Some rad stuff I picked up recently. Beserkley comp and the Mothers of Invention comp were found at a thrift store for a buck each (!). The Beserkley comp has 4 Jonathan Richman songs/covers I hadn't heard before. Kill Rockstars comp is probably the worst out of the trilogy (B-side opens with Rancid??) but it has a different mix of a Smog song which is rad. The rest of the stuff was picked up at the DC record fair this weekend where I tried not to spend too much money. I'm stoked to finally get the Pre-Moon Syndrome record. A bunch of awesome bands are on there (Pagans, Unrest, Velocity Girl, [the better] The Go Team, Lungfish, etc).

drat that Pre-Moon comp looks great.

I've spent good money on the few boots I have. One of them happens to be Joy Division too, hah.

What's your 'here's why I listen to vinyl' album of choice? The one that (to you) perfectly exemplifies and shows off your system in ways you're most proud?

I think at the moment anyway mine would be Eric Clapton Unplugged. There's so much going on and so much 'breathing room' with crisp highs and tight but not boomy bass, works great.

What records have you guys bought that are now exploded in value? I bought Passion Pit - Manners for $15 when it came out and now I see that its selling on Discogs for $200. Just recently I bought the Haim - Forever single for $8 and now it goes for $100+. I don't really sell records but its still fun to see.

Thank You by Psychic TV. Bought it for like $15 I think now it goes from $50 to $150 on Discogs. It came with an awesome patch but I'm afraid to take it off the cover and lower the value. Ha.

Also M B V finally came and I'm blissing out before work

Here are somme of my cooler tapes. Tape collecting is fun! Especially if you are a metal, industrial, or rap fan. Going to Goodwill and getting some sensitive boy from 1996's mixtape is exciting. Sometimes you can actually get history. Take for instance the Ten Wanted Men tape in the picture below. Its just a promo tape for a obscure rap group, but its a piece of Memphis rap history. Same with the TG tape. That Final Solution tape is just a repress of a noise demo from the early 90s. It was limited to 100 and sold out with in a few days. It tripled in price (to $15)! They also sound cool. Play a CrO2 tape on the "Metal" setting. Or an 80s pop tape that was left in a moldy basement for a decade and is half decayed. So gently caress off with the tape hate you nerds

That is a very pretty haul and I'm surprised to see anyone outside of Portland buying a hunches record. I've passed up on that Housemartins record at least once now for some stupid reason.

I've got a lead on a huge selection of Dance Mania records and I am reaaaally hoping no one decimated it while I was working over the weekend.

My current self took my 16 year old's music preference and applied it to modern day. This format is weird, as it's 3 10" records, all translucent red. And say what you want, but for a 16 year old boy who really liked rock bands and electronic music, this soundtrack was awesome at the time:

It's worth mentioning that the person who created this soundtrack used the same technique for an earlier movie and soundtrack: Judgement Night. That time, they combined rock and rap (before that genre really appeared). What that means is that you got awesome things like Slayer and Ice-T, or my personal favorite, Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul. Listen to this song and try not to be happy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6rxsp82OvM

Ha! I saw that yesterday, but no way was I spending 25 bucks on it. I also saw the Blade II soundtrack which had a similar gimmick but it was like Moby with Mystikal and Paul Oakenfold with Ice Cube.

I did get some nice stuff though. Here are the 7"s

Very happy to have one of my favorites for a reasonable price.

And another favorite (the instrumental pitched down like 30% is beautiful)

Almost bought a pair of La Scalas but decided the cabinets were in too bad shape to manage w/ refinishing. I really don't want to have to deal with relaminating, never done it before and would hate to gently caress it up. Odds are really, really low a decent pair will ever show up near me though.

Does anyone know if there's any really good record stores in Portland, OR? I'm in town at the moment and have Monday and Tuesday to explore. Preferably somewhere that specialises in used albums (a good prog selection also appreciated). I have already been to the Jackpot Records downtown.

Crossroads on 35th and Hawthorne in SE is great, tons of different vendors with varying prices and selections. Just up the street is Exiled on 47th and hawthorne. Goof selection of weirder stuff, but they can be pricey. On 34th and Belmont theres a new place that i cant remember the name of that shows promise. They have a looot of rare stuff too. Everyday Music has two locations, one downtown on Burnside (I can't remember the cross street, sorry) and one on 20th and Sandy. Very hit and miss, but they get so much poo poo that its a different selection everyday. I've heard good things about Future Shock on E Burnside and 20th (a few blocks from Everyday on Sandy), but I haven't gone in yet. NE and north have a lot of stores but that's not really my hood so I can't really say much besides check out Mississippi Records.

Oh and if you like punk and hardcore check out Discourage on 14th and Morrison in SE, lots and lots of rare stuff there for reasonable prices.

This reminded me of something that is only tangentially related but I already typed it before remembering what thread this was so what the hell:
Back in the day the local postal service had a product called äänikirje (lit. sound letter) that was just a blank C cassette and a padded envelope. I recorded one and sent it to my sister who was working at the Finnish culture centre, under the foreign ministry but not a diplomat of any kind, in St. Petersburg (meaning this was post-Soviet times) and she only got it two or three months later with the envelope very badly resealed and the tape was just static with the occasional faint sound of my voice.

Anyway, that's an awesome find, especially since it looks like a 'real' record instead of some flimsy cardboard piece-of-poo poo with wax coating.

That is beautiful. I'd love to hear it if it still exists

Every normal person uses the kallax and/or milk crates. I use an old magazine holder for what I'm currently or about to spin though

I'm not sure what you're all so butthurt about here. It's a simple piece of furniture in the specific style that I want that will fit in the space that I have and not look like I dragged it out of a dumpster. $250 is not some huge price to pay for that. If you legitimately think that's overpaying, feel free to steer me in the direction of the same product yet cheaper or better.

Sorry if I'm not buying into whatever aesthetic or life philosophy I should by clicking buy it now on the internet on some shiny new thing.
