I'm looking to lighten up my collection by a couple thousand records and I'm trying to figure out the best sales site to use. I've got 80s-90s punk, hardcore (nyhc, powerviolence, crust), ambient/experimental, harsh noise, a big collection of 70s-80s funk 45s, old school NY hip hop.. kinda all over the map but a lot of stuff on smaller labels that might not add up to instant ebay sales. Amazon takes (if I'm getting this right) 33% on a $10 music sale. Gemm has a flat 13% fee, and I'm thinking I will set up shop there. I hear Gemm can be slow for making sales but maybe the stuff I have will take time to sell anyway. Have any of you sold largish amounts of vinyl online?

Ok cool, thanks guys. I'll probably use Discogs then, I already have an account and the Gemm interface does feel a little lovely from the little bit I've used it setting up a seller account. I'm sure I'll post some stuff here too but it might take me a little while to sort through everything to see what I can part with. I basically saved every record I ever owned from when I was a kid and never dreamed of getting rid of anything but I really need to make some space and have somehow become less attached to vinyl as horrible as that sounds.

Stuntman posted:Apologies if this is the wrong topic, but I figured this was the best place. I recently rescued a box of records, and found an audition record. It's a shellac(?) 10 inch with an orange label. The label has 3 boxes for speed, with the 33 RPM one checked off. The sleeve it's in is a generic brown paper one apparently from the Presto Recording Corporation, but the label says Quality Recording Service at the top. Apparently it was manufactured in Stockton, CA. The band listed on it is University of Pacific Band Frolic, and the song listed for both sides is "Happiness is a..." and it says Covell Hall. Does anyone know anything about the band/company/how much it would be worth? Thanks in advance. I can post pictures if needed. Apparently it's a "annual university stage competition called Band Frolic" which ran at least from the 60s-80s. There's mentions of it in a fair amount of Google results, Archive.org has this one posted: http://www.archive.org/details/BandFrolic77-OmegaPhiAlpha_699 I wouldn't think it would be worth much of anything unless you could find someone with a particular interest in it, the way old yearbooks sell for a lot. Maybe you can find a forum for school alumni or something like that. That's my guess at least. e-argh, beaten, but at least we agree.

I haven't had good experience with storing records on wooden shelving, but if you make your own you can build them strong enough to bear the weight. I bought a few sets of these metal shelving units from a restaurant supply shop. They're the heavier duty kind compared to the ones that look like this that are sold at Home Depot etc. They're easy to put up/take down and last forever. I put 2-3 milkcrates per shelf so I can pull down sections easily. I've been very happy with this method.

I'll definitely put stuff up, I'm just selling the big stuff first. Going through a mid-life organization crisis. Anyone in NYC want a couple nice SL-1200M3D's for $600? If anyone goes for the shelving I mentioned, I'd suggest going as tall as you can, expecting that you can put a few crates on top too. The good part about restaurant supply shops is they have a wide variety of sizes and will cut the height how you want. I got mine 6' tall but now I wish I got 7'. Also, giving yourself an extra couple inches height per shelf is nice for browsing.

Or banker's boxes work well for 7"s too, they fit two rows sideways pretty well. The boxes are a little tall but they're strong and the hand holes are convenient for lifting.

Red posted:I have to wonder about the circumstances when I happen to see an enormous collection of brand new vinyl collections at Goodwill. Nobody would just dump off four boxes of new electronica/house/punk - I have to assume someone got evicted, it's stolen, or someone's girlfriend knew how to really hurt them. It's a real rush though, right? I love finding big collections, it's just a little painful when they're asking too much even though you know they have no idea what they've got. My favorite time like that was when I found an old Hasidic run thrift shop in Brooklyn that had somehow acquired what must have been the remnants of a record store from the 70s. There were thousands of 45s, multiples of a lot of em, funk, soul, early funky disco. I was pretty poor otherwise I would have bought them all, but I had to act fast because you could see other record collectors drifting in and seeing the same thing. I snatched up around 400 of them, and got some good stuff like Skull Snaps - It's a New Day, which contains one of the most famous beats in hip hop sampling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uP40rWs3g2M I used to have fairly frequent dreams about finding vinyl jackpots like that.

Yeah, I agree, the heyday of abundant cheap used vinyl seems to have passed. The thrift shops don't seem interested, and I guess fewer people have big unwanted collections laying around that they're willing to give away. After MCA died I played my old copy of Licensed to Ill (my parents got it for me as a Christmas present the year it came out) and my girlfriend, who has never liked any hip hop, takes to it immediately. Now she knows almost all the words to Paul's Boutique, my favorite of their records. Licensed to Ill is the only one I had on vinyl, so for her birthday I'm buying her Some ol Bullshit, Paul's Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, Hello Nasty, and the last one, Hot Sauce 2. I almost never buy new vinyl these days so its going to be cool for me too I was going to get To the 5 Boroughs, but can't find a copy for less than $50 or so and I had the impression that it wasn't so hot.

Here's one of my gems, a still sealed copy of the first album (or something like that) A Japanese friend who worked in a record store was shopping at a vinyl distributor and found two perfect copies that had apparently been misfiled since the early 80s. They were basically free for him but it made for one of the best vinyl gifts I've ever received.

Ron Burgundy posted:Has anyone ever done a move with thousands of records before. I've done this a few times and its not fun, especially if you're doing the lifting. The good part about doing the move yourself is that you can be careful with the boxes, although I've dropped a box on a corner and almost had a heart attack. My last move I was not loving around. I had movers, so I packed milkcrates into larger boxes with a ton of extra cardboard securely cushioning the crates. For 7"s basically the same, but full bankers boxes (not the best but they take two rows) inside a larger box. Nothing was damaged at all, which is a little funny because lately I'm the least precious with my vinyl in general that I've ever been. Good luck! Replacing records sucks, and something always goes wrong in a move. Don't let it be your records that take the fall, let your dishes smash first. The basement is a great place to just chill and stare at bad album art for hours but the only thing I remember buying there is a not-so-bad 12" by a very bitter wheelchair-bound gangsta dancehall rapper who I think was called Crooked.

I always sorted my records by genre, then maybe occasionally alphabetized by artist. I'm so used to that, I don't think I'd be able to find everything if it was all by artist. Then you need to be able to remember all those band names. Only problem is, I noticed at one point that my collection was basically segregated along racial lines.

My dad hooked me up for Father's Day: Not sure how he got these, but it's 7 copies of a repress of The Patriots from 82-83. 4 colors! For an old folkie he really got me started on punk in the mid 80s. Through the anti-nuke movement he met a few bands like Conflict and brought me tons of their records. You never knew what he would bring back from work trips. Late 80s he'd get me metal albums, and he was picking up jungle mix tapes from London before anything had shown up here in NY. Thanks dad!
