they were always the most perchy touchy-feely chooks in my flock, they're gorgeous. the weirdest ones were araucanas. strange, strange little polygonal blue birds.

I've tried to get my hens to eat mice. I've caught them sunbathing while mice walk I physical in contact with their wings. :(

I've been given advice to skin a live mouse in front of them by my stepfather (who is an animal surgeon, specialising in horses though), in order to show them that when popped, they give food, and while I'm pretty sure that would work, I can't be bothered to catch one in order to do it.

I dunno. Gonna have to work the effort angles on this one.
don't skin a live mouse, that sounds horrific. buy some frozen pinkie mice from the pet shop or whatever and toss them to the hens with their next meal, they'll figure it out

quail roosters are so bizarre, they're so gentle and nurturing of their hens until they get seized by the sudden irresistable urge to mate and then they just transform into these barbaric mindless engines of gently caress who will stop at nothing until they're satisfied. then as soon as penetration has taken place they turn back into their usual sweet selves (until the next time)

here is hot chip preparing for take off, which i didn't realise was what she was doing until approximately 1.5 seconds after i took the photo. incidentally, today i got to meet some new neighbours! i also confirmed that only one adjacent yard is certain death (dog) which is much better than the last place i lived in. hot chip managed to not land in the death yard, she is home safe, and the completely stoned teenage boy who got to see me fish her out of the undergrowth in his backyard seemed charmed and delighted by the experience

I would report anybody NOT charmed and delighted immediately, and who needs that sort of confrontation. You dodged a bullet there to be honest.
strangers are always a bit wary when i show up on their doorstep saying my quail is in their back yard, but it turns out most people have never seen a quail before and responses to the actual bird (when/if i find them) are always 100% positive

stoned teenage boy was the best though, he guffawed and went "phwoar that's amazing!"

i hope you find a better place soon. neighbours that can't tolerate your pets make life miserable. i'd love to get chickens and especially love to get guinea fowl, but i know i'm stretching it with quail that occasionally pop over the fence. i really wish i could buy acreage, an acre is all i would need, but that is so far out of reach lol

CROWS EVERYWHERE posted:

Their ancestors were very good at surviving in the jungles of south Asia and are very smart when faced with the kinds of challenges you'd face there. We also spent a few thousand years breeding them to be plump and placid and completely lacking in self-preservation skills around humans and our other animal friends (dogs, cats, horses, babies) while being relatively self-sufficient when in large groups. They are simultaneously smarter than you'd expect and dumber than you'd expect. They're very good at doing things important to chickens.
this is a perfect summary lol

the cleverest poultry would probably have to be peafowl. someone told me turkeys are pretty smart too. are ducks and geese smarter than chickens?

guinea fowl are even more extreme in being smart when it comes to pure survival skills but randomly the stupidest organism on earth when confronted with what seem like very basic challenges. mine couldn't figure out how to negotiate a waist-high fence. the chickens just popped straight over the top, but the guineas, who can fly, just ran back and forth and back and forth and back and forth clanking hysterically for hours

To be fair, much of what I see as chicken dumbness comes down to the language barrier.
back when i first got chickens, i was having trouble befriending them so i googled "how to tame chicken" and the advice i got was to imitate their noises so they think you're one of them. i thought this was ridiculous but then i tried it and it worked. a few years later, when i was trying to hand-tame my quail and they weren't having it, i remembered that advice and started going "bip bip prill bibbit" at them whenever i handled them, and the positive effect was instantaneous, they were just straight away like "oh! friend" and went from being terrified of me to following me around the garden and jumping into my hands

Oh I bawk bawk at my chickens every day and like you say they go from suspicious to "oh yeah you are food god what's up", if only I could figure out what "stop jumping on top of the coop and stop trying to get over the fence in the neighbor's yard" is in bawks, clucks or trills. Oh and "stop digging up the rocks I laid out to deter rats".
the best thing was occasionally i would bopplechop at them and they'd all jump and stare at me in clear indignation and dismay, i can only imagine what horribly offensive thing i'd accidentally said to them in chickenspeak
