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you God! Because it means something!

Are they afraid that by using Jesus' name, someone may believe? Possibly! Many already do. Those who don't believe, those who do, are praying for you. You can tell me not to pray, but you will never stop my praying. I'll do it until I die, in Jesus' name! Amen!

Another idiotic Olympic editorial

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/...pinionfreepress

quote:

Devaluing greatness

Today, Gabby Douglas, America’s sweetheart of the London Olympics, competes for the final time in these games. The “Flying Squirrel,” as she is known for her aerial abilities, hopes to add a medal in the individual balance beam final to go with the pair of gold medals she already earned in the individual and team all-around competitions.

Impressively, she is the first American gymnast to win gold in both the individual all-around and team competitions at the same Olympics. Perhaps more remarkably, she is the first black person ever to win the individual all-around gymnastics title in the Olympics.

Sadly, awkward attempts at political correctness actually have understated the magnitude of Douglas’ achievement.

After she captured gold in gymnastics’ highest prize, the individual all-around, NBC’s Bob Costas announced that Douglas was, “the first African-American to win the women’s all-around in gymnastics.”

NBC’s talking hairdo was not incorrect — Douglas is the first African-American to win the women’s all-around in gymnastics. But she’s also the first black person to win gymnastics all-around gold. Period. American or not.

Given the rich history of the modern Olympics, which spans 116 years and 32 Summer Olympic games — and has included tens of thousands of black athletes — being the first black person to accomplish the feat is much more impressive than just being the first black American to do so.

Demographically, it also is extraordinary to be the first black person to win a gold medal in gymnastics all-around. The 2010 U.S. census tallied about 39 million black Americans. That number is dwarfed by the 1.4 billion black people in the entire world, according to an estimate by Clutch, an online magazine.

That means that by calling Douglas the first African-American to win the individual all-around title, instead of the first black person to earn the gold, Bob Costas undersold Douglas’ triumph by 3,500 percent.

Costas was far from the only celebrity or professional yapper to diminish Douglas’ accomplishments by describing her as the “first African-American to …”.

Condoleezza Rice, certainly no stranger to being the answer to trivia questions because of both her skin color and gender, made the same mistake. So did ESPN’s Jemele Hill, herself a black woman.

The Washington Post’s Liz Clarke and “Today Show” contributor Jillian Eugenios also understated the cultural importance of Douglas’ gold by declaring her the first African-American to win the title.

The Daily Beast, CNN.com, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, The Associated Press, the Huffington Post and ABC ran similar stories praising Douglas as being the first African-American Olympic gymnastics champion, rather than giving her the full credit she deserves.

The 16-year-old gymnast is not the first Olympic champion to get short shrift from commentators and columnists tripping over themselves trying not to use the word “black” to describe an athlete.

In 2002, American Vonetta Flowers was called the first African-American athlete to win a Winter Olympic gold medal by Bob Costas and others.

Flowers, who earned her gold medal as part of a two-person women’s bobsled team at the Winter Games in Salt Lake City, wasn’t just the first African-American to win gold in the Winter Olympics. She was the first black person to stand atop the podium in any of the 19 Winter Olympics held to that point.

If a black person in the United States prefers to be called an African-American, fine. No complaints here. Assuming every black person in the world is American, however, is truly ignorant.

No one benefits when political correctness comes at the cost of making a statement incorrect, or devaluing the accomplishments of inspirational history makers.

In order for Gabby Douglas to receive the credit she truly deserves, people like Bob Costas are going to have to realize that her accomplishments are important, not because she’s an African-American, but because she’s black.

Uppity PC thugs.

Voting for Obama doesn't please God

Christians should vote. The choice is between a bad person with some principles (Mitt Romney) and an evil person with no principles (President Obama).

Obama supports taxpayer funding of abortion all nine months, supports same-sex marriage, and is disrespectful to, and unwilling to stand with, Israel. Historian David Barton, who has studied all the past presidents, said, "The hostility of President Obama toward biblical faith and values is without equal from any previous American president!"

Christians vote for the candidate most pleasing to God who will cause God to send the least judgment upon our country. God will hold all Americans accountable for the evil actions of our political leaders. When President Obama said our policy is to divide Jerusalem, seven hours later the city of Joplin, Mo., was destroyed by a tornado. When President Obama declared June "Homosexual Pride Month," a drought started resulting in the highest price for corn and soybeans in history.

President Obama said when he didn't know he was being recorded he would "have more flexibility" after the election. There's reason to believe Obama will do even greater evil after the election!

Voting our Christian faith, convictions and principles is our duty to God and can save lives!

This brilliant piece appeared in my local paper a few days ago.

http://www.timesfreepress.com/news/...?opinioncolumns

quote:

Smith: The Cardinal Zinn of anti-Americanism

Anti-Americanism is often synonymous with the Left. Whether it's the NAACP's hollow rhetoric about the lack of racial justice, the pathetic call from unions for more for government budget-busting pension programs, or Mr. Obama's deafening silence on American exceptionalism, they and their political benefactors never seem able to focus on the goodness of America.

The most "anti" of anti-Americanism, Howard Zinn, died three years ago, but his writings and influence are important to reflect upon as our children start another school year. He was a member of the Communist Party since 1949, and he left a covey of faithful admirers including some of the leading thinkers and historians of our time like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

Celebrity worshipers will reel in horror as they read this. Anyone who knows anything knows that Matt is so-o-o-o hot that he couldn't be a charlatan ... besides, what's a charlatan? And Willie, how dare me vilify Willie with his star spangled headband holding his long gray pig tails in place? Yep, they all held up Mr. Zinn as a "hero of the people." He made them giddy with his "stick it to the man" philosophy (whoever the man is), and his book "A People's History of the United States" (2.2 million copies) is their Zinn Bible. In it Mr. Zinn writes, "The American system is the most ingenious system of control in world history." He calls for wealth redistribution to the masses so everything will be "free -- to everyone: food, housing, health care, education, transportation."

It's easy to dismiss such kooky ideas by wealthy elitists, but the concern is that such Zinnful thoughts have crept into our classrooms from liberal educators who subscribe to revisionist American history. They conveniently overlook thousands of indentured servants who came from the Old World to the New World in search of opportunities to work and worship and escape the heavy yoke of tyranny.

They neglect our Founding Fathers who put both their lives and honor on the line to pen their names to our Declaration of Independence. They ignore Horatio Alger stories that still abound in this country about poor people who rolled up their sleeves and used their God-given talents to "make it." Likewise, they overlook the contributions of folks who have made it in giving jobs and opportunities to tens of thousands of employees because of their success. You know the stories: Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Normandy, Henry Ford, the Wright Brothers, Silicon Valley -- all remarkable records of successful Americans. Were they duped and under the control of the mythological "man"? I think not. Our children deserve to know about the real sacrifices and accomplishments of their countrymen; otherwise, as Cicero said, "Not to know what happened before you were born is to be forever a child."

How does the rest of the world view our opportunities? Despite what Mr. Zinn believed, our embassies are overwhelmed with people trying to immigrate to the United States. During my career in the United States Air Force, I spent four overseas assignments in Iceland, Germany, Japan, and Greece. All are progressive countries politically, technologically, and environmentally; yet, none enjoy the freedoms and opportunities we take for granted. If you are born poor, chances are almost certain that you will die poor, and if you are born rich, you will die rich, even if you are an incompetent buffoon. I witnessed first-hand the old expression, "Yankee go home ... but take me with you!"

A great country like ours must permit the free debate of ideas and opinions, but we must also remember the worth of an opinion is only as good as the facts upon which it is based. Mr. Zinn's facts and those of his revisionist liberal disciples are woefully inaccurate, divisive, and misleading. Our children deserve better.
