I'm tempted to write this in all caps but:

That record player is raping the living poo poo out of your records. Buy something decent as soon as possible and don't play anything until then.

e: Nice collection though, props.

Thankfully I don't play records too often, mainly for the reason that I don't quite trust that player. Looks like I was right. I've only played a handful of albums on that thing more than once, and haven't really used it in months. I'll go look around at yard sales/thrift shops and see if I can find a decent turntable in the near future.

There is a dude on eBay selling them for like $24 (excluding postage) which sounded like a steal to me.

Thank you for taking my advice as constructive criticism which it was intended to be and not getting upset as some people have in the past when I pointed out they own a bulk record eraser.

If you find anything you like be sure to post them in this thread and the vintage 2 channel thread so we can help you choose your setup!

The funny thing is the poo poo sound of those plug-in portables tends to make 45s sound killer. To the point where I hear them on a hi-fi I get kind of disappointed. Without that blown-out sound they lose some of the energy.

I think I have the same cover as you, with the MR2D (ii) disc, if I figured it out correctly. The disc is in great shape, however the jacket is a bit beat up, and someone faked the Beatles' signatures on the back in pen. Either someone trying to show off to their friends or someone trying to rip someone off, though the faked sigs aren't great. So that brings down the value of the jacket quite a bit, I'm sure.

No reason to get mad, you pointed something I should know, and I'm glad I do now. I'm going to look at some thrift stores in the area, see if they have any decent, real players hanging around. They usually seem to be inexpensive at places like that. We have speakers here, just need to make sure I get a player with the correct inputs for them, since they aren't the plug-in type, but the type with the exposed wires that clip in to the player and speakers (not sure what to call those types).

Can anyone tell me a little more about this copy of The Beach Boys' Smile I found? The record label is Sea of Tunes, which I found out was run by the Wilson's father until he sold it in the late 60s. The copyright on the vinyl's label says Surfin' Records 1971, but there are little bits written on the back of the jacket about each song, and it mentions dates as late as 1993. There is no Capital Records logo on the cover, and above the title it says 'New Improved Full Dimensional Stereo'. It's just a plain black vinyl rather than one of the colored ones they apparently came out with. Anyone have any insight into when this came out, where it was made, etc?

Smile was never released as an album until Brian Wilson's CD release a few years ago (and also the recent one with the Beach Boys).

This is a bootleg.

I can't tell exactly which bootleg version this is, as there are a handful and I don't own any of them, but they range in quality. Some essentially ripped the tracks off the Good Vibrations box set, and some bootlegs (also) contain stuff that did slip out of the studios. Sea of Tunes is the most popular "label" for the bootlegs and once upon a time, the CD releases went for a good amount of money, but those were even the pre-original Napster days.

Back to Smile itself, the promotional art of the cover was released in the 1960s as well as a few articles hyping it. Smile stuff in various forms made it onto some albums over the next few years - Smiley Smile, 20/20, Sunflower, Surf's Up - but other than that, none of the original stuff never saw an official release until Capitol's Good Vibrations box set in the 1990s.

Here's some stuff on Sea of Tunes, the publishing company started by Murry Wilson.

I figured it was a bootleg of some kind, but I wasn't sure if the Sea of Tunes that put this out was associated with the original, or something else. Seems like it was started up in the late-90s to make bootlegs. I knew Smile was never released as a whole album up until recently, which is also why I was intrigued by this one I found. It looked a little too used to be related to the new release, and a little too unofficial I guess. I didn't pay much at all for it, so I'm not sweating that part of it. Just interested in its origins, especially since the little notes on the back with each song seem like they came from someone more involved than just some dude(s) going through a bunch of tapes.

I'm not really into bootlegs at all, but it's pretty common to release them on one-off "labels." We had a Pearl Jam one come through at work put out by "Suck My Dick." Some artists police eBay for them (hi Vinent Gallo & bootleg Brown Bunny LP soundtrack) and some have better things to do. I'm hoping one I've come across that goes for decent money slips through undetected.

As far as I know, slipmats are pretty much for cueing and beatmatching while DJing. I've never had one on any of my turntables over the last 20 years.

I'd go with rubber. Felt creates a lot of static and that makes dust and poo poo stick to the records.

They used to be put out in magazines and such (maybe they still are?). They're flexible and cheap, and it's not as if they sound brilliant anyway. I mean, replace your stylus by all means, but I don't think you need to worry about loving them up too badly. Certainly not more than you'd worry about your proper records, at least. :)
