When I ordered that Joy Division singles box set from Rhino, they didn't let me specify dollars, so you have to pay the converted price from British Pounds, which, in this case, comes out to over 500 dollars with shipping. Which is a good reason. Unless you're in the UK, in which case I don't know what to tell you.

They are pretty affordable too, even for thousands. If you meant getting it off, bare minimum a wipe with a lintless rag and a carbon brush before each play. edit: The locking poly bags make the spines almost impossible to read unfortunately! Carbon fiber brush - if you don't have one, get one now. I religiously brush every record before play. I even wipe brand new records to remove static. http://www.amazon.com/AudioQuest-Anti-Static-record-cleaner-brush/dp/B0006VMBHI Also, unless you're a scratch DJ, never play your records on a turntable that doesn't have a dustcover. Wilbur Swain posted:How much dust can settle on a turntable without a dust cover? Where does that dust go when you put a staticky record on it? If you leave your slip mat exposed all the time, the side you don't play first gets insta-dusty. I guess if you don't have a dustcover, the alternative is to take off your slip mat when you're not playing a record and bag it. But still - in my old rear end house there's tons of dust and on the play side it will start collecting it like a magnet.

My dust cover gets HELLA dusty after just a couple of days. Add to that the fact that it's summer and I have a cat, and it's just a dusty hairy mess. Dust covers are good things, and a dust-free turntable is a happy turntable.

Socket Ryanist posted:Does anyone have a good solution for keeping dust off records? Carbon fiber brush as others said. Plus it's a good idea to have anti-static inner sleeves (Mobile Fidelity makes a really nice static free inner that's inexpensive) and a good outer sleeve as well. Paper sleeves are garbage because they create all kinds of debris, often cause static, and can be abrasive. CPL593H fucked around with this message at 01:03 on Jul 29, 2011 |

You're honestly probably not going to get much better than that for something than isn't a PoS that you can't swap the stock cartridge on. If you were to go used you'd have some better options.

I have to wonder about the circumstances when I happen to see an enormous collection of brand new vinyl collections at Goodwill. Nobody would just dump off four boxes of new electronica/house/punk - I have to assume someone got evicted, it's stolen, or someone's girlfriend knew how to really hurt them. Either way, I took a chance on a few albums, and picked up some really pristine albums at a Goodwill in Baltimore. Some I recognize (Audio Bullys), and some I don't (Sumo, Voom: Voom, and so on).

It's a real rush though, right? I love finding big collections, it's just a little painful when they're asking too much even though you know they have no idea what they've got. My favorite time like that was when I found an old Hasidic run thrift shop in Brooklyn that had somehow acquired what must have been the remnants of a record store from the 70s. There were thousands of 45s, multiples of a lot of em, funk, soul, early funky disco. I was pretty poor otherwise I would have bought them all, but I had to act fast because you could see other record collectors drifting in and seeing the same thing. I snatched up around 400 of them, and got some good stuff like Skull Snaps - It's a New Day, which contains one of the most famous beats in hip hop sampling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP40rWs3g2M I used to have fairly frequent dreams about finding vinyl jackpots like that.

It is, especially considering thrift stores only seem to have the following any more: - Showtunes - Holiday Albums - Albums by people like Ray Conniff - Bad albums by actors like the guy who played Gomer Pyle - Streisand/Elton John/Sinatra/Village People/mass-produced albums that are just beat to hell Really, I feel like a lot of thrift stores must be turning away big vinyl donations that look like mostly junk, because it seems like they're paring down what stuff they do have. I swear, the average record pile in thrift stores in smaller than it was a few years ago. On one hand, I dig that, because it's less junk to go through, but then, you might miss out on a few gems. Still, I can't fault a store for throwing away frayed albums of scratched up records that have been sitting for a few years.

Yeah, I agree, the heyday of abundant cheap used vinyl seems to have passed.
