good article, unfortunately a lot of what he's saying is spot on. I get that QC is kind of an endeavor but the stuff with the inner sleeves now, christ, that absolutely is a problem. I go through a lot of those anti-static inner sleeves because like 75% of new records have those thick and tight glossy ones. you get the impression that the people who make these don't anticipate most buyers even listening to the record. maybe they're right! but I do and the lack of QC all around sucks. in particular the non-fill drives me nuts. I actually don't think I've ever heard non-fill on a record pressed in the 60s, 70s, or 80s. but you hear it all the time now.

obviously you can just return defective records but I talked to the local record shop guy about this and he confirmed that they usually just have to eat the cost, as a lot of labels won't accept returns, or make it so much of a hassle that it's not worth doing. the trick I've learned (maybe from this thread!) is to just order a copy from Amazon that offers free returns, and return to them the defective one. probably a bit unscrupulous but my morals get all jumbled up when dealing with predatory companies like Amazon. a lot of times the replacement copy is fine, though there have been times when you get one that's even worse, and every time I wind up wondering why I even do this? oh well. maybe it'll get better one day :)

The thing is I agree with everything he's saying, it's just that he's extremely annoying and the way he writes about it is what the kids would call "cringe". All that stuff he's saying is poo poo I regularly bitch about in this thread.

Touched Fuzzy, Got Dizzy
I spent way too long listening to records without using one of those brushes to clean them up before play. Records I thought were pretty bad sounding or had a skip just needed the slightest amount of brushing off crud to sound way better.

One of those tips that’s incredibly obvious in retrospect that I had somehow glossed over.

I AM ALL I AM NONE
I usually use a dry brush and an anti static gun before plays. If the record is too dirty for the little brush I’ll wet clean it. I’ll clean the needle every few plays too.

I’ve had non-fill issues a few times but it hasn’t been a huge problem. Maybe somewhere around 1/100 on new records. No problems on records pressed in the 80s or earlier

Non-fill is more common nowadays because records tend to be heavier and thicker than they were in the past.

I know a couple of our local shops won't take returns, even on new records. I think LITA and some other online stores won't take returns unless something is really messed up. They tried to deny a return on a super warped record for me since they couldn't hear an audible defect in the video I sent them . Kinda wild. They did eventually replace the record when I mentioned I had been a loyal customer for years and that we were all discussing the issue on multiple forums. At least one in five new records is noticeably warped. Most of the time it doesn't effect the audio but watching my stylus ride those waves is kinda nerve-wracking. Also. Almost all warping on older records that I have seen is due to obvious heat damage or improper storage, not manufacturing defects.

I ended up buying a record clamp because of how many new LPs are concave. A while back I got a Discreet Music reissue from a five dollar sale on uDiscover (I think). It was just awful. So I sent them an email and got a free return label and sent it back. A second copy comes and it's exactly the same. I email them again and they just send another copy without even asking for the other one back. The third copy comes and it's the same problem so I just gave up.

It would've helped if I'd scrolled down to the US colored ones (the EU ones / US black look to be the problematic culprit).

Thanks! Ordered the blue from Rough Trade.

Honestly? I don't know yet, I've not had much chance to listen to it so far, although I quite like Hutt. From an initial couple of listens its more of the same, which is good I guess if you liked the first album. Nothing is blowing me away like Aaj but that's a very high bar to aim for.

In related news, my mate got their copy and it looks awful. For comparison my copy looks like this;

And theirs doesn't have the same orange hint, but baby vomit;

Obviously there's going to be some variation in colour but that seems pretty drastic. The vinyl is supposed to be a similar colour of orange as the cover which mine is, but my mate's is nowhere near. They've taken to calling it their Melted Crayons Vinyl.

Some albums I picked up from concerts last year:

Idles was the most fun but Conan was the best (concerts and these records specifically).
Too bad Metz didn't have some of their older albums.
Tomb Mold is just as technically brilliant live.

Obviously if Herb Alpert (*edit was on tour!) I'd post that album everyone has.

Got the Target edition with bonus track, both CD and vinyl for $40 shipped on eBay. I really liked Abracadabra and Killah on SNL and her performances (particularly the latter) were, uh, killer enough to make me wanna check out the album, which feels like the first time in a couple decades that that's happened with a MG on the show.

Hey! I at least played it, which is more than you can say about most copies out there.

It's a bop (shocker!) 15 songs, three sides, five each side, fourth is etching. Side C is calmest, so the club kids know they can skip it. My old rear end welcomed the slowdown.

This upcoming RSD release list is extremely underwhelming. I look at some of this stuff and wonder who is buying all this crap?

I went to my local record store yesterday and they were kind enough to let me know that I could get up to 8 releases next weekend without having to go back through the line (since I am a club member or whatever). I looked through the list and can see like maybe 1 or 2 albums I'd pick up.
