rocks they were always the most perchy touchy-feely chooks in my flock, they're gorgeous. the weirdest ones were araucanas. strange, strange little polygonal blue birds.

quail roosters are so bizarre, they're so gentle and nurturing of their hens until they get seized by the sudden irresistable urge to mate and then they just transform into these barbaric mindless engines of gently caress who will stop at nothing until they're satisfied. then as soon as penetration has taken place they turn back into their usual sweet selves (until the next time)

i love them too they're just so stupid and it's not their fault here is hot chip preparing for take off, which i didn't realise was what she was doing until approximately 1.5 seconds after i took the photo. incidentally, today i got to meet some new neighbours! i also confirmed that only one adjacent yard is certain death (dog) which is much better than the last place i lived in. hot chip managed to not land in the death yard, she is home safe, and the completely stoned teenage boy who got to see me fish her out of the undergrowth in his backyard seemed charmed and delighted by the experience

roosters (all species) have this beautiful thing where if they find their hen something delicious and she's obviously pleased with it, as she's eating it they will leap upon her. it's just so emotionally transparent and i respect them for it

CROWS EVERYWHERE posted:Their ancestors were very good at surviving in the jungles of south Asia and are very smart when faced with the kinds of challenges you'd face there. We also spent a few thousand years breeding them to be plump and placid and completely lacking in self-preservation skills around humans and our other animal friends (dogs, cats, horses, babies) while being relatively self-sufficient when in large groups. They are simultaneously smarter than you'd expect and dumber than you'd expect. They're very good at doing things important to chickens. the cleverest poultry would probably have to be peafowl. someone told me turkeys are pretty smart too. are ducks and geese smarter than chickens? guinea fowl are even more extreme in being smart when it comes to pure survival skills but randomly the stupidest organism on earth when confronted with what seem like very basic challenges. mine couldn't figure out how to negotiate a waist-high fence. the chickens just popped straight over the top, but the guineas, who can fly, just ran back and forth and back and forth and back and forth clanking hysterically for hours quail are... they're quail
