Hey, er, could Zorak or Winson rename my FAE JoJo thread and add "(Recruitment/OOC)" to the end of the title? It got a little unwieldy in the signup phase (and would get even more unwieldy if I don't split it) and I want to make another thread for the actual game.

Ooo, Coronet City Homicide just brought crane operation into the mix.

I work at a crane training/certification institute and I handle them at least two days a month, particularly boom trucks and 45 ton mobile cranes; just today I packed up a truck-mounted telescopic boom crane before practical exams tomorrow. I'm hoping everything gets portrayed well.

It's a Star Wars roleplaying game. It's a space elfgame. If you are looking at it expecting full accuracy about your menial job's minor rituals and small items, you are a) really overshooting it and b) being the kind of "realism" idiot no one wants to play with.

Dude, the only thing I was expecting was that the GM wouldn't make boneheaded decisions and would treat the subject matter as well as he's treated the rest of the material in his game.

But seriously, "menial job"? More than just being insulting, you clearly don't know what you're talking about.

"Treat the subject matter as well as he's treated everything else." Cranes are not space elves, I am not sure how hard this is to understand. Unless the game turns out to be a hidden ad for an iOS crane simulator, the crane is window dressing.

But then again, it's not very surprising you can't separate the two, since your own super-realistic misery porn recruit (missing rules for cranes, you may want to go back and fix this obvious, essential gap) included a gunplay house rule solely to reinforce racist stereotypes of black youth. I guess cranes and fantasy are the same thing to you, after all.

Wait, something is wrong.
Hi if the Peanut Gallery could roll back the personal attacks it would be great. Having worked some construction and a lot of warehouse work in my callow youth, I will suggest crane operation is a fairly skilled profession and calling it menial is out of line. That said, unless it is Bob the Builder's RPG I doubt you need more than a skill roll to do whatever it is that is needed with a crane. I would imagine Star Wars would have repulsor cranes or some poo poo.

Anyhoo, stop being jerks.

....wait, what?

What the hell is this even talking about?

Edit: Do you mean the Gangsta Style rule? That's a rule taken from a pulp sourcebook related to the Chinese horizontal firing technique for the Mauser C96 with a common modern slang term attached.

...Friendship? Again?
Yeah, but within the vernacular it can be construed as a dig at certain cultures (i.e. the racial stereotype of a gangbanger with saggy jeans and gold chains, your typical "gangsta") wielding a pistol that is NOT a Mauser C96 sideways.

It's arguable that it's a suitable pop culture term to describe the maneuver, and it's arguable that it's racist as all hell. And I'm not gonna weigh in one way or the other on that, because hosed if I'm taking sides in an Internet argument about race.

However, chitoryu12, I will say that between your insistence of cranes being handled well and the sheer cruft in your GURPS game (which I do feel was aptly described as misery porn,) you're starting to come off as a massive :spergin:. I'd advise quitting while you're ahead lest some enterprising poster stick you in grogs.txt.

I should also point out that in the GURPS Tactical Shooting handbook, there's its own rule titled "Gangsta Shooting" which is a similar rule that lacks the stat changes like lowering the Bulk of the gun.

Also, I should explain that when discussing typical subsets of criminals, I usually use "gangsta" or "gangbanger" to describe the style of modern street thugs and "gangster" more for the mobster archetype, especially 20s or 30s style. I debated with which vernacular to use a few years ago when actually giving it some thought, and figured that most people would think of the classic pinstripe suited Italian with a Thompson when a "gangster" is mentioned.

I don't get this whole "misery porn" thing. Is it the optional rules? If so, almost identical sets of rules are used in non-horror GURPS games with a similar focus on detail and realism. Is it my emphasis that inter-party conflict isn't discouraged and that morally gray actions have to be taken and human-on-human conflict is going to be a bigger part instead of just fighting zombies all the time? Because that doesn't fit "misery porn" either just by itself.

The game's barely even started anyway, so I don't get how people seem to think that they have a solid enough understanding of its tone and content to criticize it when we're still on the first page and the world is still effectively normal. What I can say is that, while it's not a campaign geared toward a sensitive audience, it's not going to be gratuitous: excessive gore, rape, and child death aspects are intentionally being kept out, and the world isn't filled with sociopaths that slaughter their way to the top; if anything, sociopathic behavior would probably be punished in-universe more than rewarded. With how I've planned out the game so far, it's likely to be less miserable and have fewer senseless deaths and crazy sociopaths than your average season of The Walking Dead.

Edit: I think my main point is that the game is being judged way, way too early. The recruitment thread's content doesn't really tell the player anything beyond "This is a zombie apocalypse game on the hard realism side of the difficulty scale. There's difficult moral choices to make, party members will probably disagree and fight, and PCs will die if they don't play smart." And the IC thread itself has literally nothing beyond the initial PC characterization finished so far.

It's pretty much impossible to judge the actual tone of the game at the point where it's at, and I've planned enough to confidently say that the "misery porn" prediction is really off the mark. It's like trying to judge the tone of Supernatural by watching the first 5 minutes.

Sorry for Party Flocking
I read Captain Foo's Apocalypse World game, the Island, and it's really interesting. It's one of the first games I've seen where splitting the group wasn't a death sentence for the thing. It also placed characters on opposing sides of a conflict without meta-game disaster. This is largely because of how cool AW handles things, and a good part due to Foo's well done juggling of multiple narratives. There's some initial hiccups with a character that doesn't really fit the goings-on, but that gets ironed out.

Good read, looking forward to more.

It is easier to manage split parties and such in PBP by virtue of not having to give immediate, real time feedback. I can post a post that covers five PCs in one update if needs be no matter where they are; in person I have one mouth to talk at any one person with so the rest of the party gets to sit around using their thumbs for fart corks if there is an extended split.
