They're not effective, everyone on the drat planet knows smoking is bad for you. They're going for shock value at best, and at worst they're throwaway ads financed by the tobacco companies themselves because politicians like to think they're somehow doing good, following that dumbfuck "if it saves just one life..." mentality while happily taking billions upon billions of tax money from tobacco sales.

Moreover, what in blue hell is funny about them?

My favorite one of the texting and driving ads is the one where it was "This is the text I sent my sister". Like, I understand the one with the guy with brain damage, and the one when the girl who got a text from someone as their car crashed, but making it "I texted my sister while she was driving" is a bit weird, because that person has no obligation to check the text while driving. It just seems weird to me.

There was actually a court case about that somewhat recently. It was about whether or not you could be prosecuted for sending a text to someone who was driving. Of course, that's ridiculous, and it got thrown out for that reason.

That commercial definitely sucks, though, because it places the blame on the person who sent the text rather than the person who read the text in their car. Yeah, that'll solve the problem.

Guys the point of that specific commercial is to make people aware of the reality that taking your eyes off of the road even to read a text message can be deadly. And it would probably be pretty hard to get the girl who died to tell people that.

I guess I'm kind of glad that texting and driving is getting the same attention as drinking and driving, or not doing meth or smoking cigarettes.

The commercials may be annoying but they raise awareness. I teach in a small rural community and we had a former graduate die because she was checking a text and her car was hit by a train (it was one of those stops that doesn't have the bars that come down). It led to a fairly extensive "X the Text" campaign at our school.

Honestly, working with teenagers, repetition is good for them.

I understand the message, and I think the commercials are doing a really good job of getting it across. I don't mind them, really. It's just that one that seemed odd to me. It sounded less like "Don't check your texts while you're driving" and more like "Don't text someone that is driving" to me, is all. I honestly don't even hate the commercials, I just find that specific one to not get the message across as well.

This is my stance on it. They're unnecessary advertisements. The ones that actually care about what tar inhalation can do to the body already don't smoke. Perhaps I'm wrong and there are a few outliers that have quit smoking after viewing these ads, but I'm not optimistic. Smokers won't quit smoking after seeing those things because they'll just go, "WELL, THAT WON'T HAPPEN TO ME!" and then throw a table and be on their way. Shock value just spites people rather than give them incentive to quit.

But I do agree that, while annoying as hell, the "texting while driving" commercials do raise awareness to some degree. I go nuts when I see people texting and driving because it's so drat unsafe.

What is so shocking about those ads? They are rather dryly stating the facts of their lives, not rubbing your face in how gross they are or like showing pictures of cancerous lung. And is it so hard to believe that the people who made the ads actually want to prevent people from smoking? Yes, there is hosed up stuff surrounding tobacco law in this country, but the CDC isn't exactly in the middle of all that.

Commercial doesn't make a lot of sense, and I get that AT&T wants you to feel so close to being lost in the music. Either way, he needs to feel so close to a bus that runs a stop sign.

Part of the reason for them using those songs is because people who have kids in school now were kids in the 80's. Using a lovely cover/ripoff for commercials is nothing new, but some genius somewhere went "wait, demographic says the majority of these parents were in elementary school in the late 80's and would know these songs!"
