There's a Chevy Silverado ad running where the guy is trying to find a place where he can't get a cell phone signal that's beyond annoying.

Um, you could just TURN THE loving PHONE OFF!

After seeing another one of those Western Sky loan ads, I decided to look them up.

If you borrow $5000, you'll end up paying over $40,000 back.

Isn't that if you hold the loan for like a year or longer though? I thought most of these places were intending them as short-term.

According to their site, the $5k loan has a payback schedule of 84 payments of $486.58. I suppose you could pay it off earlier, but I imagine more than a few people wouldn't.

What is with those commercials? They show all the time for a few months and then they disappear for like 5 years or whenever the next video format comes out. Aside from them showing VHS tapes / DVDs / HD-DVDs / Blu-Rays in the commercial, it's been like the same commercial for the last 15 years or so.

The commercial doesn't seem to say it, but I believe the restoration was done by Legend Films. The fine folks who give us Rifftrax.

Ever wish you had sonic hearing?

quote:

1. Of or relating to audible sound: a sonic wave.
2. Having a speed approaching or being that of sound in air, about 1,220 kilometers (760 miles) per hour at sea level.
3. Slang Extremely exciting and fast-paced: a sonic lifestyle.

So, Micro Plus will allow me to have hearing at the speed of sound? Or will it give me extremely exciting and fast-placed hearing?

Just caught an ad for Selldvdsonline.com, a company that buys DVDs & CDs.

I went to their website and you have to enter the UPC code and they'll make you an offer. I put in the UPC code for my Criterion Robocop.

The offer? Ten cents.

Then I put in the MST3K Volume 10 (the original with the now-discontinued Godzilla vs Megalon). They offered $7.80.

Yeah, I'm gonna pass.

You're off by a factor of 10. The payback would be about $40k (84 pmts @$486.58 according to their website). The idea, I'm guessing, is that you don't take that long to pay it back.

I'm surprised some consumer advocate group hasn't tested them out. I seem to recall there being a blurb about no penalty for early payback.

poo poo, I thought I misplaced a decimal or something. But yeah, I guess technically it's not illegal if there's both an extensive repayment period and no penalty for early repayment. Still pretty drat expensive, I can't really imagine non-exploitative situations where someone would need $5k "tomorrow" that badly and could also afford to pay off substantially more than $500 a month thereafter.

It would have to be an extreme situation like you were being foreclosed on and have to come up with big money quickly.

Or you really suck at managing your credit and the creditors are breathing down your neck.
