That's because the party was stupid and never accepted his betrayal to begin with. You can find him in the mountains well after the initial fight with Kratos and Lloyd is still asking whether he's a bad guy or not.

And without further ado, it's time to head to the final dungeon! Watch the cutscene! / Baldurdash drat, this is huge. It really feels like it reaches the sky. And this thing was just sleeping in the ground near Aspio. I can't believe it... ...It looks that way. This isn't good. It looks like it came together pretty quickly. So there's not much time left. Hey, aren't we in trouble too? If it's absorbing life from everyone, that should affect us as well, but... The spirits... They've swathed us in their power. So we should be fine as long as the spirits' power is greater than that formula. I doubt it would affect Ba'ul, but we probably couldn't take it. You just don't want to climb up. Of course not! Who do you think I am?! Sorry old man, but it looks like we're walking. Yay... We don't know what's in store for us. Stay sharp. Skit: The Ancient Civilization / Baldurdash The ancient civilization of Geraios... What must the people have been like who lived in an age that produced buildings like this? Well, I'm no expert on their lives, but I have some ideas from the blastia we've excavated. Except for the Adephagos, from a scientific perspective their civilization was nearly perfect. Their blastia would have given them power equal to that of the Entelexeia. Oh, yeah. Otherwise, the Entelexeia would've wiped them out. People got too much power, and destroyed what they built in the process... It's not that uncommon. But there's one part of their legacy we're still paying for. ...Yep. They left behind the Adephagos for folks who came after them ta deal with. Maybe they didn't have a choice, but that doesn't make it right. You take responsibility. We...we'll have to own up to whatever choices we make from now on, too. That's right. If we're gonna make a world without blastia...we gotta make sure it works. Yeah, absolutely. Watch the cutscene! / Baldurdash Whoa... Man... How could all of this be kept underground for so long? The ancient Geraios civilization. This is more amazing than anything in a book. Something feels strange. I know this is a weapon, because he's going to use it against the Adephagos. This place is enormous. So many people must have lived here. And now one man is holed up in here to destroy every last person. Duke... I'd rather not meet him if we don't have to. That soldier was already a hero in the Great War. Who knows how much stronger he's gotten since. What are you talking about? We'll just kill the Adephagos before we fight Duke. Then Duke won't have a reason to sacrifice humanity. I hope so... Alright, because this dungeon is pretty huge and kinda confusing, we're doing this a bit differently than usual. Map: Tarqaron, Entrance Section In order to convey the sheer size and structure of this dungeon, I've mapped it out to the best of my ability. Feel free to figure out the best way to get everything. Also make sure this crazy background music is playing constantly while you're looking at the maps. Apart from the size and pretty cool aesthetics, this dungeon is quite honestly not very exciting. Some sections are pretty annoying as well. The correct path to go is the one marked D on the map. Of course, that means we'll take the others first, for loot, starting with A. Map: Tarqaron, Section A This area is pretty small and unimportant. While we're here, Karol learns Punishing Aid Smash, combining the powers of attacking and healing into one arte. Back down near the entrance, we can find two of those things: You might have noticed one in section A too; those are elevators, but we can't use them yet. If we try Yuri just goes (?) and nothing else happens. Something else you might notice: Several areas in here are inaccessible. Unfortunately, we'll have to come back later for them. Map: Tarqaron, Sections B & C Sections B and C are more unimportant loot-only areas, so let's just skip over them and go straight to D. Map: Tarqaron, Section D Pretty straight walk through here to E, which is also straightforward. Map: Tarqaron, Section E Map: Tarqaron, Section F Section F introduces some big crystals you have to shoot with the sorcerer's ring to progress. The small spiky ones however can not be passed. Skit: An Ancient Relic We're so high... I wonder how much farther we'll have to climb... Yes. I've never even flown this high with Ba'ul. To think that this is a weapon to beat the Adephagos... *Whine* The Geraios civilization was even greater than I thought... But we're the ones who have to beat the Adephagos! Yeah, we'll be in for trouble if we leave things up to Duke. Let's hurry. Map: Tarqaron, Section G There are several areas in here that look like section G. Occasionally you have to guess which stair continues and which leads to loot, but apart from that these are pretty uninteresting. Map: Tarqaron, Section H Section H has this weird huge destroyed roulette wheel thing. There's four metal balls scattered on it, and you have to shoot them all into the middle with your sorcerer's ring to progress. Yeah I dunno. Map: Tarqaron, Section I Section I is pretty short and simple and has a save point, which is nice. Skit: Getting Lost Did people really live in this place? I don't know where we're supposed to go next... It's like the place is made to confuse us. It was probably built according to a plan at first. But after all sorts of little improvements, it ended up being the tangled city that it is. Isn't is strange that such an advanced civilization would have such haphazard planning? ...Maybe they were so advanced that the plans couldn't keep up with the rate of progress? Perhaps they thought technology just a few years old was outdated, and changed their plans. There's no use making guesses about what happened to a lost civilization. Let's keep going. You're not interested in figuring out how that lost civilization kept from getting lost? We men will make a path! Oh please... So go ahead. Lead the way. Map: Tarqaron, Section J Skit: Ba'ul's On His Own It's been a long time since we first came here. I wonder if Ba'ul's taking good care of things in our absence. Or maybe he's tired of being in such a dark place, and went home! Come on, Raven. He's at least more dependable than you are. If you kids are gonna say stuff like that ta me, maybe I'll go back fer real! Go ahead. But isn't it tough on Ba'ul, being near a magic field? Yes, the Ba'ul of a few years ago might not have been able to withstand that. Even though he's young for an Entelexeia, Ba'ul has grown. I'm sure he's just fine right now. You really trust Ba'ul, don't you, Judith? I wish Judith trusted me like that... And here's the reason why there was a save point in I: Section J has a boss fight! Watch the cutscene! / Baldurdash Wait, how did you get here?! You just never quit. How many times do I have to tell you? I don't want anything to do with you! The world will go bye-bye if you don't hurry? Is that it? If you know that much, then don't get in our way! Oh no no no no no! That's what gives it so much meaning! ...What's this guy talking about? Look. You bastard...! If you want to save the world, then you have to go through me. Why?! Why are you doing something so meaningless? Oh, but it does mean something! This way, you'll fight with everything you've got. Zagi... I never thought you were this crazy. Hah hah hah! Show me your anger! Your rage! Give me everything you've got! Because if you don't...you won't get any higher! Listen to the full conversation! Hahahahaha! Die die die die die!!! Just drop it already! You got more than a couple a' screws loose. How long are you going to keep chasing us?! Hah hah. I will hunt you down until you're dead. You're dying first! We won't lose to some nutcase like you! Didn't anyone ever tell you not to be a pest? Hmhm, yeah, keep talking while you still can. And you shut up! You ever heard of 'all bark, no bite'? Seriously... Hm, yeah, come on! Gimme everything you've got! We finish this now! We'll do whatever it takes! We've come this far. We will win! A lot, perhaps even all, of Zagi's attacks here are things he already used before in the other battles. Still, this is a pretty fun fight, as fights with humanoid bosses generally are in Tales. Zagi can easily stunlock or throw you into the air if you let him, so guarding him is pretty important. Karol got really lucky here and pulled out an exploding Karolow X. Oh, and Zagi has a Mystic Arte here. It's honestly kind of underwhelming. Oh well. And stay dead this time! Stop bothering us! Zagi drops a Demon's Seal: His secret mission involves hitting him after he uses Blastia Bane and while not very complicated is kinda annoying to pull off. (Baldurdash) Someone was clearly asleep while writing those grade descriptions. Secret Mission reward is a Stun Talisman: Achievement/Trophy: Secret Mission 22 / Secret Mission 24 Hm? I can't move. What a weak body... No one understood him, so he put so much meaning on fighting. Poor thing... Still, his skills made him pretty famous. Maybe he thought that he could let loose with everything when he fought Yuri. So Yuri was the only person he could do that with? What do I care about somebody that crazy? The downfall of someone with too much power. ... ...Judy? Okay. Okay, got it. Did something happen to Ba'ul? How far along is the life absorbing formula? Ba'ul doesn't know anything about formulas. Yeah, I guess you're right... I told Ba'ul to move around as he saw fit. We should move along too, right? Yeah. Let's hurry. Skit: Zagi's End / Baldurdash Zagi was hopeless... Yeah. Just think of all the things he could've done with all that energy. He finally found his equal, but the guy turned out ta be his enemy. That's the saddest part of all this for him. Huh? Duke lost his friend and equal. Alexei never believed his equal even existed. Then there's Zagi... The strong need strong friends ta keep their power from distorting them. ...You think that's it? Take the Don. He had his equal in Belius, right? ...Raven, sometimes what you say goes right over my head. What? Are you making fun of my elegant, poetic comments? Hah hah. You guys'll be fine, though. You got plenty of friends. Skit: Zagi - Part 2 Zagi was about as annoying as they come, but I feel sort of sorry for him. Oh? That's surprising. I thought he was a "Humph. Idiot!" kind of person. That is NOT what I sound like! I stand corrected. ...When you can do something better than anyone else, you wind up feeling like something's missing. The other researchers would go on and on about something I'd discovered, like, two months before... And I'd start to feel like talking with them was pointless. So you think...Zagi was the same way? I just got the feeling that we might have had something in common, that's all. ...But why am I telling you this? Just forget it. I'm sorry, but I have a good memory. Well then, keep it a secret, all right? Heh heh, it's a deal. Map: Tarqaron, Section K Section K is just more stair climbing. This is really getting boring. Map: Tarqaron, Section L (unmarked version) And, oh boy, section L. If you can't make out my markings there, all the blue (letters) are switches you have to hit with the ring to... ...move the platforms with the corresponding green [letter] into position. It's pretty tedious and involves a bunch of back-and-forth. Ugh. Eventually you reach those two elevators. At this point you're done with the mandatory section of the final dungeon. One of these switches opens up the path to the final boss, the other a path to a huge optional area. We'll save that optional section for later. Watch the cutscene! / Baldurdash Seems like the top is just up there. Duke must be there too. This is the moment of truth. Is everybody ready? I've been ready. Let's do it. Yeah. We have to do this. Right. Even this old man's gonna put up a fight. People believe in us. They're waiting for us. We must defeat the Adephagos! For them! And for Phaeroh and Belius... For the memories of the Entelexeia... Woof! Next time: The final boss! Loot: High Ability Plus: Follow an altered arte with a second altered arte once per combo. Anti Magic: Resist all magic effects. Recover, attack and enhance magic are all nullified. Liner Shot: Basic attack will change to small energy shots. Capable of ranged attacks. Resurrect: Occasionally revive from KO automatically. OVL Bonus 2: Occasionally fully restores TP during Over Limit. Lucky End: Occasionally allow character movement right after casting a spell. Landing: Reduces the amount of time character is unable to move after landing. Evade 3: Increases agility by 15%. Increase due to equipment not affected. Mobile Armor: Avoid staggering when hit during Free Run. Admiral H. Curtiss fucked around with this message at 12:36 on Nov 1, 2016 |

The majority of Tales of Vesperia endgame sidequests can be completed either before or after the final dungeon, really. There are a few silly things that you have to at least flag before beating the game, but that's about it. The PS3 version went even further and fixed some of the sillier of things with cutoff points. Anyway, I'm forgetting, do you have all the fell arms yet? I'm guessing you at least triggered the start of the quest, since it's one of those silly things with a cutoff, but can't recall if you found all of them.

The final Zagi fight here caused me to completely rethink my opinion of the guy. Until this fight, I just thought he was like a hyper violent team rocket. Once I got here, I shouted 'God drat it, Zagi!' because I simply could not fathom how this idiot got there, especially not since the last time he showed up, he got blasted out of the Heracles and into the Ocean. How did he make it back to land AND upgrade his Blastia Arm, anyways? I don't know if the game ever tells you about that, but it'd be nice. But yeah, Zagi annoys me a lot more now because of this battle, though I will admit as far as 'Quick! We need a bossfight halfway through the final dungeon!' kinds of bosses go, Zagi isn't too bad... I just rage because I can't figure out how the hell he actually got to the final dungeon BEFORE the party did.

Let's finish this! I recommend just watching the whole final boss and ending sequence in this 25 minute video: Watch the final boss & ending! / Baldurdash There's no need to use people to destroy the Adephagos! They're crucial. We'll make up the rest by turning the blastia cores to spirits too. Every single core in the world! And as a bonus, it'll put an end to the blastia culture that you hate so much. Not too shabby, huh? Can you not believe that people can move forward and change? Humans will not let something go once it is in their grasp. So you won't listen... We will destroy the Adephagos our own way. Please, wait just a little longer. Huh? Will the aer be controlled by the Entelexeia? Will all life return to a time when nature ruled? No... For the convenience of humans. Nothing more. Can't you think that the world might be growing? ...I would not presume to speak on the choices of the Entelexeia. So you won't listen to us because we're humans? You say you can't trust people so you just drop everything. Then when it's too late, you try to wipe them out?! ...Do you know what this tower is? To destroy the Entelexeia! ! To the ancients who did not recognize the threat of the blastia the Entelexeia, who attacked the blastia, were nothing more than a nuisance. And the aer went out of balance, and the Adephagos appeared... Only then did humans listen to the words of the Entelexeia. Our world has seen many sacrifices. Yet humans committed the same offence. And they will again. Those who eat away and ruin this world... Those who would change the world for their own continued existence... They are apostles of destruction greater than even the Adephagos. Elucifur... ...So Khroma told you? She listened to us, too, and became a spirit. So please, we can do this together... ...Enough. I need not wait for your method. Once I complete this formula, the world will be saved. As long as humans rule, they will commit the same offence time and again. Even if we are hurt or stopped, we can still walk again as long as we don't give up! She's right. And unlike you, we haven't chosen this path on our own. Everyone decided on it. Yeah! Going it alone might be tough... I finally learned that we can walk together like that! That may be sufficient for those who are connected to one another. You all surely understand that. It will be difficult, but that is reality. But they will take what changes, think, and change again. Both the people and the world. I know this now. That's what it means to live. But this old man wants to see what lies ahead for people in the next era. See how the fools change. For those who can't see them anymore. ...However our feelings for the world are no different. How odd. The future we chose...what we see for the future...is different. The future must be protected. If it is not, then destruction awaits. We make the future. You trust the path you choose and create it. Come! Listen to the full conversation! We're gonna kill the Adephagos, so stay out of the way! This isn't a path we chose alone! The Entelexeia, the Kritya... They've chosen the same path. Grrr... Woof! Woof! I have no reason to go along with your plan. Could you be any more stubborn? Why won't you listen?! We're trying to create a new future, so we don't have to repeat a terrible past. We made this choice so humans and Entelexeia could move on together! The Entelexeia will regret that decision, and humans will wish they had died. I don't think anybody's gonna think that. Trust me. I won't regret it, no matter what you say. Our resolve runs deeper than that. We will keep on working to bring this hope to our future. Even if it means fighting for our lives. Such a foolish conclusion. There is no longer any point in talking. That's too bad. I guess we have to fight. I thought we could get you to understand. I guess we can't change you. It's not too late. C'mon, join us! If you would just listen! No more! So here's Duke, the final boss of Tales of Vesperia. He's honestly not too hard. He's got a couple fancy artes and can -- of course, he's a main villain in a JRPG -- teleport around the battlefield. And yes, there's multiple forms. Two in fact. The biggest pain when dealing with Duke is status effects. He can inflict quite a few status effects on your party, both actual effects and stat debuffs. His second form does this way more than the first. Two of the most painful effects are Sealed Artes and Sealed Skills; I'm sure you can tell what they do. The latter might even be exclusive to Duke, I'm not sure but I can't think of any other enemy that inflicts it. Like all enemies, he goes down eventually. You're pretty strong yourself. Humph. How unfortunate. I wish I could walk together with you all a while longer. Perhaps we would have had a different encounter... You stubborn bastard! The best path for an enduring world is to return it to its natural state. Listen to the full conversation! Spirits? You fools. How could the Entelexeia agree to such an uncertain plan? It's not uncertain! We did it! The Entelexeia became spirits! Using the spirits to defeat the Adephagos is not a fantasy! The world is trying to take on its natural form. You're just clinging to the past! Your memories of him bind you. I feel sorry for you. All the people of the world decided on this together. So get out of the way! So I am the only stubborn one? No. I am not mistaken. I will use all my power to eliminate your misguided purpose. So his second form is... yeah I have no idea what's up with that design. I mean final bosses in JRPGs looking ridiculous is nothing new but still. Apart from that, this second fight isn't really very different from the previous. He gets a couple new artes and dishes out more status effects more frequently, but apart from that, more or less the same. Weak here (that pill icon and the circles over your head) is also kinda nasty as it halves your Max HP -- but your current HP stays proportional to your maximum! One of his new artes is a Mystic Arte. It's pretty drat powerful. But thankfully, it can't actually kill you. Alright, let's finish this. Savage Wolf Fury (and as far as I know only this Mystic Arte, nothing else) gets an extension here, and only if it deals the killing blow. That's because that's this battle's secret mission: Dealing the killing blow with a Mystic Arte. Any works, but due to the extension it's of course much cooler with Savage Wolf Fury. You get a very, very nice reward for the last Secret Mission. Super Chain 3: Able to link altered to base artes. Glory: Avoid staggering for any kind of attacks. As you might be able to tell, Glory is broken as gently caress. Achievement/Trophy: Secret Mission 23 / Secret Mission 25 Anyway, enjoy the ending! But if Elucifur fought for humans during the Great War, then I don't think he'd want his friend to reject humanity. Elucifur's wish... I'm on it. Okay! Understood. The game cuts away to Flynn here, who seems to be in Capua Torim. Watch the credits! / Baldurdash The credits feature a ton of neat drawings of characters from the game. Here's a full set of them. Estelle has written down the story of the game, aptly titled Tales of Vesperia. This is clearly the best image in the credits. Thanks for the great English voice acting! And for the English translation, too! Achievement/Trophy: Defeated the Adephagos And that's it for the main story! Next time we'll take a look at some additional stuff regarding the final scenes and ending here, and after that it's all sidequests all the time! Admiral H. Duke as the final boss always felt kind of weak to me. The justification is typical JRPG "humans are dumbshits" and Duke has been a jackass but he has never really been evil. Even though his method is unforgivable, he's just not very villainous, he's just an rear end in a top hat who disagrees with you, and that's a weird guy to have as the final boss. As dumb as it probably would have been, an actual fight with some form of the Adephagos might have been better. And of course defeating him means he totally gets you now and will help out. Lots of problems in Vesperia are solved by knocking the guy who's disagreeing with you over the head. Oh well. Jamieson Price is an amazing voice actor, in any case. Also, you can definitely tell that two party members are missing in that one shot where they're all gathering to form the giant blastia energy lightsaber thing. ...The first time I beat this game, it was actually by complete accident -- I was pretty underleveled, so Duke's second form and all his status inflictions really took a toll on me. He eventually wore me out of life bottles and knocked out everyone except Estelle, who had like 300 HP left. I threw up my hands and resigned myself to my defeat, and got infuriated when I checked his health and saw that he had 42 HP left. He slowly hovers over to Estelle, attacks her, she guards the attack... ...and her "reflect a portion of guarded damage back unto the enemy" skill activates and Duke takes like 50 damage and dies. I don't think I even understood the ending, I was just dying from disbelieving laughter. That is about as far as you can get from completing this secret mission.

He spent the entire game just kinda staring at all the stuff happening, and I don't remember him doing much to earn his place as the final boss. Could someone explain why he did any of these things? He felt he should just sacrifice the lives of all humans (including himself) to destroy the giant monster that was going to eat the world. He was going to do this because he thought Humanity had done too many wrongs by waking said monster up again (So once again this is all Alexei's fault.) and that we should just put the world back in its original state minus humans.

Elucifer was his best big monster friend during the war between humans and big monsters in the past. The humans were dicks and killed him, probably because his name was Elucifer and he presumably looked something like that second form Duke channeled, so now he hates humanity. None of this was clear until, like, right before the end when the party went to gather the last spirit, so it's easy to forget. I can't recall what exactly was at stake here, though. He might've been willing to use all of humanity to power that big, human-made, super-weapon city and wipe out the adephagos? So he could be alone in the world with nature and whatever big monsters were left? Can't remember if the exact scale of it was ever explained, but either way the game tried to paint him as a tragic hero rather than an actual villain. I like to simplify it down to "Duke is PETA".

I'd assume the credits bit with Patty in them are from the PS3 version of the game.Wild Knight posted:And of course defeating him means he totally gets you now and will help out. Lots of problems in Vesperia are solved by knocking the guy who's disagreeing with you over the head. I wouldn't say that's him getting them now. More that he's just willing to help out to see where things go. He's still questioning it during the whole thing after all. Both are pretty cliche anyway.

You get a sword for defeating the final boss. Is that only useful on new game plus, or can you still do a few side quests after beating the boss? (And also I'm still waiting for an explanation for how a 6-year old girl was captain of a pirate ship.) Stabbey_the_Clown fucked around with this message at 13:46 on Jun 6, 2013 |

Loading that save you make after the credits puts you right back before the final battle, but with the stuff you got from that battle as well as a "game cleared!" flag (that star on the save file) which unlocks a few sidequests. Apart from that everything is as it was before the final battle; you don't get to run around in the world without the Adephagos or anything. Wild Knight posted:...The first time I beat this game, it was actually by complete accident -- I was pretty underleveled, so Duke's second form and all his status inflictions really took a toll on me. That's both hilarious and awesome at the same time! One of the best ways to kill a final boss, is when you are certain you are about to die. Duke had essentially the same goal in mind as the party: to save the world from the adephagos. It's just that the motives were different, and both of them thought the other's was completely stupid. And really, there was no certain Duke's plan would be successful either, but he forgot that a world without mankind can't possibly thrive. It was touched on in G Gundam.

I think one of the cutscenes in the final boss fight changes depending on who you have leading your party. I'm also looking forward to seeing the bonus bosses, because man there are quite a lot in this game.
