So I need a new turntable because I'm pretty sure the one I've got is total poo poo, also it doesn't have a dust cover and the kitty cat loves to scratch vinyl.

Is this one good enough? Or are there other sub-$100 turntables that are better?

So before I go replacing my turntable, is this thing as crappy and record destroying as I think it is?

On the contrary, that appears to be an Acoustic Research XA, their first model but a fairly well respected turntable.

It's a belt drive unit with a suspended sub-platter (desirable feature that helps eliminate outside vibrations reaching the stylus). It's a very solid performer.

Most people replace the cheap RCA cables with something nicer and of course you will want to replace the cartridge if you don't know the last time it was replaced. Be careful attaching the new cartridge that you don't strip the threads in the plastic headshell, the headshell is not cheap to replace.

Ah cool! I was kinda worried about the arm, like it's just got some weight on the end and there isn't really any way to fine tune how heavily it sits on the surface of the vinyl. So like, it sits pretty heavy... Is that fine?

Also can I just jam any old new needle in?

Hooray for record porn! I took a trip to Portland this past weekend, after having planned to move there in July, which didn't pan out. Managed to find a handful of things I've been looking for, which is always a good thing.

Thom Yorke - The Eraser
Warpaint - The Fool
Bear in Heaven - Beast Rest Forth Mouth (Blue vinyl)
Marnie Stern - S/T
Electric Wizard - Black Masses (This one gets the "out of the sleeve" treatment, because those discs are wicked looking, and hot drat I love that album. :350:)

Rad I love bear in heaven.

Love them. Pre-ordered the new album and got a limited to 200 copies white vinyl edition for my troubles :haw:

Wha cool. I have the normal one :( They're the only group I've seen twice in concert too.

Yeah I just jam it down over the hole and after a couple times pulling it on and off the thing is stretched enough to start fitting easily every time.

How can you tell if your stylus is poo poo and need to be replaced? Are there any tell-tale signs?

Just bought my first vinyl, Starfucker's Miracle Mile, primarily because it came with a free ticket to their show next month. Came with a free slipmat too, from a local record store called Origami Vinyl. Total cost: $22

Earlier in the day, I bought a ticket to that show on Ticketmaster. Total cost: $32.

So yeah, what do you guys think of this Jensen turntable as a starter? I figure I can hook up some $20 logitech speakers to it. It's just $46 new http://www.amazon.com/Jensen-3-Speed-Stereo-Turntable-Silver/dp/B000UVKE2I/ref=zg_bs_3003611_5 I read the OP and it didn't mention exactly which model you guys recommended in the sub-$100 range..

Yeah Origami is a cool little store, I sortof impulse-bought the latest GY!BE while I was there today because I've got a crush on the girl that works there...

Pretty rad packaging, I like the super wide poster thing or whatever.

Also while I'm posting, I want to replace the stylus on this turntable, since I'm fairly sure it's like 50 years old or something. Will any stylus fit? Or do I have to get some special one? Also how easy is it to replace? There's like wires and stuff sticking out.

Oh man forgot about rsd, are there any good shoegazey albums worth picking up? I saw a mazzy star but I don't recognize anything else.

I'm going to ride my bike past a few shops so figure I should stop in. If there aren't lines.
